Mainly I just love its resemblance to something I'd have seen in the checkout aisle as a kid, cheese and all.

Yeah, no, I get what the Chelnov cover is aiming for, but it's simply a distaster of composition. Most covers of US comics are vastly superior; that Daredevil comic is a great example. :)

Agreed with you. I've wanted a copy of the game, on and off, for years, but I think I'll just go ahead and buy a complete US version. I think the Atomic Runner (US) cover isn't too bad, though. Incidentally, like the Daredevil cover above, the Genesis and Mega Drive covers are also set against a backdrop of black/yellow/orange skyscrapers in New York at dusk (including the WTC in all of them). The Mega Drive cover is accurate - interesting to compare it with a image from 2000, it looks like some buildings sprouted up in the intervening years. The US backdrop looks like a fantasy composition of New York skyline icons to me.

Props to the Genesis cover artist featuring the Chrysler building instead of the Empire State Building. (Whoever included it in Parasite Eve seems to have agreed with the sentiment the Chrysler Building deserves more support, too.)

Saw a screenshot of the game while looking for cover images...wow, it's hard to miss how beautiful the game is, even at a distance.

Whoa, never seen the Western cover before. :o Chelnov got the same case of boxart murderface as Sparkster it seems. Well... not that his face is visible on the JP art, but I always think of him as a big softy with his goofy head-swinging running cycle and "wahh!" freakout death animation.

Ah, DECO. You knew how to do title screen skylines. Granted MR is just some random car park (?), but the obvious love of tall NYC-located buildings is still evident.

Finally got my Contra PCB earlier today. Quite good cosmetic shape - a little hair of fibreglass near the connector coming off, the serial sticker was (and is) a bit dirty (and has the word "Contra" written on it...I don't think I'll be forgetting what GX633 is any time soon, thanks) - and finally there are some small marks of rust / corrosion around the raised metal caps on the two ceramic CPUs. Oh, there's also a scratch on the PCB somewhere, out in the middle of nowhere. Good thing no traces were harmed. It was a bit dirty but some careful cleaning has cleared that up.

A tale of woe
There was a reasonably involved rigamarole in actually getting the PCB - the seller tried to FedEx to an address FedEx won't accept, and also included my email address under my name (but I wonder why FedEx used the email address in the name field for their system, instead of my name? Maybe they thought they'd do it by the book and assume I changed my last name to an email address...that they accepted a PO Box address is also a wonder; maybe they just have decided that they'll use such "user errors" as a way to demand more money to send to the correct address). I ended up having to pay extra to get it shipped to the right location.

The seller, for those who don't remember, got banned from a couple forums for neglecting to label a boot PCB. However the Contra is absolutely legitimate. He accepted my offer - same price as the Forum, rather than the higher eBay asking price - and said he had to pay a considerable amount (30 GBP) to ship, which apparently wasn't correctly factored in. I think that he simply didn't know much about the hobby or international shipping options, and those two factors caused problems. I was considering sending some money to ameliorate those costs - I'll have to call FedEx and find out how much they are charging me to have it reshipped; strangely they didn't tell me at the time, nor did they give me an updated tracking number despite a couple requests, and finally the driver just dumped it at the door - of course. Anyway, I feel rather bad about the seller's woes, although a few things happened as a result of the early shipping mistakes that were unprecedented (having both the name and the address wrong, having to pay for reshipment myself - I barely caught the shipment before it left the country when I called FedEx about it!). But that's all water under the bridge now, happily.

More about the PCB

Curiosities: DIP switch settings normal, except that it's set to give 5 credits per coin, and the demo sounds are off. I also will want to use the Flip Screen DIP Switch to set it to the same rotation direction as every other vert PCB. Easy enough to deal with.

EPROMs are labeled as I thought:
633 E01
633 K02
633 K03 <- I don't see this one listed in MAME 0.148.

Four Mask ROMs:
633E04 through 633E07

Differences with MAME: The only thing I've been able to pin down so far is that the much-hated block from the '0' in the continue timer, which remains onscreen in any MAME version I've tried, disappears correctly on this PCB. I don't know if this is MAME's fault or if this is part of a bugfix version.

So...already I can say that I have a Japanese Contra PCB, which makes me pretty happy as it's a board I've wanted for a long time. But on top of this, it might include a rare (original) bugfix ROM. I'll have to get it dumped if so.

Glad to hear it all worked out, at least one of us has to have a Contra PCB! I've settled for the endearingly retarded XBLA version which Konami very kindly released on disc. Super Contra is on another disc so one will buy both. Oh Konami.

I do remember the ill-fated sales thread of April 2013, sounds like it was quite the odyssey. I live in fear of my email ever finding its way into a delivery address, that'd be like waking up one morning to discover my passport now belonged to my house.

drauch, 85-90% of what i watch or read is certainly foreign in english (psychotronic mag, dvd z1,z3, ...). when we like good weird stuff (in korean, polish, indonesian, ...) , we live & reimagine by the picture often (when the plot is subtle & translations or subtitles bad ) ;) . it's good luck for some things that locally some fanatics do books  .

Thanks for the Vid Ghegs. Hmmm, but I dunno, the vehicles and how they maneuver look a little bit wonky. And I guess I'm just a bit spoiled by those triple AAA titles like forza or need for speed, but the graphics aren't too appealing for me, and I like my graphics pretty in a racer. At least, it makes it easier for me NOT to spend more atm. :)

photo from another forum. Brainwavz R1. cheap(est) dual driver IEM's. great sound for the price.
however: over the ear design is a pain in the ass (memory cable isn't comfortable), it's hard to get a
decent seal with anything other than the bi-flange tips and there's significant driver flex. there isn't
proper tension relief (too rigid) so many ppl have had issues with the sound cutting out and cracking.
they're cheap so I don't give a shit if they fail. I wanted to hear the dual driver hype for myself.

Been carrying SP in the side pocket on my thigh. (Wrapped in a plastic bag to protect it from rain.) Triggers ("shoulder buttons") on top, adjacent to me. All days out in the fields.
One of the (original) SP's least appreciated qualities is durability. They endure a lot. Another one is the d-pad.

well, in that case the sp is definitely the best handheld one can roll with.

Picked up MVS Super Spy this week through a local seller. He was working that night, so I met him downtown.

So yea, I met a stranger in a downtown city park, and we exchanged bags. For a game called Super Spy. Somehow fitting?

Super Famicom Bible and NES/Famicom Bible. Both come in really nice packaging and contain both western and japanese hardware/software (and even homebrew). Very comprehensive (history, flyers, box art, etc... you name it).

Any time I see your name in this topic's "last post" column, I know mad jealousy will ensue. :o Those Nintendo books both look amazing (Valken!). Huge props to the publisher for a look on SFC Goemon 3, it's a lovely game and seemingly never mentioned (I was surprised at how good it was when I played recently - a true labour of love by "Team Goemons Factory." I still need to go back and get all those cat statues for the real ending).

Looking forward to Arcus Odyssey. FZ Senki Axis is with the postcards. Used to own it years ago, when I was a less patient gamer, and quickly abondoned it for something like Gunstar Heroes, but it's time to give it another chance. :)

I've wondered about Axis too, off and on - was hoping someone might respond when you mentioned it in the MD thread. I've never had much luck getting into Wolf Team's games, but I do love Japanese mecha action stuff and there's a lack of overhead titles in my collection (I was surprised to learn the other day that Gau Entertainment of Ex-Ranza were ex-Wolf Team, or at least ex-Telenet)

Telenet stuff always has such nice boxart, even Earnest Evans...
