I'm under the impression that there are far more people that believe in a god and/or religion than those of us who know it's all bullshit. Hence, to even be a candidate for president in the US, you need to have some sort of belief that's somewhat inline with the masses possibly voting for you.

It's fucked, but that's the way it is. I wish we were intelligent enough to separate the two. I have morals because I'm a human being, not because a book told me to.
I don't know if y'all remember, but back in the 1988 election Bush Sr. said in an interview something to the effect of "I don't know if Atheists should be considered patriots, nor should they be considered citizens." There was hardly a wave, if that tells you anything about the religious fervor of our nation... yuck.

Don't get me wrong - overall, I love America. But those puritan immigrants really did a number on us.

As for the topic... McCain is an idiot. Same with Palin.

I love how they're trying to pass it off as her having Russian experience because "Alaska is close to Russia." And now I hear she wants to go to war with Russia. Fucking RUSSIA? After all the trouble we've had conquering a couple weak middle east dictatorships, she wants to tackle one of the largest and most powerful nations in the world?

In a sensible world, that would have lost her the election right there.

If experience was truly an issue, Obama would have never gotten close to being nominated.

Experience and common sense aren't mutually exclusive. Too bad this seems to be the exception, rather than the rule.

Actually I don't think the modern day religious right have anything to do with the puritans. Fundamentalism as a Christian movement in the US has been around for less than a hundred years. I tend not to give these folks the credit of any sort of legitimate history. They're pretty much self-invented wackos as far as I can tell.

Is america a nation of retards ? we got fucked all the way in with republicans for the last 8 years and you would think the next election would not even be close; that Obama would easily beat any republicans. Look at the polls ! The maverick and the MILF are ahead now. If Democrats can't manage to win this election and don't see how they will ever be able to win any other one. I guess Bush's propaganda and corporate owned medias are doing the trick.

That's easy. All you need to do is get a candidate that is old, preferably white, drinks beer, and makes up words at random intervals (Being Evangelical doesn't hurt either). Having such a candidate will make the public feel like they can relate to him, or even be the president themselves one day. Thus they will vote for said candidate without looking at their policies, what they stand for, or whether they're going to declare a nuclear war. Sure, it may cause the country to lose credibility and have the rest of the world look down on us (like they don't already), but hey, that's politics~!

Don't despair, people will realize McCain got desperate and was like AWWW YEAH I CAN GET A NEW GIRL

also Joe Biden hardly ever gets any coverage despite being better at pretty much everything - of course, he never used his office against an ex-in-law.

I still have to believe either the data is skewed or something. Fuck the electoral college. Only in the US do the votes from the regions which contain the highest percentage of educated people count for LESS than votes from the regions which are mostly rednecks.

Having just moved to California, the thought of succeeding from the union is very real (and seemingly shared by a lot of others.) I'm really sick of JesusLand running (ruining) the rest of the country.

On that note, I believe Obama's poll "bounce" after his speeches was about 2 percentage points (lulz, that's not even statistically significant) higher than Max Cayne's.

What's eating me is that Palin gets tons of press despite being lousy in the public spotlight, and Joe Biden...well, you could put his head on this guy and it'd be about accurate (which is more than can be said for the representativeness of the original picture).

You know, if the whole Republican party up and died and Ron Paul became the candidate, I'd be interested again, if only to see some decent debate about fundamental Constitutional issues and taxes etc. Obama can get away with being lazy / political because Johnny doesn't seem to have a platform.

Good point! But the monarchy have so little effect on real life in this country they aren't even worth worrying about. Other than being an object of fascination with two particular right-wing papers stuck in the past and still obsessed with Di, the royals are more like a group of dated celebrities, or perhaps comparing them with a sit-com is more accurate. We're just about still interested enough to point and laugh at their idiocy when Philip makes a dick of himself or Prince Harry dresses as a Nazi.

But yeah - in the UK there's certainly a very strong negativity towards evangelicals and the religious right.

The Church of England is more 'tea and scones with the vicar' than fire and brimstone. Though we do have a small few crazies handing out chick tracts.

I don't think she even knew the concept of a foreign policy doctrine in general. She didn't seem to pick up on the fact that the question had anything to do with foreign policy until Charlie Gibson mentioned the Iraq war.

Zah? The temperence movement has been around since the early 1800's. The colonies and states had laws prohibiting blasphemy. Religion has always been a force in American politics.

Define "beginning".

Everyone (except hardcore conservatives) loved McCain at the start of this decade. He was the Republican that had a liberal view on social issues (pro-choice, pro-gay marriage as well I think) and yet he still managed to be a conservative on issues like economy and foreign affairs.

And really, even liberals loved him back in the day. I can remember him being Jon Stewart's favorite senator or something, and even my super lefty government/economics teacher in high school had a huge John McCain 2000 poster in his class and the man swore by him.

Problem is, after losing the primaries to Bush in 2000, McCain pretty much sold out. The man who once didn't really vote along party lines and actually stood for something, pretty much jumped on the NeoCon bandwagon and has been riding it ever since.

And thats the problem. McCain once was an honorable guy that didn't let the party control his ideas. Now he's pretty much completely sold out and is playing the GOP's game, which is a shame. Honestly, I think it would have been a lot better if McCain had been honest with himself and just had Liberman be his VP, it would've made more sense and it would have shown the "reaching across the aisle" attitude he used to be known for.

But no... he decided to play politics and pick Palin. Now he'll certainly snag votes from the hardcore super conservatives that otherwise don't like him (despite the selling out), but I imagine its going to bite him in the ass in the end when it comes to the independents.

I hate to promote the smear story, but Ross Perot has hated McCain's guts long before 2000. McCain left his first wife after he returned from Vietnam, married money, and the argument is made that he's always been out for #1. I don't know if that's a fair judgement or not.
