Glad to hear it!SockPuppetHyren wrote:I actually have to thank you for this post. Before then, I didn't like Sonic CD because I couldn't understand the mechanics in the game, or what the time travel function was for. SNIP
The levels are not haphazard, people's playing skills and expectation were.
I picked it back up today, and did a lot more exploration, and I found myself enjoying the game a whole lot more.[/i]

I should also apologize for much of my tone in responses in this thread. SkyKid started this thread like flame-bait, and I followed right in.
It really makes me pissed to hear people deride a game based on their misunderstanding of it, and Sonic CD has received a lot of that over the years. At this point it really just boggles my mind that people are still so confused and unaccepting of the game. Especially when it is one of my most played and enjoyed games of all time.
I actually did try the Time Attack when I purchased SGC for J-PS2, but without the pause-suicide I got too frustrated with Zones in Metallic Madness and Wacky Workbench ...you can really screw yourself and have no chance at a decent time if not playing careful and calculated.Ganelon wrote:Yeah, I'd be in the same boat (well, slightly later since I didn't have a Sega CD back when they were $200) but I just unlocked everything in Sonic CD again when SGC was released and Time Attack was just as straightforward as I remembered it to be.
The only challenge I've had in Sonic CD were the SGC-speed special stages; I'm pretty sure one of the later stages took me over a dozen tries, which was pretty shocking since I remembered them to be of average difficulty in the SCD version.
So, then, I sat down with my CDX for an hour or so last night and accumulated a decent total time for Time Attack of 27'48"13 and unlocked the DA Garden.
Racing Metal Sonic in Stardust Speedway took me over a dozen tries but then I remembered to get on the upper platforms and avoid the roller-coaster raceway where Metal Sonic kept killing me.
Overall, it took one or two tries on each of the Zones to unlock DA Garden, but shaving off 4 more seconds to unlock Visual Mode will seriously require me to put in a bit of effort, just as i remembered from 1993/94.
I had forgotten DA Garden is also a Sound Test mode, it was pretty enjoyable sitting back and listening to some of the tunes last night. The North American version definitely has the best soundtrack imo. In that release we get the best of both worlds: some Spencer Nilsen tunes, and some Naofumi Hataya & Masafumi Ogata compositions.
