I just realized that the new Smash Bros. has two different modes for online multiplayer. One is called "For Fun", which I guess has items on and stage hazards and whatnot, and the other is "For Glory", which has items off and simplified stages. I dunno, I don't know a lot about Smash. What annoys me is the title of these two modes, because they're perpetuating the absolutely moronic idea that the people who just like to play games casually are the ones having fun, and that everybody else is playing for... some unknown reason. You see that type of nonsense on message boards fairly often, where people post about how they're just playing something for fun - implying that people who take the game more seriously than them aren't having fun (they're actually having more fun). It's disappointing to see that start creeping into games, especially a fairly high profile one.

Wouldn't be surprised if at least some of the competitive players give Big N hell over it, though. Sounds like they should. (But I'm also in the "doesn't know anything about Smash except it's bad for controllers" camp.)

I don't think it's something to make a big deal out of, it's just the title of the two modes that annoys me. If they would have named them differently it wouldn't bother me at all. Take Halo, for example. Each game has a bunch of different playlists; the casual ones are called "Social Slayer" or "Social Objective", while the competitive playlists that use tournament settings are called "Team Hardcore" or "MLG". There's no silly divide between people who are playing 'for fun' and everybody else.

That moment you get a nasty internet disabling virus. It's gone now (or dormant maybe?) , but it was a troubleshooting hell. I think running Malwarebytes in safe mode is what did the trick.

That is of course a bogus accusation. Could have been worse: Imagine a program that encrypts all your files with a key generated in real time at the moment of deployment, and will leave them so forever unless you pay the ransom within the specified period. Removing the program does nothing, and the key is not stored anywhere in its files.

The elitism and e-peen stroking is noxious though I do only notice it in the Shmup chat section. A metric fuck load of people with no authority on anything in life howling "stop liking what I don't like" at the top of their Internet lungs.

Any idiot who claims competitive players of anything aren't having fun need their head examined.
You're free to like what you want, and play how you wish but no one decides what's fun for anyone else. Casual, competitive, or an outsider in general looking in. There's actually a change.org petition made by some clown who wants For Glory REMOVED from Smash Wii U (as if they'll do that when the game is released NEXT month).

If someone likes the mayhem of items tossing players in every which fashion having an explosive romp with 3 other players, Cool.
If someone likes understanding matchups, learning the in depth mechanics, and having fierce 1v1 duels with someone to get better, to WIN, Cool. Neither mode interferes with any aspect of Smash. I don't see the issue with people playing a little harder than normal.

Well it's full of young nerds and middle-aged men here after all, what did you expect ?
Too bad you only see that aspect, maybe if you spent more time reading you'd realize it's one of those places where people share fuckloads of very useful information and deep knowledge, and if you have a real interest in the actual things (e.g. video games, techniques, hardware, emulation, more etc) you'll be able to get over the usual bored ass/jerk/frustrated/e-penis posts and see the gold.
There are other good communities with more or less specialized topics and crowds, and several more 'gentle', right, but in my eyes the shmups forums gather an impressive number of people with demon-level knowledge relevant to what I like, and this is what I want.
To be honest I thought like you in the beginning, then I realized it's nothing and after all I can be an ass too sometimes. Who cares as long as we get to the right stuff in the end ?

I was at Play Expo yesterday: a gaming event with a huge amount of arcade cabs set to freeplay.

I really wanted to get on Progear and try and 1cc it, bit of showboating perhaps. However two dickheads had just sat down to play and were like "wow! this is ridiculous!" credit after credit went in, continuing every few seconds. It got to the point where they would respawn, bomb three times in quick succession, die and repeat. This isn't elitism on my part: why were they even still playing at this point? They weren't even dodging bullets anymore, just bombing away, that can't have been fun.
I twiddled my thumbs and had a credit of some godawful 80's platformer while they bombed and credfed the whole game before getting up and waddling off without so much as a word. God damn.

I guess I should've told them to move.

This forum is awesome. People know their shit about video games old and new, and everything about the culture around them.

There is some sort of self selected sample created by being a really international forum comprised of people that love pure gameplay / a niche hardcore genre. Yes, it is super nerdy, but in generally the best and most self aware ways.

We tend to cut through the bullshit here, unlike a lot of other video game forums.

Obviously there are some ego trippers/ idiots etc, but the off topic forum itself has been an amazing resource for me. And I find the opinions here to be better on things nothing to do with shmups, and often concerned niches that have their own dedicated communities (that are usually watered down, completionist collecting, high-fiving, mutual enablers)

EDIT: forgot to mention that the hardware forum on here is pretty much the best in the business from what I've discovered
