Gremlins. Haven't seen this since the 80's, still very good.

The Gremlins 2: The New Batch sequel really improves the special EFX animatronic puppet props indeed. How is it that a Gremlin can tell if it's midnight or not without looking at a clock or watch? Internal body time mechanism? The world may never know. Was at my local TRU and saw that they had some of the collectible Gremlins 2 figurines up for sale.

Hobbit (the first part). Magnificent. Literally the first movie I've seen where such animations left so little to be desired, but I particulary liked the fact Gollum was more fleshed out than I remembered him from the book (read before LotR).
It's one of the most revered kid's book of my childhood (on a par with Robert E. Howard's Conan stories), so you can imagine I wasn't the easiest audience to win over.

Not a movie, but we did the Idiot Abroad triple (with Warwick Davies) and I laughed my ass off for a solid three hours.

I read somewhere that while Ralph Macchio has aged quit well, he's as old now as Pat Morita was in the The Karate Kid. :-/

Last movie I watched was Wicked City. I had been in a sudden hunger for old super action Anime movies. It was okay.

Re: Movies you've just watched
I watched Gravity. I was pretty impressed in a lot of ways. Not a Bullock fan at all, but she did pretty good I think. Definitely the best thing she's done, I'll even say. I do think the movie could have held it's own with two much less known actors, but the money spent on the filming might have required big stars to pull people in. Either way, it was a great ride and I loved the way quite a few of the scenes were filmed. It captured entrapment, to say the least.

I went and saw Inside Llewyn Davis in theaters last weekend and it was fantastic. I'm a huge Coen Brothers fan, so I knew exactly what to expect and I wasn't disappointed. Typical Coen dry humor, but hilarious nontheless. My only complaint is that there might have been one too many full live songs that Llewyn performed.
In terms of Coen flicks, I'd rank it along my favorites - Raizing Arizona and Barton Fink.

Firestorm 3D
Andy Lau Hong Kong action. Meh, it was ok. Stupid like HK films usually are, but that's what I expected. Dodgy CG.
Personal Tailor
(Yes, I'm revelling in the fact Chinese movies have subtitles in the theatre!) A Lunar New Year movie by Xiaogang Feng, who usually does these things, with the Chinese Bill Murray guy (who's awesome.) A comedy of course, where a company personally tailors people's dreams by setting up a scenario where they're rich, powerful, etc etc. Funny, sweet, very well acted. Not the best thing ever, but certainly better than the HK formula above.
Olympus Has Fallen
Just came out here, even though it's a year old.
Complete piece of shit. Never before has cliche been so cliche, and painful patriotic propaganda been so blatant. Not entirely un-entertaining, but it's generic twaddle of a totally template nature and I don't recommend it unless you enjoy having your intelligence insulted.
And it was from Antoine Fuqua... Didn't he do Training Day? More like the Director Has Fallen.

The Act Of Killing. 4/5. This made me really sad, but in the end, it was worth it.

He sure has. He was on an episode of Psych a couple years ago and he looks just as he should! An older version of himself in The Karate Kid.GaijinPunch wrote:I read somewhere that while Ralph Macchio has aged quit well, he's as old now as Pat Morita was in the The Karate Kid. :-/
Last movie I watched was Tiger on Beat.
Sure it is an 80s HK action movie, but it had comedy that didn't feel forced and a decent cast including Gordon Liu(whom I had to go back and google since I couldn't for the life of me figure out which dude he was. He had hair!) and Chow Yun Fat as well. If looking for a nice action movie, this delivers quite nicely.

Oh! another movie I've recently watched was Adam Chaplin. That shit is like an Italian Hokuto No Ken lol.

Two Mules for Sister Sara (Netflix)
Saw this on Netflix 'random picks' and watched it immediately. Surprised I'd never heard of it - a real solid Clint Eastwood western. Not as good as his Leone days, but damn solid. The gimmick is great, and the chemistry b/w the leads is fantastic. Watch it if you even slightly like westerns.
Computer Chess (Netflix)
This is one of those movies with critical acclaim, but I can't really see the virtue, which makes me feel somewhat less intelligent. A sort of mockumentary on early '80s computer programmers. Specifically chess programmers. It has some interesting Cronenbergesque moments, but apart from that, I never really connected with any of the characters. To be honest, I found most of them pretty annoying. I guess the historo-cultural side of it is what I'm missing? Maybe it's because what I really wanted was to watch the chess games full-out (which makes me somewhat more intelligent, I figure).

Aw it wasn't that bad. The action was friggin' solid throughout. Yeah, the rest of the movie was rubbish - made either no sense, or the opposite of sense, but no worse than a bad Bond film.boagman wrote:Aw, shoot, really? I kind of wanted to rent that.Skykid wrote:Olympus Has Fallen

Got all excited about Computer Chess, been waiting to see hat one or per a year but I bet shitty UK Netflix doesn't have it
Is there some way to spoof Netflix so I could have access to the US (or preferably Canadian) version without fucking everything up?

Cheers GP. Found Hola, and it works great with my UK Netflix account. Ironically using it to watch raunchy British Sci Fi.
Re: Movies you've just watched
Hellraiser. Forgot how gut-wrenchingly nasty some of the practical effects on MONSTA FRANK are... marverous. One evil mood throughout this flick, entirely apart from the nutsack-shrinking tortures. Decidedly unpleasant every time.
Didn't know until after this last watch that the film was initially meant to be set in Lahndan like source story The Hellbound Heart, but those dickbrains at head office insisted it be overdubbed with lots of Murican accents for big box office buckaroonies. I recognised the bad teeth on that furniture lugger right off! Gives the movie a disorienting feeling for sure, not entirely unwelcome.
Oh Kirsty actress girl. I'd eat that ass like Jeffrey Dahmer. |3
Hyper obscurum: Found it funny how in the credits FRANK THE MONSTER is listed much like RICK THE MONSTER in Splatterhouse Part 3. I wonder if Namco were parroting that at all.
Glengarry Glen Ross. Like halapeeners on a fresh papercut every time.

Re: Movies you've just watched
I kid you not, when I downloaded the above two films my other horror pick was The Fly, and I went with Hellraiser because it's less of a downer.
They're both brutal (and 80s practical effect horror masterpieces), but HR is at least fantastical enough to keep at arm's length, where Cronenberg's movie is pure tragedy.

Nope! Planning to at some point though, especially with Peter Weller in it. Actually only just watched Videodrome a few weeks ago, before that having only seen The Fly and Scanners. I've been very tardy with his stuff despite my love for body horror.railslave wrote:Seen naked lunch by that nut job ?
