You also need to view all the story archive pages. Which hellsinker guide didn't mention this?

jajajajaja yeah, you're right. In fact i've only read some scratches of different guides so i had a vague idea what i needed to get what i wanted. But man... this shmup has such an interesting story, is a pity there is so little information about it.

And speaking of which, What is exactly THE UNNAMED 771? The spirit kernel of the cat? the spirit kernel of the cat's owner? The owner herself? how is it that the whole extra seems to be on some kind of meta-world with all those "phrases", the dialog on the background, etc? Does that mean i was on that girl's mind? an spirit world? is she a ghost?

So many questions about this game...

I tried playing this for like 10 minutes and it was the most esoteric thing I've ever seen. I'm sure it's awesome, but good lord.

Just download the soundtrack and forget about the game. It's pretty decent played for survival, but figuring out how and where to use your attacks is on the level of Radiant Silvergun. Not conventional, that's for sure.

Yeah, I would do this. In fact, it's what I've been doing... The music is awesome to listen to it all along when going to sleep. Not because it's boring but because it really sets up a nice mood, like "sweet, epic dreams, dammit!".

Anyway, the game revolves around "shoot all the red shit until you hit a boss, then shoot all the shit in the other colour, then shoot the other colour, don't break your chain or your peashooter will get you in serious problems, etc."

Armed Police Batrider this is not.

.. Or you just use the character where there is no such complexity. With Kagura 3 you basically just use a straight shot. Not that RS is cryptic about what weapons do like Hellsinker though.

In the startup screen, set the エフェクト (effect) variable to 精細 or better.

One of these days, I should clear this game with one credit using No Chaser Kagura or Fossilmaiden. Throughout my time playing HELLSINKER, my runs usually end at the Segment 8 Boss. Satisfying it is much harder than it sounds, but I think I fared better with Fossilmaiden and No Chaser Kagura, even though the latter is rather tough to use.

The fact that the music is awesome helps me get through the game.

On the menu screen, press the pause button (Default Key is V) to change the equipment type. This works only for certain characters. (Deadliar has two and Kagura has four, one of them being No Chaser.)

I am 100% certain that reading this thread for 10 minutes would not give you a comprehensive understanding of this game.

Well I'm certainly curious about it now.

Is it free? If not, is there a demo?

Sadly I know absolutely nothing about doujin shmups, except for XOP, which doesn't have enough rainbows or unicorns.

There is a demo that came out on 2004 but the difference with the final game is huge. You can buy the game at amazon JP It costs 1000 yens

http://wiki.hellsinker.tk/wiki/Setup

I would strongly recomend you to not see any video about the game before playing it. If you are really curious, maybe of the first stages. I would describe Hellsinker as an "amusing and totally unexpected audiovisual experience" for a shmup so you may lose a lot of the fun if you spoil ot too much.

Whoa, is this for real? And here Rancor is charging 30 USD for it...

How do you get this seller to ship to the US though?
Of course, that's just an opinion.

No, its a downloadable. As far as I know, you can't find the game on phisical format in japan anymore. It's been sold out.

Uh... When I try to buy it off amazon.co.jp they say "can't ship to this address", implying that it's a physical game somehow.

How would you download it?

As far as I know, there is no legit downloadable version of the game. Ruminant's Whimper had it recommissioned this past July. That Amazon link is for a physical copy, but they will not ship it outside of Japan for some reason, which is strange because I have been able to purchase doujin goods from them in the past. You will need to find someone in Japan to forward the game to you, or pay a service to do it.

Alternatively, you can also purchase the game from Nanapo's new start-up doujin game store, which does ship overseas. Make sure you read the English shipping instructions here before ordering. The game costs 1000 Yen here too, but overseas shipping is also 1000 Yen.

Demo is here.

Do I need AppLocale installed? The dialogs look like they're written in druidic runes lol

Sorry I should be more specific -- I have Win 7 32-bit -- when I run the "hs_tr_02.exe" I get a dialog box, looks like it's asking me what folder to extract to. I click "OK" to accept the current directory, then I get:

---------------------------
‚¨‚µ‚点
---------------------------
ƒtƒ@ƒCƒ‹‚̃I[ƒvƒ“‚ÉŽ¸”s‚µ‚Ü‚µ‚½B
---------------------------
OK
---------------------------

Click on "OK" again I get:

---------------------------
‚¨‚µ‚点
---------------------------
“WŠJˆ—‚ÉŽ¸”s‚µ‚Ü‚µ‚½B
---------------------------
OK
---------------------------

And then it closes. Awesome!

No love for Rancor's store?
Two working class dudes, one black one white, just baked a tray of ten cookies together.

An oligarch walks in and grabs nine cookies for himself.

Then he says to the white dude "Watch out for that black dude, he wants a piece of your cookie!"

I downloaded the trial onto my test machine and ran into the same error, even with Applocale. As it turns out, the download halted halfway through (doggy butcher mirror), so try downloading it from a different mirror. At least on XP, the trial does not seem to require Applocale or Japanese system locale to extract and run, but you will get some mojibake in the game without one or the other. I think it's better to do everything through Applocale just to ensure that everything runs properly.

With their added 300 Yen for shipping on top of the 1000 Yen overseas overseas charge (2300 JPY), it turns out it costs only a little less than at Rancor's shop to export it anyway.
