I would have walked straight out. I can't be surrounded by that many slack jawed morons in such close proximity.
You didn't grow up with this, did you?
Actually I have a vague recollection. But how does that vindicate society's hard of thinking whooping and cheering at events in a terminally offensive example of Hollywood formula dross?

After the I Love You too phone call I had a conversation with my girlfriend about the best example of it in a movie. The guy next to me didn't care, since he'd long given up paying attention and was trying to eke out the remainder for the sake of his partner by playing on his phone.

In the end it's Empire Strikes Back of course. Flipping the trope on its head with the cool arrogance of "I know" while enroute to incarceration is frankly unbeatable. Too cool for school.

Tell me you didn't "aww" at the adorable scene when the male creature presents the nuclear missile to his mate as a present. Such a touching expression of love between two monstrosities!

Anyway, I'm not in the least bit surprised that you didn't like this movie, Skykid. I'm willing to bet that if the exact same movie had been made 30 years ago or whenever, in Japan, with classic stop-motion methods instead of modern CGI, you'd be all over it.

Nonsense.

If it presented a well thought out and executed example of classic cinema, using creativity and imagination to stage its events and actual actors to propel its narrative, then perhaps.

That you can't identify the difference between utter bottom-of-the-barrel big budget waffle and earnest film making means we shouldn't be having this conversation at all.

But I'm glad you got your moneys worth. Michael Bay called and said he's already laid claim to your next thirteen dollars right after he finishes taking a shit.

Skykid, why in god's name do you even bother going to the movies? I understand it's cheap in China, but it seems like a massive waste of time when you pretty much hate every new movie you see. I just don't understand why you waste time and money on entertainment you will more than likely think is shit. There are hundreds of existing movies that are worth digging up and probably other more fulfilling activities you could use your time for than watching the latest dreck at the box office and grousing about it on the intertubes.

Personally, modern movies are much like modern video games. So few pique my interest that I hardly ever bother going to the theater. Whenever I see a trailer or hear about a movie I might dig, chances are I'll never get a chance to see it in the theater (See Filth, Blue Ruin, the Rover, and Cold in July) and I'll have to wait for a DVD release. By this time in my life I know enough about my tastes to be more selective and not waste my time on the latest AAA blockbuster studio movie just like I know not to waste my money on the trillionth iteration of Call of Duty.

Imagine a remake of the original Godzilla with Bryan Cranston as the eye-patched inventor of the oxygen destroyer!

In fact, how about a Godzilla/Breaking Bad crossover where only Walter White's blue meth can stop Godzilla, but how can he deploy it without Hank catching on?

I don't know what you mean, I enjoyed both X Men and Edge of Tomorrow. It's just Godzilla that really sucked ass.

But yes, movies are cheap and I'm limited in options. I'm a movie goer, what can I say.

It didnt really suck ass. it was "okay". But i did feel the movie was missing something. may be if they didnt worry so much about the bomb and gave godzilla some screen time, like more than fifteen minutes. That said, considering the crap that usually is out, godzilla did "okay".
also, bryan cranston was the only one i cared about in this movie. ken watanabe was all like "dude, wheres my godzilla!!!" the whole movie

I walked out on Godzilla. I assume whenever they get around to the big action sequence at the end that is as clumsy and contentless as the characters' faces.

Not really. They're just better at spotting nuances and judging general themes and trends. I'd say they're better at enjoying the good stuff and worse at tolerating the bad. Although I do think I'd enjoy movies a lot less if I were one of those chaps constantly on the look out for continuity errors and the like.

I own such movies as Knight and Day, Dracula 2000, Firefox, Gone in 60 Seconds (both versions), Star Trek V: The Final Frontier, and a bunch of shit starring Steven Seagal. If I am "too analytical" to sit through a movie, what does that say about the movie in question?

Big Lebowski

One of those movies people generally praise so I came into it with skepticism that maybe it's an overrated comedy but nope, I loved it all the way through. It seems all disjointed at first but it comes nicely towards the end, I won't spoil the ending or the resolution contained in it though.

How can you not love the "Dude" (Jeff Bridges), he's such a stoned lazyass that it's hard not to laugh at his screwups and Walter Sobchak (John Goodman) made for a HILARIOUS character, always saying he's calm while he goes on snapping in half everytime someone tries to make logical sense and then brings up A LOT of things that he keeps bringing up over the film, everytime he spoke, it was hard not to laugh.

I should rewatch it some months later, memorable film for sure. Now... to watch Pulp Fiction soon.

Okay, now that that's out of the way, I saw Edge of Tomorrow on sunday. It's a pretty good movie. So good that even Skykid enjoyed it!

I'm sure people can poke all kinds of holes in it, being that it's a time-based movie with a Groundhog Day premise, though the explanation they provide for it is much better than "fate is conspiring to bring the protagonist together with this one girl so it resets until he gets it right", in my opinion.

I have also just seen Edge of tomorrow with my brother. Not sure if this is common knowledge but its base on a light novel, not read it but it was adapted into a manga by death note people. Published in jump square i think. it's call all you need is kill. The film actually has some nods towards the original source. In the manga the characters get nick names like topgun :). The main character is killer cage, so that became bill cage. And the female character both like coffee. The aliens work a little different in the manga but its pretty well adapted into the big screen. The manga ending is ten times better and the hollywood ending left a bad taste in my mouth not enough to ruin the film tho. all in all i enjoyed it.

I hate to tell you this, and please don't take offence but there's no softer way of putting it: you don't possess the ability to judge film (and maybe not limited to) in anything except a superficial fashion. Don't be perturbed by this, you are part of a vast majority that keep substandard dreck churning in millions of dollars. These movies are aimed and tailored for you.

But suggesting one can't suspend their disbelief and enjoy a popcorn movie is incorrect. If it's good at what it does, it can be enjoyed by all.

I don't really hate Euroshmups, either. Don't get me wrong, I'm not defending them or anything, I just don't like to shit on an entire subgenre. I see the point you're trying to make, but this isn't really the same thing.
Skykid wrote:you don't possess the ability to judge film
If this were true, then that would mean I'd be seeing movies like 21 Jumpstreet (as well as its probably just as bad sequel), those madea movies that I don't care to name, or the countless movies that exist in the genre of "college party movie". I have standards, too. You know what I do instead of watching these crapfests and posting about it here? Something different.

Also, have you ever considered that your standards might be abnormally high?

Gun Crazy.
Starts off a little too far back in the story, but once it picks up it gets good. Some nice camera shots for 1949, especially during chase scenes when the camera is right in the backseat looking forward so you see just like Lorri and Bob. Or as those annoying kids in the move call him, Uncle Bob. Nice movie with a nice twist a little ways in, and the action is solid. Nightfall is the next movie up to watch. Hopping this will be good Noir stuff.

Nowadays, perhaps yes. The bar has been set so low.

Once upon a time the ideal for movies was a strong script with relatable characters and a compelling narrative. Then special effects came along and for a time the dual drives for story AND spectacle stood side-by-side. Don't forget, fucking Mario Puzo, of "The Godfather" fame wrote the script for the Christopher Reeves Superman. Sure, there were many, many films that fell short of that goal, but enough succeeded that the late 70s through the early 90s were just a cavalcade of great, memorable films, like Back to the Future.

Now you may want to look away, Satori, because I'm going to hit you where it hurts. The one film I put all the blame on for ruining movies ever since is The Phantom Menace. The cat was out of the bag for all the soulless MBAs who run Hollywood that you could have an insultingly terrible story with irritating characters, but as long as it was attached to a name franchise and had plenty of special effects to jingle keys in the audience's face for 2 and a half hours, you'll make shitloads of money.

It's been nothing but franchise reboots penned by uberhacks Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman ever since.

Tbh, I haven't seen the prequels (especially The Phantom Menace) since I was in my mid teens, so I haven't had the chance to watch them with an adult perspective. In my eyes, though, Darth Maul saved it from being not memorable at all, since he's one of the most bad-ass Sith Lords of all time. (imo)

I do agree that there are movies that seem to be made for the sole purpose of showing off special effects. There's a movie coming out, I think it's called Storm Surge or something, about a massive tornado that causes massive destruction or some shit. The preview didn't tell anything and was basically all special effects and I'm not even sure if anyone was shown (though it was cool when it showed the tornado sucking up an explosion and becoming a massive pillar of fire, how badass is that) so I definitely agree. It's odd that you mentioned franchise reboots but not Micheal Bay. Did you know he's coming out with a live action TMNT? I've never seen a more horridly disgusting abomination in my life! (to be fair, though, I never liked TMNT to begin with)
