Yup, that's it. No Xbox for me, fuck you MS. Can't wait what happens in 10 years or so when they deactivate the servers for these games. Funny how later genenrations will still be able to play games from the 90s but not from the Xbox 1 because they can't activate the games anymore.Wired asked Microsoft if installation would be mandatory. “On the new Xbox, all game discs are installed to the HDD to play,” the company responded in an emailed statement. Sounds mandatory to us.
What follows naturally from this is that each disc would have to be tied to a unique Xbox Live account, else you could take a single disc and pass it between everyone you know and copy the game over and over. Since this is clearly not going to happen, each disc must then only install for a single owner.
Microsoft did say that if a disc was used with a second account, that owner would be given the option to pay a fee and install the game from the disc, which would then mean that the new account would also own the game and could play it without the disc.
But what if a second person simply wanted to put the disc in and play the game without installing – and without paying extra? In other words, what happens to our traditional concept of a “used game”? This is a question for which Microsoft did not yet have an answer, and is surely something that game buyers (as well as renters and lenders) will want to know.

Wait, I thought Microsoft had to rush the conference to be allowed to talk about the next Xbox to shoot down the stupid always online rumors... And they're confirming they're true?
I'll get a Xbox One when it is as cheap as my Xbox one was then. See, the naming is not confusing at all.

Re: Xbox 3 = Xbox 1: "this is rocket science stuff"
LOL at Microsoft. I had to check my calendar to make sure it isn't April 1st.
Re: Xbox 3 = Xbox 1: "this is rocket science stuff"
I rate it Xbox One out of 10.
Re: Xbox 3 = Xbox 1: "this is rocket science stuff"
So no Xbox 360 BC, and it sounds like no used games.
Re: Xbox 3 = Xbox 1: "this is rocket science stuff"
Eh, backwards compatibility would probably be crappy emulation anyway, I'm more than ok with it missing. I doubt the PS4 will have it either.
Nintendo only has it because their console design still involves duct-taping Gamecubes.

Re: Xbox 3 = Xbox 1: "this is rocket science stuff"
PS4 has no BC, so this could have been one advantage of Xbox One.

Snagged this gif off someone from Kotaku, which I think sums up this whole presentation pretty neatly:

Based =/= the same desktop "experience". Windows 8 is horrendous with traditional keyboard & mouse. As an OS for a games console it might not suck so hard.Friendly wrote:Welcome to PS4, then. Don't understand the love for Steam. It's just another annoying DRM method and it's only on my PC because I need it to play games. If I must suffer DRM, then I'd rather do it on a PC. But Windows 8 PC is nasty and Linux would likely be Steam only, plus likely a buggy client in its early days.
No DRM on Xbox One/PS4, then I'll probably be in.

PS4 statements have been way too vague.

Wait, so the Xbox with "1" in the title isn't the first console, it's the third....
And the Xbox with "3" in the title is the second console...
Also: Microsoft, we don't care about music, movies, cable tv, etc for our game console, we want GAMES! Good ones too! You could reduce the cost by not including all the junk we don't need or want and actually get more early adopters. Remember when the PS1 was released and became a run away success? it was because it had GREAT GAMES! That's all any gamer really cares about.

Re: Xbox 3 = Xbox 1: "this is rocket science stuff"
Don't think that's quite right. Sounded like discs are tied to an account, but can be activated on other accounts by paying an 'install' fee (or whatever you want to call it). But it also seems like there's a mandatory install after which the game disc is no longer needed. Seems to me like that would result in a flood of people trading in their game discs as soon as they've installed them. Depending on how steep the new 'install' fee is for secondary users, couldn't this lead to a massive spike in used game sales? Seems like a potentially odd situation at any rate.Friendly wrote:sounds like no used games.

I have no love for Steam, I just think it's great that formerly Windows-exclusive games are now coming to Linux.

So much for the cheering during the presentation:

Re: Xbox 3 = Xbox 1: "this is rocket science stuff"
Yup, no new consoles for me this generation. At least not till they're under $200. More money to spend on important things at least.

Well, with a bad economy, a non-game-centric console, and no backwards-compatibility, who exactly is going to buy this thing?
It's like that time when the Cd-i and 3DO and those other multi-media consoles came out, and tanked, because no one gave a shit about a game console that wasn't about games.
The people in charge of gaming, big shocker here, don't understand gaming at all.

When asked about why the importance of the PS4 reveal's first game being decidely cutesy game Knack, Yoshida said "Yeah, it was pretty intentional. Mark's idea was like, "What about a Crash Bandicoot for PS4?" When he suggested the concept of Knack, we were like, "Yeah, we hate to see all the PS4 games being FPS or action-adventure or very photorealistic" - you know, big-budget blockbuster games. We know that people like these games, but these are not the only kinds of games that people can have fun with."
Re: Xbox 3 = Xbox 1: "this is rocket science stuff"
Brilliant console name. In a world were consumers don't realize the Wii-U is a new console, lets name the console so it appears older than its predecessor.
Also, glad I got all my shopping done for a/v cables, controllers, etc that I want for the original Xbox. This is going to make buying accessories really fun in the future. How many auctions do you think we'll see just after the launch, for "Xbox 1" that are actually old Xboxes? Maybe we should rename it Ex-Box.

To me the worst part is that Xbox One blocks used games, and even if the game is yours you have to pay
to play on a second console. Unbelievable.
They destroy the concept of ownership.

Re: Xbox 3 = Xbox One: "This is rocket science stuff"
Just watched it but more than the end of this generation MS is leaving the path of the traditional games console, tries to grab the whole multimedia thing in one box full of features and is aiming for a much bigger audience .
Sony is walking the traditional path and presenting the PS4 foremost as a powerful gaming machine appealing to the hardcore gamer and believes there still a future for it .
It's going to be interesting times ahead .
If I have to choose now I would personally would go for the PS4 but I can see casuals/non gamers choosing the Xbox one ( burp sorry ) as an all in one multimedia wonder box that also delivers a great gaming experience very close to the PS4 .

Oh, by the way, they did NOT mention GDDR5! Sounds very much like PS4 will have much faster RAM.
