Been listening to a lot of Doujin albums as of late:

"The Elegy of the Battle" - Sword of Justice - Awesome metal album, besides Valis and Aleste arranges it has an arrange of stage 6 from Rayxanber II. Who else arranges awesome music like Rayxanber, nobody, how cool is that?

"Cadenza" - Magical Trick Society - Rockin' Phoneix Wright album.

"G5 Project" - Collaboration effort of the top doujin guitarists, amazing album.

"TYPE- R 2nd - SIDE CHRONO TRIGGER" - Right Stuff - Awesome Chrono album.

Saint Vitus - V
Sleep - Dopesmoker
Oh, SNAP!

Insomnium - Above the Weeping World

It's really good, really catchy, and grew on me really quick. I'd say it's overall better than The Day it All Came Down, but not as good as In the Halls of Awaiting. But then again I don't think they will surpass Halls, since they seem to be firmly seated in their current style, and the Halls sound/atmosphere was a bit different. All in all I'm enjoying it a lot.

What does this even mean? I think this is an album you should check out:

Theory in Practice - Colonizing the Sun -- It's technical metal and kind of reminds me of the guitar-oriented Castlevania stuff.

It even has an absolutely ridiculous cover of Sparks' "This Town Ain't Big Enough for the Both of Us." Almost tops Celestial Season's cover of "Vienna." I should really start compiling these.

What does doujin mean in reference to music? Isn't every musician some sort of music fan?

Anyways, a totally awesome forum member sent me a pack of CDs. Two are so good I can't possibly listen to anything else right now. In fact they're so good I was getting confused trying to get all my packages ready for the post office on Friday.

The Gories "Outta Here"
The Gories "I Know You Be Houserockin"

Jesus Christ. Why do I always miss the best bands while they're together? The Dirtbombs are cool enough but in no way do they approach the Gories.

I'm thinking he means they cover video game soundtracks. Is that right, Nemo? So I suppose it's like Japan's version of The Advantage, Minibosses, etc.

Yeah, here's some basic info for the interested: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dojin_Music

Some are bands with real instrumentation, and some are single artists with synthesizers. On the whole Japanese acts pretty much stomp on any Western counterpart, but that comes from the fact VGM is more much more popular in Japan. For those who like Hard Rock/Metal, check out these guys based on talent and track selection:

Sword of Justice - Does all the awesome music no one else arranges.

Woodsoft - Synth-based group of arrangers, very prolific and excellent, check out their ThunderForce album.

Mintjam - Don't do much in terms of selecting original tracks, but extremely professional. They have a Mushihimesama cover album.

Serenade - This 3-piece band is my favorite, mix blazing guitars with beautiful piano. So far they have only tackled Square music.

Decent instrumentation, but horrible vocals. I'll pass. :)

Yeah, the vocals are crap, but I thought you might not care since they're mostly buried. Let the record state that I don't like that band. 8)

I guess I'll post a few recent favorites:

Appalling Spawn - Freedom, Hope and Fury -- kinda lame band name, but high quality progressive-death metal from the Czech Republic
Morpheus Descends - Ritual of Infinity -- dirty old school death metal!
Growing - The Soul of the Rainbow and the Harmony of Light -- heavenly drone!

I guess, in order to raise my post count, and for something to do, I'll post my recent music listenings to.

Boysetsfire-- The Misery Index from the Plague Years. (Really good album. This band is mostly a hard rock band with political overtones, but with this album they included some more melodic stuff and even a song that borders on ska.)

Billy Talent-- Self-Titled and their followup album titled II.

Paul and Storm-- Opening Band (Very funny duo. Formerly of a vocal group/barbarshop quartet called Davinci's Notebook. Very funny stuff and very catchy. Check out their site for tons of free songs.)

Finger Eleven-- Self Titled and The Greyest of Blue Skies (Might be considered Nu Metal in some circles, but I think that genre name sounds derogatory.)

Iron Maiden-- Killers and Number of the Beast. (I'm a sucker for Maiden. Two of their best albums.)

after searching everywhere for a very long time I was able to find a copy of:

LFO: Advance

Amazing Warp LP from 96. Not a lot of fancy DSP software crazy-ness, like Autechre or Venetian Snares, just really tight programming with very beautiful synth sounds. The variation of the styles throughout the album is very impressive.

Mark Bell is a genius.

I've heard of them, apparently they'd perform occasionally at a place near me, I was recommended to go see them but never got around to it...

Never heard much of Davinci's Notebook, but they used to perform on the nationally syndicated Bob and Tom show a lot, and Paul and Storm kept up with that tradition. Like I said, check out their site:

www.paulandstorm.com

It's got a lot of material that they played on the Bob and Tom show so they released it on the world wide interweb for free.

Gorch Fock - Lying and Manipulating (These guys opened for Scratch Acid at the reunion show. Flippin' awesome.)
John Coltrane - Giant Steps
Reigning Sound - "I'll Cry"/"Your Love" 7"
V/A - Suspect Package (ancient D'N'B compilation on the Hardleaders label. I was feelin' nostalgic for the 90's, I guess.)
The Dictators - Bloodbrothers

but best of all:

Twisted Sister - You Can't Stop Rock and Roll

on 21 year-old vinyl I recently unearthed at my parents' house. More brilliant than I remembered! :D

"World" - N.EX.T
"Blue Blood" - X Japan
"Nostalgia" - GAIA - Some thrash cross hae-geum and piano.
"Second Life Syndrome" - Riverside - Best prog-metal band since old DT.

Andy C - Nightlife 3

After many many years I'm liking Andy C again. This is a very stylish mix, had it on at a party last week and the place was bouncin. It helped that all the drama queens left early due to fighting and a police visit, after that it was rockin

Just got the new Yo La Tengo album and so far it's a corker. Lots of distortion stuff and some nice melodiess. A bit more variety than i've come to expect from them which can only be a good thing.

Oh and The Fall. Everything by The Fall all the time.

Junior Boys - "So this is goodbye"

Chapterhouse "Whirlpool" U.K. reissue (with bonus tracks!)

Boris - "Pink" Im a bit late to the party when it comes to these guys but this rocks like nobody's buisness.

Last but not least would be the mighty "Blood Mountain" Mastadon's technical proficiency never ceases to amaze me. Just as good if not better than "Leviathan." Can't wait to catch their show next week. :D

ALBUM OF THE YEAR! I appreciate the lack of growling greatly. They should stop singing about whales, though.

^^^ nice to hear.

Meanwhile:
New Pornographers - Electric Version (nice change of pace for me)
Meshuggah - Nothing
Meshuggah - Chaossphere
Enjoying the Meshuggah, but (as I was warned) it's all starting to sound a bit the same.

I picked up Blood Mountain and it's pretty good. This is coming from a person who prefers old metal like Iron Maiden.

You may want to hear Ion Dissonance - Breathing is Irrelevant. Very Meshuggah and Dillinger Escape Plan inspired, but a little different with debatably more tolerable screaming.

Check out Wolf's new album, The Black Flame. It'll be out in a few weeks. Or any Wolf album. Very NWOBHM without sounding like a sad nostalgia act (i.e. Wolfmother). :)
