Aleanil wrote:Might be borderline, but I enjoyed The Red Star for PS2. Combo beat 'em up / shoot 'em up, and lots of fun for multiplayer coop. Each stage's boss fires out hundreds of bullets in a danmaku-style battle, while you dodge and try to kill the boss with your puny gun. It's reminiscent of Cannon Spike for Dreamcast, but very shmuppy as well, especially the bullet patterns.
And then there's level 8, which is a dedicated side-scrolling shmup stage. ...hella easy though, since the bullet patterns are slow and you have a huge ass lifebar.

Nervous Brickdown (DS) has a pseudo-shmup world in it. Your paddle is a space ship and you can get bullet power-ups that auto-fire at the blocks.

I was playing the shooter stage in Mega Man V recently and wondering about this topic too.

Gunstar Super Heroes follows in its predecessor's footsteps by including a shooter level.

There were several arcade shooters you could find in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas:
Duality - Arena shooter send-up of Ikaruga
They Crawled from Uranus - Tempest clone
Let's Get Ready to Bumble - Colect'em up
Go Go Space Monkey - Your basic hori

Should hybrids like The Guardian Legend and Sigma Star Saga be counted? They don't really fall under "shmup levels in non-shmup games" though, they're delibrate genre-benders.

As I said in the other thread, Metal Slug 3 has several shmup levels. Both horizontal and vertical.

Rocket Knight Adventures definitely has an awesome shmup level. You even have to destroy the core. Sigma Star Saga also has shmup levels.

Amiga and Atari ST only I think. Did the C64 have the shmup stages?
Of course the C64 has the shmup stages. There are three shmup stages, the first one scrolls in one direction, the second in eight directions and the third is mainly focused on speed.

Also, the final stage in the C64 version (1:10) is a vertically scrolling jetpack level similar to those found in the original Turrican, while in the Amiga version you have to keep climbing the level by jumping on exploding platforms.

This is a very good topic.

Two games that come off the top of my mind are:

Digital Devil Saga 2: Has a vertical shmup minigame where you control Cielo.

Sly Cooper 2: Episode 7 has a vertical shmup mission where you control a R.C. chopper hovering over a moving train.

The C64, Amiga, ST games Suburban Commando (based on the Hulk Hogan movie) and Dalek Attack started with a shoot 'em up level and then the rest of them were platform based.

Again...I think of Action Fighter for SMS.

I'm not sure if it was meant to be a driving game or some kind of shmup/driving hybrid (much like Spyhunter was) but when your car sprouts wings and takes off into the air its definately a shmup.

Cave Story
Rayman 2: The Great Escape (at least the PC version). After the end credits you're given oportunity to play a horizontal shmup. You are playing as a capital E (three lives) shooting some other letters (which keep trying to shoot you as well) with the marks of punctation. You have three exclamation marks at disposal, which give you about a second's worth of invulnerability each.
The rear gate is closed down
The way out is cut off

I mentioned the latter way back on the first page in this thread. I love those levels in the GB b/w Batman.

In Penumbra: Black Plague (check out the Penumbra series if you like horror games), there's this password-protected computer terminal that has a hidden "schmup.exe" program in it. You have to collect all 10 secret items in the game and then you get the password after the credits when you beat the game.

The "schmup.exe" game itself was mildly entertaining, but really not worth item hunting for.

If I still remember, a PC adventure game, Machinarium also has a hori-shmup minigame section to reveal a game hint.

Well, Ridge Racer and Ridge Racer Revolution have Galaga in their loading screen.
Also another PSX racing game (Tyco R/C) has a space invader-esque loading minigame with the alien replaced with chicken

In Mario & Luigi 3, there's a shmupish minigame that you play in order to make Bowser super-sized. It's somewhat fun, but way too easy. Also, I only skimmed the thread, but has No More Heroes been mentioned?
