Sony DVP-S7700
this was my first higher-end DVD player - maybe around 12 years ago. Gorgeous machine for CDs and DVDs. Later on replaced by the DVP-S999ES in my setup - the most stellar CD/DVD player Sony ever built.

Geometry is pretty good (it does have a slight curve to it though), paintjob on the monitor surround is very bad. Nice for playing DFK on, very good picture overall. I've converted it to JAMMA with a FrancoB loom.

You're not wrong, I thought I'd give a good one a try again. Stuff this has that most don't:
1) Fully wired loom
2) It came into the house fairly easily with the cp and monitor removed, still huge though
3) Horizontal board bay (matters more than you think)
4) Speakers with bins and a decent amount of air behind them

Bad stuff:
1) Sanwa sticks (not their worst ones thankfully)
2) No -5v
3) Monitor rotation is not something youd do often, it takes ages.

I love it man. My NAD recently took a dive on me so I needed a cheap replacement. the 999 is awesome but out of my range for a quick/cheap replacement. They made such beautiful components.

Radica Phoenix Revolution, a customizable PS2 controller: you can rearrange all the face buttons freely. Cost me about $25 (shipping included).

Not responsive enough, Seimitsu are better in that dept by miles.

Strange, I have a Sanwa and I find it fine, and it's the main choice for the fighting game community too (though Third Strike and Super Turbo Japanese cabs use Seimitsu). I guess it's not that good for STGs then? Personally I find Seimitsu buttons to be less responsive than Sanwa, but I don't have much experience with their sticks.

considering <1% of my 1k+ cd's are SACD and even if I wanted to purchase SACD there are few out there.
with it's pillar construction, it's one of the finest transports made. period.

my experience w/ sanwa = a gentle breeze = button registered. extremely responsive. using seimitsu in all sticks atm, but all had sanwa's originally and I never had a problem.

I'll second this. I really prefer the much firmer PS-14-G buttons for shmupping.

So far I've only use the GN-type buttons (screw in). I understand the G-type snap-ins, because they're much shorter have a shorter engage distance, which I'm curious to try. Now that I finally have a stick with a metal panel I could use them in, I really need to get a set ...

Glad to hear you're giving candies another shot. Although I am somewhat dismissive of most of your complaints (seems like most of them could apply to owning a machine in general), I'm with you on the speaker issue. I'd be interested to know how the speakers sound on the Naomi Universal cabs. I ended up replacing the speakers in my Astro and Aero City cabs because I couldn't stand the sound of them.

I also agree about the Seimitsu sticks; much better in my opinion. I do use the Sanwa buttons, which don't take much pressure to activate, but I'm not much of a button slapper, so that's fine by me.

The JLF is a much nicer product than the Seimitsu sticks. Especially the LS-32 has the very annoying wiggle-room when centered. The best non-modded joysticks for shmupping is the LS-56/LS-58's, but they can't compare to the build quality of a JLF, sadly. I'm curious to try the JLW, as they apparently have the shortest travel/engage of any Japanese joystick.

The weird jumping/popping thing on the LS-32 bugs me too.

It depends on play style though -- I think I realized last night that even when playing shmups I am very agressive with stick movements. Probably comes from growing up playing fightans and neo geo with Happ controls (and having huge manly arms lol)

Well, having used it a bit now - the speakers aren't great, they're still nothing like as good as the cheap 10w ovals sound in my wood cabs. On the other hand they're not hideously tinny and over trebled, so it's a more tolerable form of crappy. There's a reason speakers are still made in wooden enclosures.

Would be playing it more but lack of a safely usable stool (all I have is a rickety one that falls apart a bit between each credit) is getting in the way.

4) Most power converted candy's you find in North America are not properly grounded to Earth Ground (the third prong in the outlet connector). Not sure about ones in Japan or in Europe though...

JLW's are a pretty good all-round stick IMO. If you wanted a general stick for a multitude of games, I think this is the best stick, construction and feel wise. Great for classics, brawlers, good for shmups, but just ok for fighters. My only beef with them is the throw is slightly heavier, so after a while you feel it in your muscles. :)

Bought myself an xmas gift, Tony Taka f/c hardback artbook. No explicit nudity, but close to the wire. T2 doesn't qualify as family oriented. Lots of Shining series art - this guy's too good. Wonder what would happen if he ever attempted to draw men (as opposed to lots of balls and shaft close ups.)

Say it ain't so Skykid! Are you getting "Elixir-ized"?

Going to need an intervention once you start getting scantily clad, pubescent girl statues.
