Re: Daioh (ARC)

For most of loop 1, I ignore weapon upgrades after I get the three-way laser and homing missiles. Personally, I think these are sufficient until the last boss. I don't know if it matters, but I space my upgrades at the start of the game. I get my first at the beginning of level two, another at the end of level three, etc. Basically, I try to be just strong enough to handle threats.

With multiple speedups, I've noticed that the game gets harder than usual around the middle of level four. I avoid them until level seven, where you pretty much need one to consistently dodge the last boss' attacks.

Bomb testing! I ran both of these tests multiple times. Apart from bomb collection, my play was almost identical.
Test 1. Got every bomb; the game is a little harder in levels one and two.
Test 2. Never had more than three bombs. Easier in the beginning, little difference (if any) near the end of loop 1.
So, I collect and hoard bombs. (A qualification. I don't know what happens to the rank if you have a really inflated bomb count. I've never had more than ten at once.)

Does anyone know if the yellow point items affect rank? I've been avoiding them just in case.

Even at low rank, some areas require a fair amount of memorization. If you're having trouble somewhere, let me know and I'll share my strats and routes.

Wow. That's a great score, man. I never thought to avoid powerups when I was playing.

Thanks. I couldn't get anywhere when I grabbed every item, so I guessed that rank was afoot.

That's a totally respectable score, Dave--levels four and five are tricky, and I'm guessing you had to deal with higher rank.

Does anyone know of a good strategy for the last boss? His final phase seems to require simple tapping, but surviving to that point isn't easy.

I worked out a passable method for the last boss. The short version:
1. Point-blank and destroy the left shoulder w/ spread shots and two or three C bombs.
2. When the boss stops shooting and charges its laser, destroy the right shoulder.
3. W/ both shoulders destroyed, the relatively easy final phase begins.

Incredible. You're making me really want to get back into this game. If only I had the time.

I think this is a good as it gets. I'm no good at fast bullet patterns. Very good game checkpoints only hold back the greatness a little.

The bullet speed is actually pretty modest if you do everything possible to keep the rank low. In addition to what I wrote above, here are two more tips:

1. Avoid yellow point items. In a recent practice run, I got all of them and the difficulty went up quite a bit.
2. If you see a purple P, let it fly away. The rank should go down after a few seconds.

the two versions are contained within the same romset, you switch with dips

you were probably playing the US version because it's default
