I've got a pretty high tolerance of average 80's OVAs and I got bored after 2/3's of Iczer 1.

Whoa, sweet LD gets!

Jelly of those box sets. Then again, not jelly of the price for shipping
My own LD collection is stuck in a box at the moment since I needed the shelf space, hoping to put up some new shelving soon and get them out of there. It's a bit bothersome to grab them to watch as it is right now. (And a new player would be nice too)

Hm...maybe a thread for Laserdiscs would be fun, or do we already have one, buried somewhere?

Also jelly of these box sets. Needs moar anime, me does...

So I decided to watch the first two episodes of Kyatto Ninden Teyendee to see how different they were from Samurai Pizza Cats... the answer? "It's basically like watching a different show."

well you wouldn't be envious of the shipping prices as someone above pointed out. Even via surface mail, it can get quite costly, as laserdiscs weigh quite a lot.
Anyhoo, I have more coming & will post pics when I get 'em.
Also have something you Gundam tragics may enjoy on the way.

FSS is getting a new Volume!

Here's a manga recommendation: Sing Yesterday for Me, Acony and Hour of the Mice, all of them by Kei Toume. That woman has a lot of talent, all her stories and female characters are so charming.

I'm enjoying Boku Girl at the moment, though I'm not a frequent reader/viewer of manga/anime. Its one of those "boy gets turned in to girl" deals. The art style is really charming, and it has what is quite possibly the most hilarious censorship/foreshadowing combo I've ever seen. A little NSFW/pervy, but nothing too explicit.

Finally went ahead and watched Redline. Left somewhat disappointed, the story is pretty weak overall. I guess this is one of those shows you have to turn off your brain and just enjoy the action. No complaints about the visuals though, they're spectacular.

So, I found a number of Anime DVDs at a Goodwill, much to my amazement as the Goodwill around here almost never has anime.

They had a lot, but I only grabbed stuff that was either a complete series or movie, though I think I got a few that were actually first volumes because the label wasn't clear.

So what I picked up:

* 11 Eyes (dunno what this is but it seems to be recent as its published by Sentai Filmworks)
* Sin: the Movie (based on the FPS by Ritual Entertainment)
* Hades Project Zeorymer
* Burn Up! (the original Burn Up, not W or the sequels)
* Mask of Zeguy (Mask of The Guy?)

And I think I got one more but if so it escapes my memory right now.

they also had Rozen Maiden volume 1 and a few other volumes of other series, including one Ranma, and a "Sidestories Collection" for Irresponsible Captain Tyler, but as I said I stuck to just ones that seemed complete in one go.

When I got home I watched Sin, but it was hard to focus because stupid cat demanded attention. It seemed like a fun if rather unevenly paced movie.

Redline's plot is threadbare. It's a visual spectacle [nearly every frame is wallpaper quality, christ] and the characters are fairly fun, but pretty much any plot it has is just to give some sort of framework for the stuff that happens.
Come check out my website, I guess. Random stuff I've worked on over the last two decades.

Too dead-eyed characters for my liking. A problem with plenty of Japanese artwork nowadays.

*Hits self*

I just remembered the 6th DVD I picked up at Goodwill and I'm wondering what kind of idiot I am to forget that I found this, one of my favorite anime from the pre-Pokemon days when "anime" meant visits to far-away video stores to hunt for thirty-dollar dubbed VHS tapes...

ELF PRINCESS RANE!

Yeah, I need to watch that later tonight.

So,
I just finished watching most of City Hunter some week back. Got like, 1 OVA left or something, and with a big work like that, it's hard for me to remember a specific episode or happening but overall I really quite liked it. I remember not really getting into the manga (Hojo's work seems very hit or miss for me personally) but the anime was an excellent way to spend the last hour before going to bed.

When it comes to 80s anime, I've mostly watched sci-fi stuff so visiting 80's Tokyo was a nice change of pace.
I guess I also have to mention the music, which is fantastic most of the time.

Seeing how much I liked City Hunter, I also picked up season 1 of Cat's Eye recently.
Sadly it just doesn't...I dunno, just doesn't entertain me the same way.
It just feels more simple (in a bad way), episodes aren't as entertaining and the same goes for the characters - some on the verge to annoying.

I don't want to sit here and write that City Hunter is a masterclass in writing & characterisation or anything like that, but I think it's better and it gets *something* right, whatever that something is.

So, recommended, even though it feels like I'm the only person on the planet left not having seen it before

I actually kinda like this one...despite being very middle of the road as far as OVAs go :P
Burn-Up W is also pretty good - for what it is. Excess though...not so much.

I'm guilty of having not seen City Hunter yet, at least not in its entirety. Currently I'm about 20-ish eps into the first series, but I am thoroughly enjoying it despite the formulaic approach to most episodes and Saeba Ryou seemingly only having two modes he toggles between, those being ultra perv 'mokkori' obsessive, and stoic sharpshooting detective. Ryou's voice in perv mode tends to grate a tad.
Still finding it highly entertaining though and will follow up with the sequel series once done with the first.

I'd recommend Golden Boy, GTO, and perhaps Junk Boy to those wanting something along the lines of City Hunter's depravity levels.

Yeah, well, now you clearly know what the rest of the episodes are going to be like
Thankfully City Hunter allows for some variety in it's formula.

Ahah, haven't seen the GTO anime yet. Read the manga what feels like very long ago but I think I liked it. How's the anime? I've seen some screencaps and it didn't look all that great visually, but maybe it's still worth a watch?

Junk Boy was pretty okay (and a bit unusual in it's setting) but Golden Boy is fantastic. It's so well done. Fantastic animation & detailing, love it

I'd love to read more one shots like that but reading scanlations is a painful experience. At least they're free.

Got to the end of the first Fist Of The Northstar cycle :'( Honestly didn't think I'd make it through the first few episodes but it's gripping stuff. I like how colourful the antagonists are compared to the bland hero. And the mohawks.

I've had City Hunter downloaded for a little while so I'm looking forward to that. Though I'm starting to think I should stop watching 80's cartoons with minimalistic palettes.

Apparently, that Redline anime film took a whopping seven years to complete and was all done by hand (a rarity these days when it comes to anime). I'm surprised that a racing game based on the Redline flick still hasn't been released as of yet -- it'd be a no brainer with all that "Steamlight" for nitro boosting to use towards the finish line. With Sega's arcade racing game expertise over the years, it could be really something.

Still is regarded as a fine visual masterpiece and I own it on both DVD & Blu-Ray formats.

Considering that a Redline race occurs every five years galaxy-wide, a proper Redline II sequel would be appropiate -- possibly expect new characters and returning ones + all new venue to host the major Redline race on a different planet. Who'll win this time around?
