Haha I remember playing that. I was more interested in playing with the pieces though as I was pretty young.

I like Chess, draughts (reminds me I need to get my nice oak dual set back from parents), Scrabble and I played a lot of Monopoly during university for some reason - shallow game yes, but spice it up with trading and it becomes better. My girlfriend only likes trivial pursuit and with it being an older set and her being older than me she always seems to win.

I just bought the vanilla Dominion last night, and played a few games with my wife today. We're both really enjoying it so far, although we have a lot to learn (still using the 'beginner' setup). How does a 3 or 4 person game compare? Hopefully in the next week or two we'll be able to have another couple over to find out for ourselves.

I've never really played any board games other than the classics (Monopoly, Scrabble, etc.), so I was a little overwhelmed checking out the game store yesterday. One of the guys there started a game of Carcassonne with me just to show me what it's like, and I think I'll be going back to pick up a box (only $20 for the original). Or maybe just play it on Xbox live or my iPhone.

I'll take some time to get into these a little more, but will surely be interested in picking up a few more before long. Maybe I should check out some of the other Rio Grande published games? I'm in the US, btw.

Dominion a great game. The base set is good, and I've enjoyed all of the expansions that I got (Intrigue, Seaside, and Prosperity... skipped Alchemy due to the lukewarm reviews).

I'm not too sure about 3 or 4 player games, since in real life I've always just played against my girlfriend. I have played a couple 3-player games on BrettSpielWelt, which was a little different, but not tremendously so in my experience. The main thing to watch out for is running out of three kingdom cards... in 2-player games you usually run out of Provinces first (in the base set anyway, Prosperity is a different story).

PROTIP: Games with Chapel are awesome... you can trash a bunch of Coppers and Estates in the first couple turns to make a really streamlined deck. I don't know why that didn't occur to me at first, but once I read about that it was like "oh, duh!"

Carcassonne is pretty good too, although I've never played it with a real board, just on XBLA and NDS. The nice thing about the XBLA version is that it has local multiplayer. Catan and Magic the Gathering don't since there's no way to hide your hand from your opponents. Ticket to Ride has local multiplayer, but since you can see your local opponents' tickets, it's not the same as in real life. I'd still recommend any of those, though.

Also, as mentioned earlier, Race for the Galaxy is another good card game from Rio Grande. It's kind of confusing at first, but it's worth it once you get the hang of it.

My wife and I have been having a great deal of fun playing the Cities and Knights expansion for Catan with our friends. It opens up so much more opportunities for victory points. It really helps balance the game out to the point where you could be locked down by other players (confined to a small area of the board) and still be making points. Way fun! :D

I have several board games I'm looking to unload. I have a few that are MIB, sealed, brand new: Star Wars Death Star Run, E.T., Battlestar Galactica. I also have a couple of video game related ones that I played a lot: Zaxxon and Pac Man. Is anyone interested in these? PM me and name a price.

This.
Really bloody fun. We usually skip the cards that take more than 5 seconds to read and understand [so, just about all of Alchemy is excluded] so we can bring in random people to play, and they usually get the rules and how to play around their third turn or so.
It's nice to get a 6 player game going, but it takes forever [in terms of playtime]. 4 player games are more exciting.

Also, I've never played with less than 4 people.
Come check out my website, I guess. Random stuff I've worked on over the last two decades.

Yea, my sister bought a Dominion base set for her husband a few months ago, I went over to play once or twice and it's my new favourite game. They gave me a Dominion Intrigue set for my birthday. I think I kind of like the vanilla version better, but if I could just take maybe 2 cards from the vanilla version, this would be perfect.

I have to stop playing with my sister though, she always threatens to ragequit when we use attacks, so every game just becomes a race to grind money to buy properties faster...

Regardless, I think it's always best to have the base version of any game around, just to get new people into the game.

My problem with Alchemy is the potions. They add more luck to the game because they need to appear (or not appear) in combination with other cards. If Familiar is the only good potion card on the board (which costs $3 plus a potion), getting a hand with $2 plus a potion usually results in a wasted turn. Likewise, getting $6 plus a potion in the late game is pretty bad when you're going for Provinces. It's probably not as bad if you're just playing with Alchemy cards, but I've never done that.

Anyway, for new players, it's probably worth mentioning that Donald X. considers Chapel, Thief, Witch, and Gardens to be the pillars of the base set, meaning that their presence changes the way the game is played.

Chapel teaches the value of trashing coppers and estates.
Witch teaches how strong curse attacks are.
Gardens rewards you for adding a lot of filler to your deck (usually a very bad thing), and downplays the importance of Golds and Provinces, which are usually key. However, Gardens generally needs support from something like Workshop to be a viable strategy, whereas Chapel and Witch are usually good no matter what other cards are available.
Thief... I'm not sure why this is a pillar. It's usually a pretty bad card in 2-player, although it gets better with more players. I guess it teaches you how to build a deck to mitigate opponents' attacks (in this case, relying more on actions to get money instead of treasures)?
gct wrote:I have to stop playing with my sister though, she always threatens to ragequit when we use attacks, so every game just becomes a race to grind money to buy properties faster...
One unfortunate thing about the base game is that ignoring action cards is sometimes viable strategy. This turns some people off because it makes the game seem too simplistic... why build cool card interactions when you can just win by buying treasure, victory cards, and maybe a Smithy or two?

Some attack cards really do make the game less fun, though. Personally, I hate Saboteur and Possession. Saboteur is annoying, demoralizing, and really just makes the game drag. Luckily, it's usually not that great of a card, so experienced players don't buy it very often. Possession is really expensive and sometimes doesn't pay off, like when you take over your opponent's turn and they just have two coppers and three victory cards. But when an opponent plays King's Court -> Possession, I think punching them in the mouth should be fair game.

This is probably the best indicator of which cards people hate overall: http://forum.dominionstrategy.com/index.php?topic=594.0

I recall that Milton Bradley also sold board games based off of Donkey Kong and Frogger as well during the early 1980s arcade craze/fad that was going on at the time.

How's the condition of the MB produced Pac-Man game, Greg? In mint condition or less than that? I still do have an MB produced Zaxxon board game...interesting three-dimensional game using black colored plastic Zaxxon game pieces btw.

I recall the cool but expensive MB produced board game called "Dark Tower" after watching the cool TV commercial for it back in the early 1980s. I remember my local Kay-Bee toy store had a DT demo setup outside their store and you could try it out. I pressed the action button to see what new scenes/actions would light up on the interactive Dark Tower unit itself (which required batteries, of course). Never bought it considering that it was quite expensive back in the day. I'm sure it was more affordable when it went on clearance though.

I also recall of another early 1980s MB electronic board game that used an arcade game cabinet setup to play a bunch of different games using different cards that you'd slide into the front of the game monitor screen (it used actual red colored LEDs for the mini games). I forget what it was called but the premise was to play the many different mini games on the mini arcade cab and move your game pieces on the game board itself. Hmmm...

There is another possible thread to start regarding those cool tabletop VFD (vacuum florescent display) & portable LED & LCD handheld based electronic games that were cool to play/own from Mattel, Coleco, Tandy, Nintendo, Bandai, Tomy, Gakken, Entex, Casio, Sharp, GCE (General Consumer Electronics -- same folks whom made the Vectrex made wristwatch LCD games called Game Time, Sports Time & Arcade Time), etc. Those were cool back in the early 1980s...during the same era of the famous Game & Watch series made their debut worldwide.

I was a hardcore boardgamer back in the days.
some games I remember playing:

_setlers of cattans (sick replayabilty and super fun short games;by far my most played)
_axies&allies (I have a free pc version called triple A and u can play online with it if anyone is interested).
_diplomacy (most epic game ever,so few units and still so complex;lose friends on this game for sure)
_dune (lot af flaws but great ambiance)
_zardoz (like dune)
_space hulk (man this one was beautifull)
_mediterranée (nice board but didn't play too much)
_full metal planet (great and metal pieces)
_talisman
_Lord of the Rings (The) - The Confrontation (I loved this one, stratego likes but one plays mordor and one fellowship, all differents characters and powers, short game and fun to play)

I've played so many games but for now those stands out in what I would recommend trying.

A while back I got a dexterity game called Polarity. It's played with magnetic discs, where you use the magnetic fields to "balance" pieces and lift them off the ground. There's lots of chaos when players screw up.

Although the best abstract strategy game for shmup fans has to be Go. The whole game is about bullet grazing to making the biggest bubble of safety, but not so big the other guy can plant a sniper tank inside.

Just don't get too good! 8) Ever since I started playing on Isotropic, my girlfriend and I don't play that much since we're no longer evenly matched.

go has the quality to be enjoyable at low level I think.
Even better is you learning it with your gf.
And if you are better than your opponent there is still handicaps stones to make the game good.

This thread deserves a bump for Cards Against Humanity. If you know of Apples to Apples, it's like that, except better in pretty much every way (playing with the Rando Cardrissian house rule is hilarious and very much recommended). One of the best casual party games I've played.

Arkham Horror is also pretty damn awesome for a more serious group (can even be played solo, but co-op with a group is the way to go). Team up to save the town while beating the crap out of Lovecraftian horrors and trying not to go insane. Rules are pretty good about avoiding condradictions, and turns are actually quite quick once you get into the pace and turn phases of the game, however the first two or so times you play it'll go rather slow until you get the hang of who can do what during each turn phase. Game allows for selectable characters with unique stats and abilities (play with generally weaker ones for a challenge or use a combination that's crazy strong or simply pick at random). Goal is to save the town from a certain Lovecraft horror, with some being outright easier than others (Azatoth's not so bad with characters geared for closing gates but autokills everyone and ends the game if you're forced into the boss fight or choose to fight Cthulhu who is arguably one of the nastiest of the horrors all around no matter what team you use).

Can't emphasize enough how much I love Arkham Horror. The Wrath of Ashardalon and Ravenloft board games are also a lot of fun, but fewer players allowed, so they're only for a smaller sized group (max 5 or so compared to AH's 1 to 8 players).

Completely Agree. My set just arrived yesterday and I've got a 6-8 person game arranged for tonight. Played a friends copy last weekend and 6 hours just faded away. Grabbed the expansion and I have the Canadian Conversion Kit which includes such gems as "An icy handjob from an Edmonton hooker".

Should get the shumpping gang together for a game sometime.

I made my own deck for Cards Against Humanity. This seems to be the type of game that works much better with a personalized set. Since this game is something I pretty much only play with the local convention group, I tossed out the (not so) current events and people, and added in local convention humor; enough to double the size of the deck.

That's scary given the size of the stock deck. Fortunately my group has a varied enough sense of humour. Though there are some cards that seem to pretty feel be insta-wins. Like, "Firing a rifle into the air while balls deep in a squealing hog".

Still pissed my hand of:

Dental Dams + Pulling Out = Chivalry

Was beaten by:

Anal Beads + Doing It In The Butt = Child Abuse

Holy crap, I loved that game. The voice always freaked me out, especially when it changes pitch as time is running out.

A friend got us into Mahjong a while back (the 4-player one, not the solitaire one). Started with the luck based European Classical rules, moving up to the more modern Japanese rules. Two and three player variations are fun too.

ROBO RALLY!!

Image

Image

Image

Every player is allocated movement cards at the beginning of each turn which you use to program your robot. Problem is your robot is gonna move according to its program even if it's been moved by another robot or a movement belt in ways you hadn't anticipated, so sometimes your whole sequence gets fucked. It's a lot of fun, a perfect mixture between strategy and chaos (and you can get extra ACME-style equipment too, shit like double laser cannons or magnets). There are two expansions which I haven't tried yet but which are hilariously named, "Armed and Dangerours" and "Crash and Burn".

I have Roborally, and when I tried it my friends didn't like the hair-pulling movement system and the excessive mutual disruption and destruction.
Personally, I feel up to the task, but games are highly random and a bit long; I suggest experimenting with house rules about items (to give out more, or balance the really good ones).

On the other hand, Roborally seems very suitable for mashups with other board games with movement of units on a square grid of about 1 inch, for example:
  • Bloodbowl/Dungeonbowl (a few robots per team, pooling movement cards together for obvious mercy reasons);
  • Space Hulk (space marines on conveyor belts...) and similarly Heroquest and some D&D branded games;
  • Zombies!!! series (with a suitably silly excuse, e.g. alien robots landing in the middle of a random town, with a big machinery-infested starship that turns citizens into zombies with engine radiation).

I usually play a lot of board games with my friends, in this period we're currently playing:
- Eclipse: excellent game, cutting the long story short you have to create your empire in the galaxy colonizing lots of planets, or with scientific researches, or simply bursting other players to death. It's very long to play though, games with 3-4 players can last up to four hours.

- 7 wonders: draft-type game, is very easy to play (if you know how to predict and a bit of counter-drafting) and very fun. Mostly skill-based, luck has a really little importance here.

- Blood Bowl: Team Manager (card game): my bane. We've played this game for 2 months or so and i haven't won a game so far. It's basically Bloodbowl with cards, no big difference. It's a bit too much luck-based to me, but it's an enjoyable game nonetheless.

- Lord of the Waterdeep: workers placement game based on D&D, it's not a great game but everybody likes it because it's rather fast and every game is different.

Playing this game, to me, is like watching the average Stephen Chow film: there's lots of creative zaniness and everybody has fun, but yeah it can be very chaotic at times, which you have to like. I can see how somebody might not wanna play RR again since it's not that skill-based (although it does play a certain role).

Your mash-up ideas sound fun, definitely try out some of them and report back.

I'm glad to see this thread here as over the past year or two strategy/'hardcore'/'Germanstyle' board games have become an obsession.

Happily, though, it's been an obsession my social circle have been happy to embrace. Over the years we'd occasionally play the 'classics' that sell well in the UK (Monopoly, Scrabble, blah blah blah), but they got tiresome years ago really. Then I started buying strategy board games gradually.

I was inspired by all the video game developers I visit as part of my job. Games studios typically have a shelve or two covered in board games, and use them as inspiration in terms of game mechanics and game balancing. Many developers also have board game night, and getting invited placated my ego!

But I doubted my firends would be too keen. but to my delight all my social circle, from video gamers to those who would never touch a video game, and guys, girls and all kinds of characters actually love the,. They actively encourage me to introduce them to these games. That's all I've needed as an excuse to buy tonnes, and loads of expansions. At the moment I've been buying what real board gaming aficionados would call the obvious choices, but I love them.

These are the ones most played by my lot (mainly with expansions):

Dominion
Carcassone
Ticket to Ride
Settlers of Catan
Rivals of Catan (a two player version of Catan, with a bit more detail, in that rather than building towns and cities, you build blacksmiths, shipmerchants, etc)
Memoir '44

And when we don't want to think, Crossbows and Catapults!

Next, I want to check out Pueto Rico, and I'm keen to hear recommendations!

EDIT: And my wife beats me at everything!

I really like Hero Quest, but not really as a player - what I really like doing is building my own dungeons and then having people play them. I have a playing group that finished a campaign I built, and I'm going to build another one, with some expanded rules - skills for the characters, and so.

Another game I've grown very fond of is Ghost Stories, where you play 1-4 players (monks) in a team against a deck of various ghosts/monsters that try to haunt a village. The village is made out of nine tiles that you can place in random order, the deck will of course be shuffled and so is random, and there's ten different bosses, of which you use one or more depending on difficulty. Monks come in four different colours and each colour has two special powers, only one of which is used in one game. Monsters are battled by rolling dice with coloured dots on them and using coloured markers. And stuff. It's great fun, especially if you're a full four players.

Agricola is also one I've been intorduced to and liked. Build a farm! At some point during the endgame I tend to rather than do the most valuable actions pointwise try to use every tile on the farm. It sometimes actually helps.
My 1CCs so I can find the list easier myself
