He was decent in The Prestige.. although sadly stage-stolen by none other than Sir David "Tesla" Bowie; he also did his part in the latest film attempt at Les Miserables.. (such agony)

Honestly, he needs to fire his agent (ditto Vin Diesel) and do some extreme lo-fi indie films to establish a modicum of cred.
Yes, he should!

But you can't damn the guy's acting ability based on his roles, lol. ;)
The films are dump, the roles are crap, the dialogue atrocious, but he did his best in all of them, and acted, at least. And while I love to see Bowie back on the screen, his performance in The Prestige is pretty awful. Not his fault though, blame Nolan.

I heard Jackman does a broadway show. Maybe he does the crappy action movies to pay the bills and stage acting for the sake of art?

Yes, Jackman is a revelation in The Fountain.

I heard someone muse once that Dennis Quaid only does craptacular movies nowadays to guarantee he's always the best thing in them.

Finally watched Westworld for the first time. It was strangely enjoyable considering it always felt like it was struggling to be half decent. It was as if it did something quite special without explicitly demonstrating that it was a critically good film.

I also saw Unthinkable. For a fairly mainstream, straight down the middle action/thriller, it managed to be quite provocative in terms of making the viewer contemplate the role/morals of torture (albeit in a rather simplistic way, but that's no bad role for a mainstream movie tackling a human rights issue. Nothing too special, but worth watching (though the torture scenes are not for the squeamish). I also enjoyed the subtle placement of Amnesty International logos (flyers on a inboard, for example). Not sure what they were actually saying with them...

I loved it, but it definitely had a hint of B-movie charm going on as part of it's appeal. I wasn't aware that would be part of it's vibe, is all. I'd imagined a more stern sci-fi work, but it was certainly even a little silly or playful at times. It's not that I thought it was any less than ace; it was just good in a way different from how I'd imagined.

Much like you Skykid. B-movie charm.

Well shit a brick. It's very, very rare I find myself surprised by such things, but Hunger Games 2 actually caught fire.

^cant just leave it at that. What made it better than the first one? (Apart from the lack of silly monsters). I enjoyed both movies.

Sure thing.

The first is like a 6. Not the worst score ever, but too much weakness from a directorial and narrative standpoint. There was no bite to it, it all felt too PG-13, and the allegorical message was hazy at best. I actually did a run down of it a few posts ago, since I only watched it the other night, but generally the games themselves were far too flimsy and its themes weren't properly defined. A lot of it felt a bit silly and off the beat, too.

Catching Fire, well, everything the first film should have been essentially. The dread is deeper, the allegorical rich and poor theme much stronger, and the fascist nature of the state far better defined. The build up didn't rush it, instead taking its time to let the themes breathe. It also helped they fired the original cinematographer and found someone who can hold a camera still.

I'm still not too into the whole baroque wardrobe thing, but I appreciate it outlines the disgusting and ignorant natures of the wealthy, bloodthirsty oppressors.

Key factors: Donald Sutherland, Donald Sutherland, Donald Sutherland. I like Kiefer, but his old man still puts the kid to absolute shame when it comes to the trade. Sutherland's performance added so much to the sinister, it can't be overstated. Without him, it's doubtful the film would have managed to evoke the same feel. The fact he was so much more established here speaks volumes about his reduced role in the original.

From a commercial perspective, the general pace was tight, the narrative focussed, the fat cut away. No masterwork of dialogue, but adequate, and as per the original, the lack of music was welcome.

More importantly, the games themselves were actually entertaining. Some people actually died, and although they spent too much time killing wild baboons instead of humans, there was more invention, violence and tension in the overall affair. And even though the ending was ridiculous, since the secret collaborators would never have forseen or been able to prepare for it, I can give it a pass because it was fucking cool - and that counts for something in my book.

Sadly, I have a terrible feeling this will be by far the best of the entire saga. I hope to eat my words.

The Fountain is good, though a bit far out there. I'd consider it a love or hate movie in the same kinda way Cloud Atlas is.
The Fountain is too good (honestly my favorite film) and Jackman is incredible in it whether you like the film or not.

In the middle or re-watching some hollywoodian sword-and-sandals / peplum classic movies I had not seen in over 20 years.

Ben-Hur
The Ten Commandments
Jason and the Argonauts
Spartacus

Next: Cleopatra

Well... by today's standards they're all kind of... lame.
Ben-Hur and Spartacus aged relatively well, otherwise it's crappy dialogs, bad play, ridiculous blissful dumb religious shit.

Loved the galley scene in Ben Hur and retro visual effects in the 10 C and Jason though.

Yeah I'm bored.

A tragedy: the only youtube-upload of Ninja Dragon is pan-n-scan VHS. Other clips on youtube seem to be from better-quality pictures. Let's hope someone with vision and foresight corrects this grave error.

It's still a decently entertaining Godfrey Ho movie, coupled with the motherfuckin' KAMUI NO KEN soundtrack. And John Carpenter's The Thing theme playing over the most intense shitty card game ever, ha.

It also has one of the more FABULOUS posters I've seen in a while.

Basically my feelings exactly. There are just a few other films I put in the same category. That stick is AMAZING!!

Why so pessimistic? Good review btw, the ending was indeed an OH SNAP! moment. A little abrupt, but it didn't matter because there are 2 more movies to see how it unfolds.
I'm glad you liked it.

Ugh. Too many good ones to consider from this month alone.

Would much rather discuss Best New Starlet tbh.

Hell yeah! My favorite Peckinpah film.
Perhaps the best war movie I've ever seen, and plenty of excellent, memorable characters. That German officer was a geniune prick of a character.

I can't watch a Godfrey Ho ninja flick without falling asleep. I'd much rather have a movie with just the goofy caucasian ninjas doing goofy ninja shit and none of the flimsy HK z-grade gangster schlock filler.

While the ninja reels are definitely the highlights of the films, and you definitely aren't wrong to point out how many of them just plain suck (see: the CATMAN movies), sometimes some of the Asian subplots rise above the rest and are entertaining and -dare I say- compelling in their own right.

If you haven't watched them, Ninja Terminator and Full Metal Ninja (full movies in links) are very good about this - their padding plots are high energy and move along briskly, especially Terminator's inane antics of Jaguar Wong walloping the living shit out of everyone he comes across, whether it's hillbilly jewelers, rapist thugs, men who give directions, and the most ridiculous looking badguy of any of these HK z-flicks:
Image

Ninja Terminator is probably the best Godfrey Ho film in terms of enjoyment, so that's the one to get friends together and watch.

Stay away from Come and See? Don't! It's phenomenal! Easily one of the bleakest war movies ever made, which may be good reason to stay away from it, I suppose. ;)

Thirst
Somi
Shiri
The Host
Pulgasari

You've got vampires, martial arts, terrorism, and two very different giant monster flicks there. Also 40% North Korean, for shits and giggles.

Wow. And here I was thinking;

1) Oldboy - Park Chan-wook
2) Memories of Murder - Bong Joon-ho
3) Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter... and Spring - Kim Ki-duk
4) Castaway on the Moon - Lee Hae-jun
5) Oasis - Lee Chang-dong

None of those you mentioned was on my radar. Also, was thinking just purely South Korean cinema.

Has nobody Seen The City of Violence.
That also happens to be the last movie I watched. I've seen it many times, but it is one of those oddball revenge flicks where it pretty much spirals downward into we don't care if we die, we must find the killer. Nice use of colors and the story is pretty good as well. Still nothing beats that huge mob fight scene.
