Ignorance is bliss.
Haha, same here. Then I checked out BM's Dictionary thread.
Played some more Souky tonight and put it on Difficulty Level 6 (one above arcade difficulty). I started out with the green ship because someone here said they liked it -- BAH! The green ship is weaksauce, rotating that Layer Section-esque missile guiding thing is a pain.
I like the game a bit more than my initial impressions now that the game's a bit harder, but still -- it's nothing more than a merely OK shmup to me. Everything about it is still generic in some aspect or another, but at least the game starts to really pick up for me on Level 3!
Other than that, wtf @ deeko.com saying this is #9 on their Top 10 shmups list.
TWITCHDOCTOR wrote:Nah, not those games. But when I was really playing Souky and Garegga, I didn't really notice a "rank", even when shooting everything and grabbing all powerups.
I guess maybe, if I played the games in a more "conservative" way, maybe then I would see what the big deal is.
If my memory is correct, I was getting up to stage 5 in Garegga (lightning backround) by grabbing and shooting everything on site.
I haven't played either game in quite some time though.
Ah, I gotcha. I was the same until September. Since then I have been playing very loosely with the rank in Garegga, getting full power weapon but not grabbing extra powerups and sticking to one or two options, being careful not to shoot into empty space, shooting the flamingoes, ect. Just doing those 4 things alone upped my score from 1 mill to over 3 and a half mill. But I still refuse to suicide, only when I'm really desperate and to 1CC it will I start doing that someday. So I guess I have found a happy medium (at least with Garegga, I still haven't had much luck in tricking Souky into giving more bombs hmmm )
I don't care how intense the difficulty is when I ignore the rank, Garegga is still a perfectly designed rush and in my top 3 all time fave shooters.
LoneSage wrote:I don't play for Rank at all, only when I'm interested in topping a hi-score. Why play a great shmup for rank if you're not going to have fun with it?
That's how I view Garegga too. I only got into the rank because I wanted to break my old 1 mill score. Otherwise I mow down everything and grab powerups like a banshee. ha
BulleMagnet wrote:I keep forgetting who it was on this forum who suggested, some time back, the concept of "optional rank,"
I did, but not exactly suggesting a concept (that's something i leave to other people) but explaining a mechanic and bla bla bla ( Randorama non ripete , sorry).
This thread however reaches a new low in stubborness, i have to say. Some of the comments i've read so far sound like "Uh, what the fuck is gravity?", it's hilarious
"The only desire the Culture could not satisfy from within itself was one common to both the descendants of its original human stock and the machines [...]: the urge not to feel useless."

Apart from the stage 3 boss, the game really gets into gear at stage 5 and 6. When I started being able 1 life stage 5 it was extremely satisfying, I can now do the same with stage 6 apart from the second last part of the last boss. No other game has got my adrenaline pumpin so much since... umm probably panzer dragoon saga's end boss lol.
There definetly are some stages in in the game that require the use of the gun for added safety, such as the turrets in stage 5 that will spew a spiral of orange bullets if you only use the pinpoint laser, where as if you give a quick burst of fire after the laser they're completly destroyed. Same with a few other enemies
