Crank 2 is an American masterpiece and Statham's comedic performance is stunning. If Keanu Reeves is an "average" actor, Statham is at least in the 75th percentile.Skykid wrote:The only person (won't use the word actor) I refuse to watch is Jason Statham, and it's saved me hours of watching tragic performances in shit films.
Two working class dudes, one black one white, just baked a tray of ten cookies together.
An oligarch walks in and grabs nine cookies for himself.
Then he says to the white dude "Watch out for that black dude, he wants a piece of your cookie!"

Re: Movies you've just watched
Crank 2 is pretty awesome slack jawed entertainment. Find it impossible to analyse it without shrugging and walking off.
Re: Movies you've just watched
I'm not ashamed to admit I enjoy Jason Statham movies, even though they are a dime a dozen and generally involve him playing the same robin hood type 'good' bad guy. They're good for what they are. I certainly don't go into them expecting anything profound or thought provoking.
Re: Movies you've just watched
Films with Statham as the lead that I've enjoyed and would choose to watch again vastly outnumber those that I would avoid. Highbrow actor? Hardly. Entertaining action star? Definitely.

Re: Movies you've just watched
I enjoyed the Transporter films (probably mostly because of the Luc Besson involvement) more than the other stuff I've seen with Statham. The Crank movies, I kinda hated.

Re: Movies you've just watched
'Crank' meant something very different to me (nothing drug related) before those films came along. They could never meet my expectation.
Re: Movies you've just watched
Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels is too good and Revolver was great. But that goes for almost every Guy Ritchie film with a possible exception of Rock-n-Rolla (which I personally enjoyed but I know others did not).GaijinPunch wrote:Snatch? UHF.
Yup, the last movie I watched was that because I could get to sleep the other night, and then I was very tired out after that I guess because of all the laughter.

UHF is one of my all time favorites. Nearly every line in the movie is quote worthy... it's that good.
I just watched The Intouchables. "Based on a true story. After he becomes a quadriplegic from a paragliding accident, an aristocrat hires a young man from the projects to be his caretaker.." Was brilliant! If you aren't moved a bit by this story then you are a pretty shitty human. An easy 4 1/2 STARS. It's on netflix, check it out.

Not for me. He doesn't hit entertaining because I can't get past how ghastly a non-actor he is coupled with his complete lack of charisma. Every time I see him, I just think bloke in a fishmonger/butcher/chip shop - which lets face it, is exactly where he'd be (and probably belong) if he hadn't sold his soul to the devil.cools wrote:Films with Statham as the lead that I've enjoyed and would choose to watch again vastly outnumber those that I would avoid. I really like Drive but hadn't heard there was a followup.. I have to check it out on principal. Will report in shortly with a verdict.

Point Break defined my 20s in a lot of ways. Almost impossible to overstate my love for it then... I remember how my friends and I challenged ourselves on a vacation then to speak only in Point Break quotes for the entire weekend, and we very nearly managed it. I still celebrate Bodhi day on December 8th in honor of "a modern savage, a real searcher."
Also unabashedly love Demolition Man, the quintessential 90s one-liner movie for me (I know there's a lot to choose from there). So dumb, so fun.
Let's see, I've been through a lot lately, too much for long reviews:
Holy Grail, Life of Brian, Meaning of Life: definitely thought Meaning of Life was best. My first time seeing them, as I've never been a huge fan of Monty Python (slowly changing).
The War Room: Interesting time capsule into the 92 Clinton presidential race. A documentary without an "agenda" per se, though in omission things are obscured, and unwarranted conclusions can be drawn from purportedly objective presentations. The relationship between Carville and his wife is mystifying.
Bubblegum Crisis OVA: Not finished, as I've been kind of put off by the change in style--animation, music, presentation--in episode 5. Loved the first 4, though they could have done with less repetitive stories. Like Gunbuster, feels like a promise unfulfilled, compensated with style though. Going to finish it this week.
Edge of Darkness: British BBC noir-ish political thriller. On the third episode, a little melodramatic so far but still good. Recommended if you like slow, talky, natural.

Yeah, I meant followup in the broadest possible sense. It features stylized ultraviolence and stars Ryan Gosling. That's about it.

This music video. I don't think neo-expressionism was terribly fashionable in 2001, so there.
P.S. Hercules and the Amazon Women - pre-Xena Lucy Lawless appears here, as well as possibly the actress who played on of the hooker's role in Fargo (not sure about the latter).
