I feel your pain with that game. It's narly and full of hate for the player.ACSeraph wrote:Raging hard at Darius Force's middle course. I want to like this game so bad, but it's like the designers didn't even fucking play it. Enemies and bullets clipping through walls (and being invisible while clipping no less), and the boss Thunderbolt Fan is a fucking joke. They made it so the only part you can damage is on it's back, thus you have to have a piercing weapon. That would be well and fine except A: if you die you are powered down completely and cannot get a laser to fight it with so you may as well just reset, and B: the Type 2 ship doesn't even have a fucking piercing laser. I mean shit, if I can see the problems with it you'd think the people who designed the fucking game could too. It's not even that it's all that hard, it isn't, it's just that the stuff that kills you half the time is shit design decisions, not difficult patterns and enemies. I feel so bad for the guy who did the art design for this game, because their awesome work was wasted on some seriously incompetent gameplay design. /endrant

I got loads of fun out of it. A great example of a frantic shmup perfect for its portable platform.M.Knight wrote:Right now, Metal Torrent on the 3DS. (It is a DSiWare so you can play it on a DSi as well)
It is the kind of game where I can't find the motivation to play it very often, but when I actually do I always wonder why I don't spend more time with it.
This gem from Arika is very enjoyable, it has the visually attractive bonus items of a Cave game and is fast paced. The focus on bullet-cancelling may not appeal to everyone, but I think such a big bullet density on such a small screen would not have worked without this mechanic.
The Random mode is very fun and stays kinda balanced as the composition of the enemy waves is mostly the same as in Pattern mode, but in a random order so you have to adapt to the situation.

Indeed, it is really suited to its platform. The length is also a good example of this, as it is neither as long as an arcade game nor as short as mobile phone and mission-based games.spadgy wrote:I got loads of fun out of it. A great example of a frantic shmup perfect for its portable platform.
