Re: Questions that do not deserve a thread
On a Sony BVM (I have a D20F1U), is there a way to save Alignment settings (H Phase, V Center, H Size, V Size), and recall them at will (and go back to other settings you saved in another save slot or whatnot)?
The different Channels save things like signal type, which card slot to use, sync mode, etc, so I'm wondering if there's a method of saving Alignment settings as well (as the alignment settings seem to affect every channel).
I know Overscan acts as a second memory slot of sorts, but I actually use that feature and don't want to mess those settings up.
...otherwise I'm seriously looking at getting a Extron VSC 700 - that would let me easily shrink/enlarge the image, and center the image by a simple twist of a dial, correct? (WAY less button presses than the BVM's built in menu system I think).

Re: Questions that do not deserve a thread
I've been using this card with amarec for about 3 years, and yeah, 3.10 is the most stable. First time I've had any issues really (except for nitpicks). I'm using an OSSC, so the latest drivers (1.1.0.168) work perfectly fine. No need for RGB via d-sub anymore. The two latest drivers are the only ones that allow you to increase the HDMI/DVI bandwidth, which is a really nice feature.FinalBaton wrote:Do you have amarec 3.10? I had problems with earlier versions. I say definitely pick up 3.10
Also there are some people who recommend a particular driver for the Micomsoft capture card. Can't remember which it is. I had no problem with the one that came stock with my Startech USB3HDCAP (same as X-Capture 1 without the RGB passthrough), but YMMV.
What version of the card driver do you have?
Anyway, performing a system restore actually solved the issue. The only affected software was Chrome, which I don't use. I tried updating Chrome again, and the same issue arose. Seems very odd that a browser update would affect the card this way. I can't make sense of it.

PVM 2950QM: where do I adjust the V HOLD? There are no knobs on the back like 2130QM and OSD doesn't have the option available. Anyone know where exactly on the pcb this is located?
Re: Questions that do not deserve a thread
Just curious, are you feeding the monitor a csync signal?Magicalbottle wrote:PVM 2950QM: where do I adjust the V HOLD? There are no knobs on the back like 2130QM and OSD doesn't have the option available. Anyone know where exactly on the pcb this is located?

Still waiting for the BNC breakout cable with sync stripper. The OSD menu is rolling though.
Re: Questions that do not deserve a thread
Okay, an update regarding the capture card issue. It works like normal after a system restore, but stops working everytime I restart my computer. No changes made, just a normal reboot. Why is this happening? I'd rather not restore my system everytime I want to record something. =(
Re: Questions that do not deserve a thread
Anyone ever daisy chain two HAMA 100S scart switches together, and where can I find a short (1-2 ft) SCART cable of reasonable quality?
Re: Questions that do not deserve a thread
Can you play N64DD games on an N64 using an Everdrive?

Yes you can, they just need to be the correct format for the Everdrive.

PVM: when I turn the brightness to almost max, there is a horizontal 2cm black border along the menu text stretching all the way to the right. You can't see it normally though, what exactly is this? Burn in?
also have dark spots at bottom and top left corners of the screen, degauss doesn't fix this. any solutions for this?

Re: Questions that do not deserve a thread
Any suggestions on where to buy a SNES 1CHIP-02 model (full-size non-mini)? Any recommended retro gaming stores? Plenty of 01's on eBay but no 02's (think there's a 03 which would need a mod for RGB, but I'm not paying like $190 for it!, plus I don't want to have to mod it).
And are you guys using the three 750 Ohm resistors to reduce brightness? (that mod I can do myself, but don't want to get into modding the 03 for proper sync output, plus all the screenshots I don't see a difference between 02 and 03 but do see lesser image quality from the 1CHIP-01).

Re: Questions that do not deserve a thread
Does anyone know if its possible to mod Sony PVM 20N5E or 14N5E for RGB (Both models I've found I only feature Composite and S-Video)?
If yes how easy/hard it would be for someone with soldering skills at entry level? Thanks.

Anyone know how I can adjust the screen size/overscan on a Sony PVM-14M2U? Left and right is perfect but top and bottom have some fairly serious cut off.
Thanks in advance!

Can the Wii U output 240p? I am looking into modding mine, and the big advantage of the Wii is the 240p emulation. Is this possible on the U?

Service/Maintenance manual is on this page, you want to look for how to enter the 'hidden' service menu, then look for the h/v size/centering/phase options on the chart and adjust accordingly:MoboMogami wrote:Anyone know how I can adjust the screen size/overscan on a Sony PVM-14M2U? No it cannot. Same deal with the PS3.chuckster wrote:Can the Wii U output 240p? I am looking into modding mine, and the big advantage of the Wii is the 240p emulation. Is this possible on the U?
Wii and PS2 could both output 240p. Wii U and PS3 cannot output 240p, and scales games that used it to 480i/480p/etc.

Re: Questions that do not deserve a thread
PS3 also has a tendency to be inaccurate with the scaling, so running any kind of SLG may not work. We have a HDMI to VGA thread for a small list of adapters in regards to getting games on analog sources and I'm thinking we should have someone start compiling a small database on ported games (or compatable) for the VGA+SLG combination. Maybe later someone can actually do an SLG for digital sources?
I made mention of that VGA to scart cable in the ossc thread, so I need a small list of reputable sources which I can either order from or have one made specifically for this device. I'll be looking forward to sources aside from Dreamcast to be hooking up, possibly a Raspberry Pi with 15khz later on.

Is there any advantage to having an SFC instead of modding a SNES cart slot? Afaik it's just an aesthetic thing, which I completely understand.
Re: Questions that do not deserve a thread
It's really down to aesthetics, the SNES and Super Famicom are exactly the same internally (give or take the different AC adapters and RF output).Einzelherz wrote:Is there any advantage to having an SFC instead of modding a SNES cart slot? Re: Questions that do not deserve a thread
Recently I've been dabbling around with the backwards compatible Xbox 360 games on the Xbox One S, and compared the outputs of an original Xbox 360 to see how they line up on my Samsung 4K TV. From what I can see the X1S, when set to output 2160p, employ a really ugly sharpening filter. An example taken with my phone to illustrate (Mass Effect 3 which is a 720p game):
720p (orginal Xbox set to 720p)

2160p (X1S set to 4k)

To my eyes at least it seems that using the original Xbox 360 (or setting the X1S to 720p output) and thus using the inbuilt internal TV scaler from 720p -> 2160p is far superior to using the scaling found within the X1S. I am a little surprised to see how bad it is, especially considering all the good press Microsoft has gotten from their backwards compatibility program. Anyone else here noticed this?

Re: Questions that do not deserve a thread
Why not set the X1S output to 720p or 1080p? The hardware doesn't support 4K gaming, the only thing it can actually display at 4K is videos.
Re: Questions that do not deserve a thread
I heard GameBoy and GameBoy Color games display incorrectly on a GBA, GBA SP, DS and DS Lite. Is that true?
Re: Questions that do not deserve a thread
Not in any way that matters. First off, the DS and DS Lite do not support Game Boy or Game Boy Color games, they only support Game Boy Advance games.
There may be minor differences as you might expect to see between different hardware revisions (such as how even the 1chip SNES doesn't behave exactly the same in some games). It's got a set of what is essentially GBC hardware in there and displays at the same refresh rate. The pixel aspect ratio is slightly different, but the difference is hard to notice in practice (11/10 vs 1/1, I believe).
One note, however, is that some GBC games may intentionally behave differently on the GBA. Basically, there is a model code put into the CPU registers on boot which games can use to determine what they're running on, and some games will change their colour palette or add additional features on the GBA. One example of this is the Capcom GBC Zelda games, which use a brighter palette on the GBA to make up for the original GBA's less reflective screen.
It's worth noting that GBI allows you to correct for the pixel aspect ratio difference, with some side effects. By default, it scales GB/GBC games by 1.1 on the horizontal axis to correct for it. This has the result of some scaling shimmer (from the non-integer scale), but it's mitigated by the fact that the gamecube's framebuffer is 640 pixels wide regardless of if you're doing 240p or 480p, so in 240p mode. This means that instead of a 1.1x scale resulting in every 10th pixel being 2x the width, it means that every 10th pixel is only 1.5x the width. Personally, I just disable that scaling, because the difference in aspect ratio is even less noticeable to me, so I would prefer to just use the pixel-perfect mode of a 1.0x pixel aspect ratio.
Here is a comparison between a GBC game on a GBA SP and a GBC game on a GBC. The frontlight on the GBA SP is on to get a similar brightness since the GBA SP is less reflective.

They're both square.Guspaz wrote:The pixel aspect ratio is slightly different, but the difference is hard to notice in practice (11/10 vs 1/1, I believe).

Re: Questions that do not deserve a thread
Huh, must just be the size difference tricking me into thinking the aspect ratio was slightly different.
Re: Questions that do not deserve a thread
I knew that. I meant how are GameBoy Advance games treated on the DS, DS Lite, DSi (inject; no GBA slot), DSi XL (inject; no GBA slot), 3DS (inject; no GBA slot), 3DS XL (inject; no GBA slot), 2DS (inject; no GBA slot), New 3DS (inject; no GBA slot) and the New 3DS XL (inject; no GBA slot).Guspaz wrote:Not in any way that matters. Source on this? I find that hard to believe. The GameBoy Color and GameBoy Advance both have unlit screens.Guspaz wrote:the Capcom GBC Zelda games, which use a brighter palette on the GBA to make up for the original GBA's less reflective screen.

The colors are slightly different. That's about it. The interlaced refresh may be more noticeable than before.GeneraLight wrote:So there's no difference in image quality when playing GameBoy and GameBoy Color games on a GameBoy Advance?

Because the screen has different physical properties.GeneraLight wrote:Why are the colors different?
Up to you.GeneraLight wrote:Is it perceivable?
The Game Boy line used it as a cheap way to improve response times. It also saves power.GeneraLight wrote:Interlaced refresh?
Re: Questions that do not deserve a thread
The GBC screen was significantly more reflective than the GBA screen. Images appeared darker. It's not hard to experience it for yourself in an emulator by switching the system type back and forth, or even on real hardware by using the original cart versus a ROM modified to not change the palette. Side by side comparisons:GeneraLight wrote:Source on this? I find that hard to believe. The GameBoy Color and GameBoy Advance both have unlit screens.
This is one comparison:

They also add an extra shop to the game on the GBA (IIRC called the "advance shop").
From the same thread I stole the above images, observe the difference changing a single byte:
