Yes, I'm a snob: High Life (or anything else that comes in a 40 (short of Dogfishheads parody of a 40) is NOT beer.Krooze L-Roy wrote:Lots of beer drinkers, eh? Never been a big fan of beer, myself. You'd like it in the UK. Most of my friends don't consider it beer unless it's ale. We usually call everything else, erroneously or otherwise, lager. Or gnat's piss.CMoon wrote:Yes, I'm a snob: High Life (or anything else that comes in a 40 (short of Dogfishheads parody of a 40) is NOT beer.Krooze L-Roy wrote:Lots of beer drinkers, eh? If it has 'lite' in the title, it isn't beer.
Or maybe we should make a distinction somewhere between 'ales' and domestic lite beers which are all derived from the pilsner style, but not nearly as good.
I continue to believe that most Americans don't know what beer is.
Yes, I am a beer snob.
It's because consumers as a whole are fairly unsophisticated. The best music, art, shows and movies etc are almost uniformly ignored and the mainstream of most every industry is dominated by bland and middle-of-the-road.CMoon wrote:

Indeed. I also remember reading about how America's lame macro brewed beer is a result of the government watering down beer for soldiers in World War 2. They wanted to let them drink but they wanted to keep them sober and when they came back they had a taste for weak, watery beer.mannerbot wrote:Obviously the most popular anything just appeals to the lowest common denominator and offends fewest.

USA - Its very difficult to get even slightly drunk on that watered down beerIndeed. Which, unfortunately, seems to be Bud Light.mannerbot wrote:Obviously the most popular anything just appeals to the lowest common denominator and offends fewest.
Yeah, in addition to tasting like dirty water, light beer makes me feel sleepy and/or full. Not drunk.DEL wrote:Its very difficult to get even slightly drunk on that watered down beer.
I'm not much of a drinker...however I will occasionally buy a long island if i'm eating out.Acid King wrote:What do you drink? What are you drinking? Favorites? Stuff you absolutely hate?
I just dropped $150 on a case of DogFishHead 120 minute IPA. It's cooling in the fridge as we speak.
Where I used to live, we'd mix Hyp with cognac to make "Incredible Hulks" (cause it would turn green). It was hard to get the proportions right for it to taste good, but when you got it just right, it tasted awesome. Got the ladies good and smashed too.
It's more like big American beer isn't real beer. I think the best American craft beers can stack up well against the best output from Europe or any other country for that matter. If ratebeer.com's best lists are any indication, America produces a sizable chunk of the worlds best beer and has the worlds top 3 breweries (obviously this is up for debate). The thing with beer is that there are so many styles that it's almost inevitable that you'll find atleast one kind that you'll like.Krooze L-Roy wrote:
As far as all this talk of American beer not being "real" beer, you guys might be right (I mean, it is kinda ridiculous that you need 40 ounces to get a slight buzz). I'm not a big fan of beer, and maybe that's the reason why. Dark or rich beers (fancy-pants beers, we call em) taste like shit to me, but that's probably just because I haven't aquired the taste. Maybe this calls for some further... investigation on my part, eh?

Maybe if the book thread didn't have such a scary title. But then you shouldn't judge a book by it's cover.Arvandor wrote:The booze thread is way more popular than the books thread. Sad, no? ^_^
.....Local Drinks in St. Kitts
Local beers include Carib Lager Beer, Skol, and Stag Lager Beer, all brewed on the island using imported hops. Belmont Rum, whose slogan is “White and Gold Goes Straight to the Soul,” is also made on the island, as is Brinley Gold Rum in Mango, Coffee, or Vanilla.

Here in Pennsyltucky, liquor stores are a state owned monopoly so it's hard to get smaller brands in stores.CMoon wrote:
As far as Jim Beam--you certainly can do worse, by why not shoot for something just a little better, like some makers, or any number of smaller distillers.
