Play the Saturn version? Try a different emu (Gens+, Kega Fusion, etc.)? The original Genesis and MegaDrive game have slow down in them... period. The only way you're going to get rid of it, is via Saturn version, or by tinkering with the emus themselves to find a setting that puts the emulation into a kind of "overdrive".

Or overclock your Genesis ;)

Looks like I'm going to have to finish up this leg of the tournament in emulation on my laptop if I can't clear more than a couple of levels before leaving tomorrow...

I don't what OS you use, but here (a P4 3.0, w/ 1 GB Ram Memory and a GeForce 6500 w/ 256 MB), dgen runs smoothly on Linux. :D

Ok, let me get this straight. We're playing Thunder Force IV and we can only die once right? After we die once we pause the game and get our score. Right?

Here's my top score so far...
This game is vicious...

It seems that once you get the Blade's though, the Air Raid level (I think that's what it's called) is just a gold mine for points.

Yeah, that + play on maniac mode.

That's the only thing I was sure of.

This is trouble. I can hardly score above 5000 regularly. What is the best stage to start on?

Been playing a bit and the best I could do was on Strite with a score of 31,880. If I can get pass the boss I should do better. I think its 20,000 for the boss alone but he keeps killing me at some point in the battle. Hopefully I'll get through that and then gain more points in the next stage.

Maybe I'll do the Air Raid stage next? I'll have the blade right at the start.

Yeah, I'd say Strite is the best one to start off with.

Shit, why'd I have to open my mouth?

I was on the brink of clearing Eliminate Down and had to spout off some stuff about milking... -_-

I understand you want to increase the challenge to be more difficult than just clearing the game on maniac mode. But still the game itself, when played for score, motivates the player to keep his lifes for the end of game bonus. So the top players still want to finish the game with one life. But since the playing field is very varied how about we keep the initial 3 lifes in stock or 2 or something alike. It's just an idea and I might be wrong, but I think it might be more enjoyable for the majority of participants this way. :)
I tried to choose an enjoyable game with ED, but everyone wanted to exploit it, so kicking your asses now takes precedence over fun  Plus, it's not that bad, Coop is already on Stage 7.

I can assure you I didn't. My version allows me to choose 0 lives without the 99 lives cheat. So I only died once, paused the game and took the screenshot. :D
Well, anyway, it seems that Coop is gonna be the winner. I think that probably no one is able to top his score. :P
I haven't had the needed amount of time to practice. I've been promoted two weeks ago and working a lot more since then. :?

When you get the first extend on 10k I would have thought you'd get a few more reaching that score, that's why I too thought that you died more often...

Anyways, can't get over 40.000 points right now :(

Hey, taking The Coop as an example is not fair, he is also known as Team Thunderforcers so you can expect him to clear the game on maniac with 1 life, he have done that before anyway... :P

So, after a lot of resets:

Then why are there three ghosted out ships in the upper right corner?

It starts with one ghosted ship when I leave it at the default 3 lives.

Hmm, it doesn't do that on my version. Oh well, it's not a big deal, I was just curious.

Well, at least I'm not coming in last.

And does changing the engine speed affect bullet speeds? I can't tell.

Ok I have now reached 35,710

I have the day off work and I WILL beat the boss which is 20,000 alone. Then if I play the Air Raid stage I can net an extra 10,000 for the ray gun.

Must....not.....die.......

at this rate I think I'm going to wear out the reset on the ol X'eye!

so long as I can finish a few spots above last then I guess I'm ok. No sense in trying to compete with the likes of The Coop :)

The desert level (what's its name? i'm at work right now) is best suited for me for I can score a good 30.000 till I get to the midboss... this one will always kill me... any strats to avoid his tail attacks? (especially when moving is not save because the ships will spawn above or below you when you don't move).
