Shooting Game Tournament 2006
Good news! I just got back from the eye doctor and im not going to loose my eye! Aparently if i would have been hit a centimeter away from where i did i would have trouble reading the BIG E on the eye chart! My vision is improving im on antibiotics and should be back in the game in a few days....in the meentime i will try my best to make some sort of score that is decent but i cant promise much. Aparently God DOES want me to play shmups.....just a few days from now.
Belmont:
Good thing you were somhow still lucky in this "unlucky" accident.
Regarding the play time, I think 1 week is enough. And I also think 1 week break is a good idea, because if the tournament is putting all players under constant pressure they'll lose on motivation. Well, so let's see how the other players see that.
Tychom:
I am sorry I didn't get into the single player rankings yet.

It's a little late anyway but I thought I'd drop in and officially decline my nomination due to the same reasons that I posted in the Italy vs Shmups thread. The Navy is just keeping me too busy for shmups right now unfortunately.
But I appreciate the offer, wish all the teams luck, and hope to participate at some point should this become an annual event. *hint hint*

Edge, I figure I ask before this becomes a nasty problem Monday.
If each week ends at 23:59 sunday, are we going by the GMT time zone thing of 23:59 or are you using your time zone in Germany to calculate the end of this? I figure all us on the Western Hemisphere might be interested if score postings are going to be cut off 4 - 8 hours before midnight on Sunday if GMT is used...and even earlier if you're going by something else. This can lead to confusion and late posts as deadlines in Canada, SA, and US will come to an obscure hour like 7 or 8pm. Even earlier for the Pacific Coast. Feka USA would lose almost all their sunday wouldn't they? I imagine people will be practicing and submitting the game scores in the nighttime after work.
Then the second question is will there be any sort of formal 'grace period'?
A- If we wanted to play strict rules on this, it would be all about comparing the score post time against an estimated # of hours after the GMT deadline passed. But that could be time-consuming and boring to hell.
B- However, if we wing-it to make sure we get every final score posting and the grace period turns out to be too long, people may start pointing that the East are getting an extra (half+) day to play.
C- Then if you were to try to compromise and say something like "ok, well if you're submitting a score in the west hemisphere, you get extra time of say 10 hours after the GMT deadline while East hemisphere stays held to 1 or 2 hours after GMT deadline." People may point fingers saying that's discrimination of some kind.
D- Or we say no grace period, arguing that the west coasts have been also getting all their news "a day early" and have had the exact same time to prepare as the East, so GMT (or any other European/Africa time zone) will stay concrete and use the bottom right of your posting box to determine for yourself exactly when the cutoff time is for your area.
It's kinda human nature to not lift a finger until it comes closer to deadline. Figured I'd give the heads up the deadline may be much closer than people anticipate.
So what are the rules here?

Oh I see, I originally wanted to quit it on Sunday 23:59 GMT.
Yeah, we could also do it by the PST, how much time difference is that by the way? Is it +6-8 hours to GMT?
Well the submission limit should be the same for all participants. Regardlesss which timezone, as they all had the chance to join the week at the same time.
Or I could simply let the week end at Monday 12am GMT.

Edge, do you want some help in deciding the games for the poll, or you already know which ones you will be selecting?
I have a few suggestions for the retro week and hidden gem week, but I dunno if I should post them here, PM them to you, or just shut up
Also, please, no Zero Gunner or Giga Wings Generations... AFAIK there's no way to emulate those games. I personally can't play them, as I don't own neither a PS2 or a Dreamcast.

Mars Matrix? Before you say MM is well-liked, I'll remind you of this shocking thread.BulletMagnet wrote:I dunno, it's pretty well-known and well-liked around here to be a "hidden gem"...
(Maybe Giga Wing can be in Raizing or retro week.)

So what, then you'd suggest a Knightmare week instead?Shatterhand wrote:Edge, do you want some help in deciding the games for the poll, or you already know which ones you will be selecting?

I'd say Super Spacefortress Macross 2 deserves another candidacy in Hidden Gem -week. I don't remember there ever being any real discussion about it and it felt quite fun and good for score comp when I briefly tried it.
While I'm at it: 7 days of play, 7 days of rest is good.

No matter how good a game is, somebody will always hate it. No matter how bad a game is, somebody will always love it.

Giga Wing, retro? I'm not seeing that. And Mars Matrix isn't a hidden gem really, as it's pretty well known (especially around these parts), and it got a respectable amount of attention both before and after it came out. Seems to me, that a hidden gem should be something that got overlooked back when it was released. Something like Whip Rush on the Genesis, or Fantasy Zone on the Saturn/arcade... a game that got good reviews (assuming it even was reviewed), but was still basically ignored by the gaming public for whatever reason.Rob wrote:Mars Matrix? Bingo. I think that would be a good hidden gem, as this is the only place I've come across with more than a handful of people who've ever even heard of itRob wrote:Bio Metal? The Coop wrote: Giga Wing, retro? I've seen so many people say "Isn't that the one with the bugs on the Genesis?", it's not even funny. Well, it is a little, but you know what I mean

Well, it doesn't seem to have concerned anybody else. A week is a week after all.Edge wrote:Or I could simply let the week end at Monday 12am GMT.
Yeah, screw it. Do the simple thing and keep it GMT. That way the math of the deadline is in the bottom right corner for everybody so nobody has grounds to complain.
At least now this discussion is here so it's on the record.
Mentions on the page ones' may be useful to settle upcoming arguements, but that's optional.
Hawaii looks like GMT -10 so the tourney deadline is Sunday 2pm (3pm if on Daylight Savings)
Alaska's GMT -9 so Sunday 3pm (4pm if Daylight Savings)
PST is GMT -8 so Sunday 4pm (5pm if Daylight Savings)
EST is GMT -5 so Sunday 7pm (8pm if Daylight Savings)
And Biometal?...Ugh.....2 Unlimited?...Ugh.....

I must say I didn't vote for it because I voted for Sexy Parodius, as I was trying to stop Blazing Star to win. If I could vote without knowing the partial result, maybe I'd voted for it.Rob wrote:It got STOMPED, so it's a guaranteed losing bid. I voted for it. And yeah, a Knightmare week would be great, hehe

Whatever, I'll just shout my suggestions for the Retro Week, all of them, even though I am not sure if all of them would fit in the description.
Defender - I suck at it, but it's an obvious choice.
Galaga - Another obvious choice
Gyruss -
Super Cobra - I dunno if there's anyy score bug though.
Xevious - Another obvious choice
Star Soldier (NES) - The 1st one of the series, very good gameplay
Sky Jaguar (MSX) - The greatest old-school vertical shmup. Problem is I have some experience with it, and I heard about people playing this endlessly (I've never SEEN this, though)
Beamrider (Atari 5200/Coleco/MSX) - Nice score system, great, ,frantic gameplay. Super Laydock already voted against it though

Argus (Arcade) - Vertical shmup with lots of score opportunities. May be a little too recent though (1986 maybe?), and maybe it has infinite score opportunities
Gulkave (SG-1000/MSX) - One of the very few horizontal shmups by Compile, it doesn't have a crazy score system (here 100 million for beating the boss), the game is very loooooooong and challenging, I'd suggest the SG-1000 version as it's harder.
River Raid (Coleco) - Actually the Atari 2600 version is a lot more known, but the Coleco version is vastly superior. Anyone knows the Atari 5200 version? It may be as good.
Demon Attack (Atari 2600) - The best single screen shmup ever.
Chopper Command (Atari 2600) - Great defender clone with a chopper.
Terra Cresta - An obvious choice, unless it's too recent for this.
There are 14 shmups here. You can take any of them or none of them, as you wish

I think someone could even recommend a good, retro C64 shmup,. but I personally don't know any.
I also have a few candidates for hiddem gem week, but I'll post them later

As long as it isn't Space Bomber or 45 Plus, yes.Rob wrote:BTW, Psikyo week should be between:

Who would disagree with that?
