Enjoyed some credits of GigaWing Generations and Homura today. Hadn't played either since the year they came out on PS2. Both were difficult for me to get the hang of at the time. Homura continues to be unnatural for me, but GWG was clicking pretty well.

why is this game so fun

Seriously, even though it's got inertia [hell, your weapons have kickback] and all sort of oddness to it, it's crazy fun. Nothing like trying to plan out the best route through each stage while tearing through enemies like a demon, and the stage layouts change drastically based on which order you select, which keeps things interesting.

I only fired it up to see if I'd set up ePSXe's framebuffer effect settings properly, since the game abuses the hell out of them. And then I kept playing.

Getting seriously into PCB again. I'm the crappiest performer ever but I can occasionally no-miss up to the Prismrivers, fighting against them is hell, though. Just recently I think I got the "philosophy" behind each of their attacks, still can't perform it well and end up losing at least a couple of lives during the fight.
I'm also gonna post this so I remember to put it into my biggest screw-ups list for 2014: I just reached Yuyuko on my first credit for the first time on Normal. By the time she was around 2 or 3 attacks remaining I had no more lives. And then I stumbled on a bullet and died, with a full bomb stock(SakuyaA, so that's 4 bombs). Those damn knives, I swear I only touched the hilt slightly and boom, there goes my best credit .

It would be nice if I was better at not getting rammed though, haha. It's also been way too long since I've played, I had a bit of trouble with the free-aim control, I was really slow in adjusting its direction and spread.

Finally on board with Jamestown, and adoring it. Trying the 1CC of Gauntlet mode at Legendary difficulty (the lowest difficulty that let's you do a full run of all the levels; one notch above the 'difficult' setting, so my prospects are bleak).

I love so much about this game; my only qualm is that the 1CC and credit feed runs share the same leaderboards. No way to filter out the 1CCs.

Working on a 1cc of After Burner Climax. I used to think this was impossible, but if you go for a low-score run and keep rank to a minimum, it's very doable. You still have little room for error though, two missiles is all it takes to kill you.

Are checkpoints the only differences?

Checkpoints, firing rate and maybe damage/life balance? In KT ver you can shoot 4 shots at a time, in TC only 3 at a time (those numbers may be wrong, I know they're 1 apart).

That's kind of a bummer. I wonder if it was a hardware limitation that led to those changes, fewer onscreen bullets due to the second ship.

I think health/damage is the same. stuff definitely seems to die slower in TC
