Cool, that'd be handy - there's several games I use it with so if there's a way to run the game via AHK, that'd be fantastic.

Yep, it seems to work, at least for ChoRenSha and Shoot First. Woo!

Stuff like this is why I love this forum.

Thanks! I just got Grind Stormer last year. It's an awesome game. I feel like it's the grandfather of the Dodonpachi series. Ha ha I'd put it like this:

Truxton = great grandfather
Grind Stormer = grandfather
Batsugun = father
Donpachi = son
Dodonpachi = grandson

What's next after Dodonpachi? I'm waiting on that.

Was enjoying my new copy of SNES Gradius III until I got to the final stage speed rush. Terrible fucking design. I absolutely hate stuff that's guaranteed to kill you if you don't know exactly what to do. And yet I still find myself addicted to this series... I just don't get it.

I've been addicted to pink sweets 1.00 lately: when I first got it I was disappointed by how different it was from Battle Garegga, but I've started enjoying it on its own merits (still don't get the retro toy look though). I have so many other Cave games with much better presentation, but for some reason Pink Sweets of all games has drawn me in; I feel like part of the reason might be my desire to 1cc such a brutal game [even though I have literally no other shmup ccs under my belt]. Haven't played arrange at all since I don't want to get softened up for the main game (actually the same could be said for all the other Cave ports: I've never played an arrange mode).

I've been playing Ikaruga again and try to relearn all my old strategies for normal mode. Right now I'm actually very close to my 10 years old PB (30mill) and am probably going to beat it withtin the next few weeks.

Can't wait to improve my score on this! I still need to learn the major chains on stage 2 (bonus rows) and 4 (outer ring).

Gradius generally isn't that bad when it comes to cheap deaths like that. There's like one or two things like that per game (unless it's arcade g3), but after that it's usually smooth sailing.

There also tends to be a lot of rng elements so it's often hard to call them memorizers imo.

I've run into 3 so far in GIII and each time ruined a perfect run up to that point. First was the plant smashing down on top of me in stage 5 (also whats with not being able to see the incoming bullets when they are behind the plant?), the speed section, and getting crushed by a wall in the stage after the boss rush.

I do agree that mostly it's just free dodging, but Gradius has always felt like the king of cheap shots to me no matter which game it happens to be. In the first one you have the volcanoes right there in the first stage. I remember just giving up on it when I first played it as a little kid. Compared to it's compatriot Darius II, I feel like Gradius was way more cheesy even if Darius is harder and requires a more precise route.

Despite all the times it pisses me off though, I secretly love it. It's just really infuriating to have a totally no-miss run all the way to the end only to get crushed by a wall you could have in no way avoided without knowing about it in advance. Combined with (at that point) impossible recovery it makes for some rage induced controller throwing.

I personally would say Darius is more memo though (at least in my experience). It might take 3 or 4 playthroughs at most to learn about all the cheap deaths in a Gradius game, but it took many, many, many credits to find a route through Darius that doesn't result in you getting walled during bosses and stages (and the recoveries lol).

Also I don't remember the plant being that bad. I just remember that he just kinda teleports in awkwardly (probably due to hardware limits lol). The invisible bullets thing is kinda dumb though.

I agree Darius is more memo than Gradius for sure just because it doesn't leave a lot of room for error.

Also yeah the plant is pretty easy once you've seen it once, but the first time you are pretty likely to be either crushed when it falls down, whacked by an invisible bullet, or both.

Actually the game in general is easy, seems roughly the same difficulty as Otomedius, if not easier. Just has cheapo deaths thrown in for "spice".

TxK [Vita].
tl;dr for the incoming wall of text:
It's pretty much a revised Tempest 2000, and that's good. Looks good, sounds good, but silly intermission tilt controls and can take a bit to start if wifi is on when loading the game.

But here's the wall of text anyway. Take note -- kind of not proofread entirely, and I'm too lazy to fix some of the more egregious errors. :P
==the good==

* It's pretty much a revised Tempest 2000. We're starting on a high note.

* It looks great. Very crisp on the display. If you aren't afraid of possible epilepsy [some enemies flash the screen wildly for a moment when killed, looks tame in normal light, super fucking woah in the dark], play this shit with the lights off, screen cranked up to max brightness. You kind of get some of the feel of a vector display, which is nice [seriously, I remember playing Asteroids in the arcade for the first time ages ago after playing the Windows 3.1 port to death and being super amazed at the intensity of the lines and the burning bright shots of the arcade -- the latter isn't replicated, but the lines definitely capture it!]

* It automatically pauses and starts whatever MP3 you're playing if you adjust the BGM volume in settings to non-zero or zero respectively. Useful if you've got the Tempest 2000 soundtrack on the Vita and want to jam to that! ;3 T2000-5.mod [lower on page] is probably the best, render that shit in your MOD player with 50% stereo spread [the songs do make use of stereo, but hardpanning sounds awful on headphones usually] and bang it hard if you want.

* That being said, you may not want to use other tracks: TxK's soundtrack is badass. It's more synthy, unlike T2K's 1993-era hardcore techno soundtrack, but calls back to it a little.

* You can deathbomb like in Touhou to save yourself from getting pulled down. Only from that though, particle and beam weapons will just kill you without hope of recovery.

==the bad==

* If you have internet on while starting the game, it'll take ages sometimes since it's trying to connect. One of the advantages of playing TxK over something else is that it loads super-quick, unlike literally everything else on the Vita. :lol: That gets negated a bit if it doesn't immediately connect and the game is just spinning there while you wait.

* You can't disable tilt during the inter-round sessions, and if you're holding the Vita upright, they kind of don't work -- each round, the game tries to do make your tilt control relative to the position the system was in when the intermission started, but it only seems to work consistently when the back is perpendicular to the ground... There's joystick control, but it only works if the tilt direction isn't conflicting with the joystick direction [eg, system tilted to move left a bit, you're trying to move right == nope].

* It's maybe a little too subdued looking. We don't want Space Giraffe style effects, but the visuals are rather sparser than I'd hoped. The super-gradient style featured in T2K has made way for a flatter look in TxK. Mind you, TxK has a more involved look than T2K [flashing colors, more dynamic camera, more vectory, more particles because more processing power], but it does feel a bit flatter and some things don't seem to have the same feeling of "wow!". That being said, I know he said that he wanted the game to look a bit more subdued in this post], so... [also, silly thing: that post won't load properly with TxK open and the browser at the same time!]

* There are yellow enemies that just fry an entire lane with the barest of warning [they stop for a second, and in the chaos of everything combined with the glow of everything get hidden]. If they flashed a bit before to be noticed, that'd be fine.

* I don't think there's an invincibility period upon death, or if there is, it's really damn short. Usually mitigatable [keep shooting, whatever is in your way won't be], but I have died a few times immediately after landing.

I got it for $7.99 since I signed up for PS+, and I think it's worth about that. It sells for $9.99, and I guess that's reasonable, especially if a few of the above issues get fixed.

I really enjoy playing it. It's always "just a bit further" or "just a bit better", and it's got the same kind of pick-up-and-play thing going for it that made Super Hang-On's 3DS port so good for me. Pick the stage you want, go on from there. Do a little or a lot, depending on how much time you have. Keep going with your score, or start from the top [with a separate board, something I wish SHO3DS would have]. Unlike all the rest of the Vita games I've played [which are effectively console games that you can bring with you -- I enjoy that, but waiting to load or trying to find a place to save is annoying], TxK is just a great portable game, accommodating both when you can only play for a few moments and when you want to play for ages.

I'd post this in the Vita thread or the TxK thread, but that'd be preaching to the choir.
So yeah, if you have a Vita, go buy it. Unless you don't like Tempest.

It's definitely one of the easier installments, though Oto is probably easier. It also has a secret diffciulty mode (arcade) with really fast bullets. Only thing that really hampers this is the games unintentional slow donw.

Been trying a little of everything recently, settled down a bit on Bakraid. Keep making it to the final boss then slipping up, I think I've been spoilt by playing too many cave games which supply a ton of bombs to brute force your way through. Doesn't help that there are relatively few bomb fragments on the last stage.

Omega Fighter - for a game made in 1989, it's got a fantastic scoring system based around point blank kills, and has a slowdown powerup, so it did the whole slowmo thing long before Espgaluda. There's also a 'black label' version called Omega Fighter Special that has more slowdown powerups that spawn in the levels to make it easier to score, but there's some confusion in the forum's hi score thread due to the test menu having an option listed as "Special" in both Omega Fighter and Omega Fighter Special which... well it basically makes the game spit 1UPs at you, and apparently the only scores posted so far are playing with that turned on. :\

This is an amazing shmup for its time (built in autofire, an actual scoring system, scoring-based powerups, fuck yes) and it would be amazing to see some pros really give this game some well-deserved attention.

Trying to start an interest in shmups. Been playing whatever I can get on Wii virtual console (also bought a Sega Saturn but no games yet- any inexpensive (preferably co-op) recommendations?)
Been loving MUSHA. Keep dying at last level. Music and sprites are amazing.
Was playing Darius twin with my roommate. It was sight. Switched to lifeforce and holy shit this game is amazing. Hoping to game gradius v after we finish life force.

But hello everyone :)

Trying out a few new things lately:

Omega Fighter:

Bareknuckleroo is right, this game is damn impressive for it's time. It's almost difficult to even believe its from '89, it feels like a modern game given an intentionally retro visual style.

Espgaluda:

Bought this on PS2 last year, but only ever played it once. I like it but it isn't sucking me in yet. Kakusei rank seems kinda stupid, but otherwise I think I prefer it to the sequel. Also might be my favorite soundtrack from Cave.

Radirgy Precious:

Criminally neglected in my collection, gave it a run last night. I think I like this game, but I have no idea what's going on or how the machanics work. Might be devoting some actual time and effort to this one pretty soon.

Re: Shmup Ticker: What are you playing RIGHT NOW?

Post by null1024 »

this was actually all done yesterday

Mushihimesama Futari Black Label [Arcade].
The stick over at my "local" arcade on that cab has a throw of about 3.2km or something. The feeling of moving it almost reminded me of input lag, except if I moved fast enough, I could mitigate that feeling. Eeeps.

and I played Palm the entire night

Managed to lose my first credit before the stage one midboss [at 2 tokens a pop, and $1 for 3 tokens, that was $.66 for ~30 seconds of gameplay!] and considered walking outside into traffic. :lol: That shit was embarrassing.

I did better later in the night [even though there were two other times when I lost most of my lives really early on -- I did manage to recover, and even made it to stage 3 on that last life once].

Black Label feels weird.

Also, being in front of that huge screen might have killed me a few times -- I'm pretty sure I ended up sitting in one of the blindspots people have in their vision and just getting killed out of nowhere, since I never even saw what approached me sometimes. If the screen didn't have a bit of [odd looking] burn-in, it'd have been really cool to play with such a huge display. [what the hell was I doing when I typed this, it just ended with "such a huge" and then nothing...]

Mad Planets [Arcade].

Damn, this is a fun game. Pretty simple, really -- speed-kill all of the planets before they can actually come onto screen, because they are hideously dangerous otherwise. That gets really hard, really quickly -- by stage 5 or 6, you're bound to miss one, and the comets that fly around seem to spawn along your trajectory.

I've taken to playing the game cross-armed [left-hand on joystick, right on spinner, the controls are in the opposite order], mostly since my left hand has more training with moving a joystick.

@ACSeraph : Radirgy's system revolves around two actions : destroying things and destructible bullets on the one hand and absorbing bullets with the shield or ABSNet (the "bomb") on the other hand.

You have two jauges : the blue ABSNet one on the lower-left corner of the screen and the multiplier jauge in the upper-left corner.
Inflicting damage on ennemies, killing ennemies and destroying square-shaped bullets with your shot or sword gives you blue pills that refill the ABSNet jauge. The sword gives more pills than the shot if I remember well.

Canceling a bullet with your shield (stop firing to activate it) or with the ABSNet gives you green pills that increase the multiplier you receive for destroying things. Staying on top of an ennemy with the shield activated will also give you green pills. (Touching an ennemy doesn't hurt you) And as the ABSNet radius is higher than the shield's, you can increase your multiplier more quickly with the ABSNet. The multiplier bar decreases over time if you do not regularly generate green pills.

In order to rack up the points, the basic objective will be to juggle the two jauges to constantly have a high multiplier and frequent ABSNets while destroying a lot of stuff.

Radirgy PreciouS is the PS2 version, isn't it? It is unfortunately not the best port of the game, as it has a lot of slowdown. All the other ports (DC, GC, Wii) are fine, but watch out for the save issues if you play the GC version on a non-JP console.
I hope you will appreciate this game's mechanics. :)

This is really useful info thanks, makes a bit more sense to me now. I didn't even know there was a shield when you stop firing. What about all the random junk you collect (bananas, umbrellas, assorted random shit)? Is there some sort of art to that or do you just pick up what you see and that's it.

And yeah Precious is the PS2 version. I got it really cheap, like 500 yen, but if I end up really liking it I may get one of the other versions.
