How's the body holding up? I imagine in Washington the weather is more temperate than here in Southern Ontario, pretty much every Protegé I see around here has a lot of rust on it unfortunately.

Nice synthesizer! Bet that cost a bundle.

ShmuppyLove reminds me I recently got an ATH-A900X to replace my broken A900. Even just plugging into a standard on-motherboard HD audio plug it sounds amazing, and deals easily with a lot of music that would distort on my old A900. These are not meant to be headphones with "character;" they're meant to be neutral, just as I like it. The pads (and the usual Audio-Technica top pads to keep the headphones from sliding down without putting too much pressure on your ears) are actually pretty comfortable, if you've got them on right, otherwise they can push in on your cranium in odd ways. The pads are much thinner around than the A900, but I'm not having as much of a problem with huge pads provoking sweating as I did with the A900. The gravity-resisting top wing pads, on the other hand, now have a kind of diamond shape and there appear to be a couple possible drawbacks: One, there's less surface area, so balance and placement may be more key. Two, the plastic supports holding those wings on are thinner, so there's more reason to be cautious of damage. I am not ready to try to swap my old pads for the new; these don't seem too bad so far.

A nice thing is that this is a set of headphones that normally runs $160-ish (and were once offered substantially above that in US markets), but there's a reputable gear store with a presence on eBay that has a whole lot of them refurbished for $125. In practice this just means I didn't get an original box, but instead a sturdy plastic box. Papers and the headphone tray (with wrapped headphone cable and headphone and phono plugs carefully taped-in to the tray) seem untouched; there were just a few flecks of cardboard box paper on the cushions to brush off.

The only website specification that has changed with the A900X is that its resistance is now 42 ohms, instead of 40 as with the old A900. I don't believe this makes any difference, and I don't believe I plug them into any high-impedance sources where distortion or potentially damage could be a problem.

It has all the usual Audio-Technica niceties, like a fabric braided cable. I am going to be very careful with this pair not to run over the cable with my chair as I did so many times with my old pair. Cable management is what did me in, so I think I might go get a little cable to act as an emergency quick-release.

I have no experience with open-ear headphones, but for closed, over-ear headphones these sound very nice.

I learned about the V-Moda M100 headphones at the time I was looking out for ATH-A900X alternatives, and while it has many features that would serve me very well (built like a tank, if possibly a bit heavy, quick-detatch cables to prevent damage if yanked, etc.) it has a reputation for "colored" sound and it is about $100 more expensive than the ATH-A900X, which puts it out of my immediate price range. I look forward to see what that company does in the future, though.

There might be something in the sound quality of the A900X that also seems a bit unusual (and reviewers have talked about a "bit of nasality in the mid-ranges" which sounds right) but it is not a big deal and I am very happy with them. Just fiddling around with some of my usual music choices I already was able to discover (or maybe rediscover) some textures in sound that I hadn't noticed before, which militates well for the A900X.

Heheh, this is my first one!! I can't make a huge case for going pure analog-- they're great for noisy/distorty sounds that tend to get mushed up or aliased in digital, but for your basic analog sounds (99% of subtractive synth sounds), digital is just fine and for a lot of stuff I prefer it (ease of use, compact, integrates with your studio better).

Though, I will say that the MiniBrute is a brilliant design that lets you do a lot with a reduced set of features and controls. I got it first because I fell in love with that design, but also because I wanted something I could just bring to jam sessions, and something I could noodle with without being at my computer.

I also made some patches. This zip comes with mp3 files of what the Brute sounds like: http://extentofthejam.com/BrutePatches.zip

I recently bought one of these brand new and really cheap. The annoying thing is that one of the microswitches on the joystick squeeks when it returns to it's default position. CBA sending the whole thing back for repair/replacement which they'd likely want me to pay the shipping for anyway, so I'll have to get a new switch/Joystick microswitch board.

Nice stick though. I really think the Sanwa is a lot tighter than the Seimitsu that I have for my DC.

Damn, that sucks. I've heard other people complain about that as well so you're not alone! I haven't noticed any squeaking sounds on mine though.

Yeah, I'm really pleased with my purchase! I was planning on swapping out the Sanwa parts for Seimitsu components when I bought it but I'm having second thoughts about that, haha. I might buy another one later on (since they were fairly cheap) and experiment with different parts on that one instead :P
