Dynasty Warriors 8 - this could have been the best in the series if it wasn't for the constant frame drops. I did get 60fps at one point, in a simple corridor facing the wall. Aside from this one hideous lamentable issue which is not adequately reported in the press, the maps are the best ever, the fighting system has been subtly tweaked, the new story structure makes the overall story a lot more comprehensible, and a few of the main characters have now been shown in a slightly more accurate light historically. Cao Cao is no longer painted as nothing but a power hungry villain for example.

Finally tried out my PAL region copy of Dirt 3. Gorgeous looking game, but overly stylized menu's, and it's integration with my Logitech G25 blows.
Fun nonetheless, and the sense of speed is great.

Mark eckos "getting up" on the o.g. xbox.
This realy needs some kind of a next gen reboot, its got alot of potential,

Im sort of shocked there was nothing this "assassins creed generation"
This game has it all, in a very bugged form ..

Rise of the Triad [PC, 2013]
Got it from GOG today for $15 on preorder. This succeeds where Duke Nukem Forever failed. It still feels like ROTT, only with Unreal Engine 3 graphics and new level design. Probably all the weapons have made it in, though I'm hoping to find the Excalibat sooner or later.
Like the original ROTT, the linearity that plagues most $60 FPS (*cough* the typical Call of Duty and Battlefield 3 campaign) is thankfully gone. I can see this having good replay value (better level completion percentages and scores).

Played some Dissidia Final Fantasy just now. I forgot what a steaming pile of shit it was, and also how unfun the AI is to play against. Time for this one to go back to collecting dust on my shelf.

Also whoops, I forgot this was coming out this week...heh, I'll have to go grab a copy. Hope they have it in stores, otherwise GoG is the way I'll go.

I like how ROTT 2013 has a completely useless reload button.

Re: What [not shmup] game are you playing now?
I went to GameStop (their shitty new location which is scarcely larger than the old one, and less convenient since it's in the middle of a twisty warren of roads) and looked at their PC games section...and that's the joke! It wasn't even facing the front of the store, but on the back side of a shelf with some Diablo stuff on the other side. I guess Rise of the Triad wasn't in the cards anyway.
Guess I'll be going with Good Old Games via PayPal then!
Minor update: On purchasing the game, it flashed the Blake Stone and other preorder stuff at my window, but I can't see it now. That's kind of shitty to do.

Don't really care about story. It's all about blasting the enemies to LUDICROUS GIBS and racking up high scores by finding those items.Mischief Maker wrote:I like how ROTT 2013 has a completely useless reload button.

Never had a problem playing it back in the day with regular saves. It'd be refreshing to play it straight through without saving, like games are supposed to be played.

Whelp, ROTT 2013 was fun up until the instadeath jump puzzles. Some parts of classic FPS gaming deserved to die.

I revisited The Suffering last night and found the premise (social commentary underneath the exploitative surface) as fresh as back in the day. Now I wonder how people of America, where attitude towards convicts doesn't seem particulary kind, perceived this tale.

RotT 2013 is pissing me off something fierce with collision problems (i.e. hanging up on a wall when knifing) and slowdown in God mode. You can tell it's a budget title.

They've said there is a massive optimization patch in the works. Bad news? It'll be a month+ coming since they want to release it with the level editor.Ed Oscuro wrote:RotT 2013 is pissing me off something fierce with collision problems (i.e. hanging up on a wall when knifing) and slowdown in God mode. Re: What [not shmup] game are you playing now?
The real problem with ROTT 2013 is that in the original, heavily pixelated sprites of Nazis dressed in gray stood out clearly against a bizarre gameworld of simply textured 90 degree angles. In the remake, sharply rendered Nazis dressed in grey are nearly impossible to make out against sharply textured cement backgrounds. Someone is shooting at me. WHERE THE HELL IS HE???
Serious Sam's bright and colorful enemies avoided this problem.
Too bad, I kinda liked the concept of a FPS that's all about using nothing but a variety of rocket launchers.

Re: What [not shmup] game are you playing now?
Yeah, that was the other thing I wanted to mention. There's a real visibility problem with the game. There's also a lot of clutter not seen in the original. You know your priorities are wrong when the GADs are showing up better than the enemies (also, since when did GADs need a flame on the bottom..?)
Many of the areas seem optimized for close-in combat anyway, so the only thing stopping the knife from being overpowering are the different score weights and sight lines still favoring the enemies when you attempt to knife them.
Shooting enemies with the MP-40-like seems to award half the points of knifing them. I'm not sure how many points you get for rockets versus knifing.

I think the idea is to weaken the enemies with the MP-40, then overkill them with a rocket for the "ludicrous gibs" bonus. The knife is for cramped spaces where using rockets would be suicidal.Ed Oscuro wrote:Shooting enemies with the MP-40-like seems to award half the points of knifing them. Finally managed to beat the Beholder on a single credit in Tower of Doom. I'm still not too confident on that boss but I'm getting the hang of it. What sucks is that you don't get to refill your health after the fight so you really need to learn his patterns.

You mean E2L2's Great Halls of Fire? Namely, the part with the spinning discs. That is REALLY kicking my ass.Mischief Maker wrote:Whelp, ROTT 2013 was fun up until the instadeath jump puzzles. Some parts of classic FPS gaming deserved to die.
Hopefully the optimization patch isn't that far off. I have a 3.2 GHz Quad-core and a GTX 580, and ATM this isn't enough to nail 60 FPS constant at 1920 x 1200.

Zack & Wiki: Quest for Barbaros' Treasure, as it is perfect for playing a stage or two once in a blue moon, much like Lost Kingdoms in fact. You never lose much progress when you have to stop for whatever reason.
I wish point & click adventure gamers played it more so they could tell me what they think. I for one found a couple of p&c games impenetrable in recent years. Not much of my genre it seems. Zack & Wiki, however, does very little wrong for my money. The idea of playing such a game for the score sounds zany and I might bite. More things than this and motion controls are unorthodox for the genre... or were these done before? That's why an opinion of p&c veterans would be welcome; I have no clue how fresh the game really is.
A lot like A Shadow's Tale, Z&W had depressingly little chance to even appear on radar of the exact gamer who might enjoy it most. No one knows how to hype such games anymore. It's the first p&c adventure game I'd recommend to those who normally can't be bothered playing p&c adventure games, but I'm not deluded as to how compelling it sounds.

Re: What [not shmup] game are you playing now?
RotT 2013 random thoughts 'n' stuff:
- The first rotating spikes you see in the game can be run over, by using the springboard in the room to jump up to the pipe running along the left side of the area.
- If the cursor turns red when you hover over an enemy, they're alive. Even if they appear to be dead.
- Ludicrous Gibs seems to work reliably only if you've shot an enemy before rocketing them, and then only if you shoot them with the rocket at danger close range (i.e. close enough that you might take damage), so the cloud of gibs can rain down on you. Does that seem right to everybody else?
- Using the same elements as switches and as decorative elements doesn't work well.
- "Awesome guitar remixes" are more dated than the original game's score. I like the '70s dreamy guitars of the second stage tune though.
- Killing two enemies at a time seems bad for the max multiplier, and score, since it just duplicates the current multiplier (i.e. after you've hit the 3x multiplier, killing two enemies at once will give up two 4x multipliers, and the next will be a 5x)
Still dying on the early stage because the game, despite its flaws, demands to be played BALLS TO THE WALL.

Re: What [not shmup] game are you playing now?
Finally, I got past E2L2. It was rocky but I was stubborn enough to find out what was next. More good shooting action helped me get over that bit.
Sometimes ROTT2013 will stutter severely for about 5 sec. after a level loads. I noticed this right as the GHoF checkpoint loaded up.
Knocking the resolution down to 1280x720 seems to help the performance. I saw something where single GTX580 users can get a slight performance gain on Deus Ex HR by using FXAA instead of MLAA, so the MLAA may have to go (I'm thinking probably no AA).
Ninja Spirit (arcade) has a really annoying bit right before the final boss. This is worse than ROTT2013's GHoF. TBQH, killing the final boss on that game is easier than getting to him.

I might try again sometime this week. I only have time to play about 1 credit a day of this, the game is so long.
