Galaga Legions (XBLA)
I'm liking this game the more I play. I noticed there are a lot of extra formations to be had if you're fast enough. I wish I understood the scoring a bit better though. Haven't really played enough to figure out what really nets good scores. Don't know if it's always best to go for the cores or or milk the formations. Seems situational in that regard but I'm not sure.

This is actually a fun little game. It's also a bit difficult too.
Is there any way to get any continues in this game, or is that it? I know you can up your lives, but I get killed a lot.

you want to shoot as little of the green guys but enough to get a 16x combo. Then destroy the yellow orb for maximum score.seiatsu wrote:I'm liking this game the more I play. Nope. It's just a matter of playing the stages individually and memorizing the patterns, then linking it all together in Adventure Mode. It is hard though. I've just been playing casually and it's not cutting it. Memorization is pretty much necessary to surviving. That last stage is a real bitch.evil_ash_xero wrote:This is actually a fun little game. Hope & Sorrow
Pleased with the game so far; a little hard, but I can't hold that against it because Namco did a great job with it. Like Soul Calibur IV, they really outdid themselves again, and the game plays nice. I like the sort-of manic approach, and they adapted it to the series well.
Sad, however, that there's no 2P online play. Very sad, actually...
On another note, it might be cool if they release it on PS3, too, so that PS3 owners can play this cool game!

Re: Hope & Sorrow
I don't know about you guys, but with all the shit going on past the second stage adding in the factor of all the bloom, I wouldn't be able to keep track of what's going on if there were another player on screen. It just wouldn't work all that well in this particular case. I could also see it being fairly confusing dealing with your options efficiently when you've both got them laying on the screen some where. Plus, online XBLA games don't have that much longevity. People just stop playing them after a short time.BAD wrote:Sad, however, that there's no 2P online play. Very sad, actually...
So I can kind of see why they maybe didn't even bother.

yeah, that's kind of what I gather too...however, sometimes i don't follow that rule and shoot more individuals than cores and end up with more points on said stage (not always though) so I'm not sure what else is coming into play here. I've also noticed that oftentimes my multiplier goes much higher (based on when it flashes onscreen when you finish off the formations) than the standard 16 that the combo meter at the bottom allows. I remember offhand seeing 32 and 100 onscreen however, I'm not sure what triggers those numbers. I'm also wondering how time comes into play (aside from getting the hidden grouping / formations to appear)
About continues...they aren't necessary imo. Besides the fact of being against all stg laws (=p), you are definitely getting one on section 3 of every stage. Most stg's don't give out that many consistently. I'm not sure but you maybe be able to get some for scoring well too (just a guess here since that's pretty standard for most arcade style games)
Are they multiplying anything, or are they just plain numbers? Because I've seen larger numbers, but they weren't multiplying anything leaving me to assume I had lost the multiplier for some reason (too much time passed between me hitting something?). I've yet to see a multiplier bigger than 16.seiatsu wrote:I've also noticed that oftentimes my multiplier goes much higher (based on when it flashes onscreen when you finish off the formations) than the standard 16 that the combo meter at the bottom allows. I'm having lots of fun with this at the moment. It's fantastic. The gameplay mechanics are very different from Galaga's (pretty much as Django has described them), certainly, but I wouldn't have been interested in a straight update anyway. If you stop expecting it to be Galaga 2008 and try to play it on its own terms, you'll soon discover a really well executed game concept.

Bought this last night.
Love it. Absolutely love it. As I knew I would, it being another game from the genius dev team that did Pac-Man CE.
It's quite the difficult one though.
But Im enjoying every minute of it.
And in response to something up above, I also notice that with XBLA games, people really do just STOP playing them after a time.
I think though part of that is how big Live is. Some people just have no attention span, and are only playing these "casually". Others though, probably like many of us here, dont just drop a game cause something new and shiny appeared. I know I dont.

Got the game a couple of days ago. And while it bears almost no resemblance to the original Galaga, it's pretty fun. Extremely hard too. Probably the toughest game I've ever downloaded from XBLA.
I'm sticking to the championship mode in order to see the later stages. Not sure I'll ever be able to go and play Adventure mode's stages 1-5 back to back without any continues.

Re: Galaga Legions (XBLA)
Can anyone identify the name of who's credited with the music in the credits? The font is really bad on a CRT. All I can make out is "LinjeAI-CUG". Could someone check please (preferably someone with a HDTV)? You don't need to complete the game to see the credits, there's an option to view them in the Help & Options menu.
*edit* no matter, turns out the in-game credits are incorrect anyway.

Oh come on, what the fuck did they do to Galaga. This has nothing on Demons of Death, of which I find to be the best shmup of all time. Well, Space Invaders Extreme wasn't bad but this looks like crap. They're making a mockery of one of my favorite games. I am truly filled with raging anger.

Re: Galaga Legions (XBLA)
i enjoy this game
ive no particular emotional connections to the original galaga or its playstyle/mechanics, so this reboot/rebuild
is totally great to me.
it's definitely a new take on the genre, and it feels especially novel in this Cave-supported stagnation-generation
i hope the NEW new Galaga [DX] sticks to the same mechanics

Re: Galaga Legions (XBLA)
smh, its not even Galaga since they tweeked and nerfed the gameplay so fucking much. Its just a spin off on Space Invaders Extreme, an inferior one at that

Re: Galaga Legions (XBLA)
I hope they go back towards real Galaga. Legions is such a horribly stringent memory test. Not as fun as it could be.

Re: Galaga Legions (XBLA)
Legions is more like Gaplus if anything, but I think Namco wanted to pull a Midway and slap the Galaga name on it for marketing. Still not too bad IMO.bcass wrote:I hope they go back towards real Galaga. Legions is such a horribly stringent memory test. Not as fun as it could be.
I wouldn't mind a "Galaga 2088" TBH- the original Galaga '88 is amazing and probably the best ever.
Kinect? KIN NOT.
