Re: Questions that do not deserve a thread
Correct. Another nice thing about going the Duo and up route is that you really don't have to worry about system cards. It will play the vast majority of the CD library. The games express stuff is porn garbage anyway. Then if you decide oh shit I really gotta have access to those 12 ACD games (secretly just Sapphire for most people) the Arcade Card Duo is much cheaper than the Arcade Card Pro.
Not sure what price range you are looking to spend but I skulked around for one earlier this year and got a Duo R w/ some hucards (best one was Street Fighter 2) for $264 shipped. There is an untested barebones unit up for $175 shipped but it's in the US and I'm thinking shipping to UK would murder that deal for you. Something to keep in mind is that you probably have a compatible power supply and composite cable on hand, so cutting those out of the equation when buying if you can could make for a better deal. A lot of sellers will include jank power supples anyway, the one sent with the Duo R I bought was causing distortion on my pvm.

Can poorly shielded or grounded cables cause jailbars to appear?

I don't see any PC Engine games on the Wii Virtual Console page. Have they really been removed?

I was wrong. There are 63 total and 58 available PC-Engine games on the Wii Shop Channel. The PC-Engine is known as the TurboGrafx-16 in North America.FinalBaton wrote:Thanks.

Actually, I've asked that question several times over the course of a week in several threads. It blows my mind that no one here seems to know.

I was referencing the official Nintendo E-Shop, where I couldn't find them, but now I actually found them under "Other". Looks like they are there. I just didn't look hard enough -_-

Re: Questions that do not deserve a thread
I recently acquired a cabinet with a Naomi 1 system. It plays Virtua athletics, which is supposed to be a GD rom game. But, there is no GD rom system. There is a bare pdb inserted where a cartridge would go. Is this a dimm missing its case? So someone loaded a game into it and removed the dg rom drive? If I remove it will it retain the game on it?
Thanks

Re: Questions that do not deserve a thread
So I got some RCA cables in (still waiting on the BNC<->RCA cable), and decided to try running the output from the FC-4044 into the Extron IN1508 that I have. Weirdly (or maybe not), while the IN1508 does treat 240p as 480i, the image looks clean; but, again, I get a ton of noise connecting the FC-4044 directly to my TV, even with the same cables.nmalinoski wrote:Received the FC-4044 today. The good news is that it appears to work! With a Dreamcast running 240p Test Suite via Composite and an N64 running Super Mario 64 via S-Video, and the Kramer hooked to my TV (Samsung LN32B360C5DXZA) via YPbPr, the resolution was recognized as 720x240, and the drop-shadow test actually worked (when it doesn't over composite).nmalinoski wrote:I just ordered an FC-4044 (Before I found this post.); I'll check it for 240p compatibility once it comes in.
The bad news is that I'm getting a lot of noise (vertical lines) with both consoles, and I'm not sure which part of my setup is at fault.
Edit: Photos! They're not good photos, unfortunately. You can see the vertical noise in the first two photos; more so in the 240p Test Suite one. Ghosting is pretty evident in both as well. The image is stable, while the vertical lines move towards the left (sync noise?).
Does anyone have an idea of what's causing the noise? Crappy console AV cables? The RCA<->BNC adapters? My TV having a garbage ADC? Bad caps in the FC-4044?
I have a beefy BNC->RCA component cable on order to replace the BNC<->RCA adapters and RCA cables of unknown origin, but those are probably okay. I also have another TV that I'll try testing with.
Does anyone know what the Extron is doing that my TV isn't?
Re: Questions that do not deserve a thread
The only thing I'm really worried about is if I get it switch it on and I'm looking at the infamous top screen bend that JVC monitors have with some consoles (JVC DT-V thread and few others mention it). The offer I currently have is for £300 for an RGB modded, jailbar fix recapped Turbo Duo-R. It comes without a controller only and that will make it a bit more on top of the high price already. The games for this thing have got to be very good if it's going for such premium pricesSteamflogger Boss wrote:Correct. A dimm board won't work without a GDROM drive attached.antron wrote:I recently acquired a cabinet with a Naomi 1 system. It plays Virtua athletics, which is supposed to be a GD rom game. Virtua Athlete is indeed a GD-ROM game. Your PCB is either a proto or a conversion. If you take a pic of it and make a thread of it on Arcade Projects, people there can help you identify it.

Re: Questions that do not deserve a thread
Ah I have no experience with those JVC monitors unfortunately, but had read of the issue here. That isn't too bad pre-modded, but still it is a fair bit of money like you say. I think it's worth having a PCE around, and have 2 (had 3 but traded one off recently) but it's something you will have to determine for yourself. If you move on from it, it's not too hard to get your money back or close enough. It would be much nicer if the prices were more like the other consoles of the era, but never gaining mainstream success outside of Japan really hurt that. I think it's the shmup system of the era, but that's certainly subjective. In addition to that there are lots of cool and quirky titles but your enjoyment with those outside of the platformers will depend on how much Japanese you know or how much you are willing to play games with translation guides. There are some really nice fan translations already with a couple sweet ones on the way though.werk91 wrote:The only thing I'm really worried about is if I get it switch it on and I'm looking at the infamous top screen bend that JVC monitors have with some consoles (JVC DT-V thread and few others mention it). Simple question... Using a scan conververter to display a 60Hz game in 75Hz, if there's no lag (in theory) is there any harm done?

You will probably have tearing and regular stuttering in anything that scrolls.LEGENOARYNINLIA wrote:Simple question... Using a scan conververter to display a 60Hz game in 75Hz, if there's no lag (in theory) is there any harm done?

Re: Questions that do not deserve a thread
why would you want to do that ? For anything that involves smooth scrolling that's totally out of the question.

Re: Questions that do not deserve a thread
No tearing or stuttering visible so far, everything looks smooth even with scrolling.
I'm trying out some features on this CP-251F for an interested buyer, and accidentally chose 75Hz which looks pretty solid on my plasma, so..

Active speakers for CRT TV?
I'm looking for a decent pair of active speakers for use with my CRT TV. Is it safe to place them on each side of the TV, about 10 cm from the chassis? Will the speaker magnets damage the TV?
Re: Questions that do not deserve a thread
Pretty much anything from 90s onwards will be shielded so yes you're fine. I have passive bookshelf Sony speakers from late 80s and even they're shielded. You won't find whether they are or not from a product description for any speakers you buy nowadays as it's a given they'll be shielded.
Re: Questions that do not deserve a thread
Nintendo 64 models with CPU-04 revisions and newer do not have C-Sync RGB.
Does Tim's universal N64 RGB Board allow you to output C-Sync RGB on ANY Nintendo 64?

Could somebody recommend me a good entry level joystick for PC that will work well for shmups? Xbox controller isn't bad but I wonder if I can do better?
Re: Questions that do not deserve a thread
Well yeah, in fact it even has both 75 ohm and TTL sync...GeneraLight wrote:Does Tim's universal N64 RGB Board allow you to output C-Sync RGB on ANY Nintendo 64?
Re: Questions that do not deserve a thread
Is there a device besides the gscart switch or the back of a PVM that properly splits an RGB SCART signal into two outputs? Usage example: dual monitors (one digital & one analog) or lag testing.

Re: Questions that do not deserve a thread
something like the madcatz wwe brawlstick. they can usually be bought for cheap, i think i got mine for £20-25 a couple of years ago. it's ok the way it comes but it is super easy to change out the buttons and stick for sanwa / seimitsu real arcade parts. you don't need to solder anything, just remove a couple of screws.Maran wrote:Could somebody recommend me a good entry level joystick for PC that will work well for shmups? or there is the mayflash arcade fighting stick for ps3/360/pc, sometimes refered to as the chinabusa. this has the bonus of not having the awful art.

scart switch from arcade otaku can do it, pretty sure there's quite a few others.Uzumaki wrote:Is there a device besides the gscart switch or the back of a PVM that properly splits an RGB SCART signal into two outputs? Usage example: dual monitors (one digital & one analog) or lag testing.

As I recall with the otaku scart switch someone said you can't use both outputs at the same time without a 50% loss of brightness.
PS1 Disc-Based Game ID BIOS patch for MemCard Pro and SD2PSX automatic VMC switching.
Re: Questions that do not deserve a thread
That was me! You can use it, it is 'usable'. I personally never would though, the drop in brightness is just too much to compensate effectively on the display's end. I can try it again over the weekend but I'm suspecting if I go and rank up brightness on the display there will be loss of colour saturation and would make the whole ordeal pointless.

Re: Questions that do not deserve a thread
It's a passive/unpowered switch right? There's nothing you can do then, those really aren't meant to be used as splitters.

Re: Questions that do not deserve a thread
Ok cool, but isn't that potentially dangerous to your equipment to drive two devices like that? I actually would only just do it for a minute to test lag. That wouldn't damage anything?

Re: Questions that do not deserve a thread
It is a passive one yes. I've no idea whether it's dangerous to the displays connected, would've thought not though. If you're just looking to use it for short amount of time to test lag then it'll be fine, brightness loss shouldn't matter for your tests.
