Since someone has resurrected this thread:

In retrospect, I really like Ico. Some will argue there is no point to replay, but Ico is about atmosphere, and unlike SOTC, it doesn't push the game engine, so the whole thing works with a marvelous simplicity. I suppose this is a game that has a hard-on for architecture and little else; but I can appreciate that.

To me there is just something great about running around this empty castle, mostly silent, partly in ruins. Anyone else come back to Ico with similar feelings?

Just to add, it IS the Hong Kong version which has a language option to display in Japanese, Cantonese or English, and has a stunning inside case design and an absolutely amazing (if not the nicest ever) instruction booklet.

I would recommend (although how easy it is to find I dunno) this as easily the best version to own (above the PAL card box one.)

This is my one (bottom left):

i've got the jp and pal sotc. good game.

the US box art for ico is hilariously bad. whassup wi dat?

before ico, i think the only game ueda worked on was ape escape 8)

the games industry could do with more people like him (from an arts background, rather than a programmer background - the guy at the helm of the zelda series since ocarina is a similar case)

even if you don't like his games, they're a refreshing change of pace from the usual shit

Yeah, games localized in the West typically have cover art that pales in comparison to the original, but Ico's is just something else altogether.

I mean, normally the idea seems to be that Americans won't buy a game with an artsy or minimalistic looking cover, so localization teams like to throw a compilation of every action scene contained within the game exploding out in an ugly mess. With Ico, however, we have the original design which is maybe one of the most beautiful pieces of art that has ever graced a video game cover:

And, of course, we have the cover..."picture" that it was replaced with in the West:

Now, some human being actually, genuinely thought that this was a good idea. Imagine that.

If you've ever met someone who worked in marketing in the games industry, it's readily apparent that they don't actually give a shit about what they're doing.

This made me remember a little something...

On the japanese and US version of SotC, you can exploit a bug to get to the secret garden high atop the temple. On the european version this has been fixed, so you'd have to finish the game like 7 times just to have enough stamina to get there.

It's pretty pointless, and will take you years to get there. My mate did it, and said it was cool though. You just need to finish the game seven times, then use your stamina to scale the wall of the temple in the middle of the map.

Best thing about the PAL version: The squirrel in the outro.

*Also, the 'best' thing about the cover of the American version of Ico is that, for some bizzare reason, Ico is white....

You can get up there with significantly less stamina if you exploit the diagonal wall-jumping trick.
GameFAQs wrote:When you grab a climbable wall (usually indicated by the moss growing on it), you have to hold jump and the left analog stick diagonally up until your character swings his arm, depending on what direction you tilted the analog stick. Once he does this, let go of jump and you will scale the wall diagonally without using a large amount of stamina.
Repeat until you find your way to the top. Enjoy, and don't eat the fruit up there.

Yes, but he isn't even particularly light-skinned in the game.
