19XX here. 'Kai' was second on my list.Icarus wrote:That's a surprise coming from an Oldschooler. Though you guys probably voted for 1943 Kai. :pThe Coop wrote:The only obvious thing about last week was that Varth was the worst choice of the games available
I've played Varth a number of times on CCC2 for XBox, and it just didn't thrill me. While the length was an issue (getting 45 minutes in after doing well, and knowing that it would be another 45 minute play minimum to beat it, didn't thrill me), but mostly is was just not all that interesting. It's not a bad game, but compared to the other two, it was no contest for me. The '19' series has always been fun, and last week was the perfect chance (and excuse) to finally get to play XX.

As good as 'Kai' is, the whole weapon timer deal is a downside for me. If I pick up a weapon, I like to keep it until my ship explodes in fiery glory... not have it just vanish. That's a feature I'm not too fond of in shmups when it comes to main weaponry.Twiddle wrote:i thought you were oldschoolThe Coop wrote:19XX here. I was able to play them with no problems since you let us know which exact version of MAMEPlus you used to record the INPs. You gave me some new boss strategies. The Coop wrote:I sent a number of INPs to my team (via MAMEPlus). Whether they were able to play them might be a different story, but I sent them. Seemed easier to show tactical ideas and special spots, than to try and write them out.
Learning that you could charge the bomb (thanks again The Coop) forced me to switch my controller layout though. I had a hard time getting used to it. I use a playstation type controller and had 'x' binded to auto-fire, '[]' to regular fire and 'R1' to bomb. I kept getting confused trying to do a charge shot while my bomb was charging (I'd let the bomb go off by accident).DMC wrote:The bomb feature was great though.
fast response - check
panic bomb (weak) - check
planned bomb (strong) - check
time limit before bomb explodes by itself - nice
Agreed, that's one of the main reasons why I chose 19XX over 1943 Kai too. That and the fact that I felt I could progress a whole lot further in 19XX within the week we were given. Having to no miss the level and S rank the boss to be able to score good sucked though. The Coop wrote:As good as 'Kai' is, the whole weapon timer deal is a downside for me. I played one credit each of 1943kai and 19xx before I voted. I checked out Varth last year and I don't remember it being particularly appealing. 1943kai reminded me of 1943 for NES, with the huge hitbox and large number of stages. I figured playing through a dozen stages over and over would not be very excellent. (on the NES I had no qualms about continuing, so I played to the end a few times.) Having to speed-kill the bosses in 19xx has the benefit of them not shooting as much, so in a way there is less tendency for errors. No voter's remorse here.
Enjoy your opinion, I guess. Can't criticize what's not been explained to me.The Coop wrote:The only obvious thing about last week was that Varth was the worst choice of the games available :PEd Oscuro wrote:I'm agreeing with the people who said the score system was anal and frustrating (that is part of the reason why I never increased my score, FUCKING RESTARTS drove me mad).
Before the week:
"I WILL VOTE FOR THIS GAME CUZ VARTH IZ 2 LONG"
After the week:
"I SHOULDA VOTES 4 VARTH CUZ TOO MANY RESTARTS"
hello and welcome to obvious world where the obvious is obvious and even poor players saw it coming!
The rest of us saw 19XX was trying to lure us into its van to take us to deep, dark, obsessive parts unknown.
Varth is long enough that even the better players would have struggled for an ALL, and in one week's time I think that's better than going for the OCD scoring mechanic.
Although I must admit that I'm a supporter of the caravan shooting idea... :D
