Stupid idiots at work who constantly have their shitty earbuds in while we're working on a high profile project.
Each time I go over to ask someone a question or check on the status of their work, I have to knock, wave, tap them on the shoulder in order to get an answer.

When exactly did workplaces get so lax about allowing this to become the norm?

When you work in a noisy open space having your headphones/earbuds on can actually help focus/concentrate a lot and dramatically improve your productivity during intense sessions.
Depends on what kind of work one is doing and of course nobody should isolate from his co-workers for too long.
Still...
Where I worked before being allowed to listen to music was a blessing, particularly during the period of time when a very loud and irritating guy joined the team.

Kind of a followup to my post of people passing off their pets as "assistant dogs" by putting a fake vest on them, and riding on the bus:

Bus drivers are catching onto that, and getting people off the buses if their pets aren't in a crate, at last. Companionship animals are allowed in a cage or pet carrier. Legit assistant animals are allowed normally. Which is kind of the opposite of what this thread is about, but such an abuse annoys me to no end.

I tried to go to Canada to hang out with the Ontario crew a few weeks ago, and the Canadian border patrol seized my desktop, laptop and phone. It's unlikely that I'll ever get them back, and I've lost a ton of personal works that I'll never get back. And now I've had to drop a bunch of money that I really can't afford on a new computer. I'm really fucking pissed still. I'm glad I still have a bunch of my works backed up, but there is so much lost, I can't even recall all of it.

So I was moving house when I decided to visit (I was intending to do a spectacular cross-continent journey to visit friends and shit, obviously canceled due to this shit) and I had my car full of pretty much all my belongings, so border patrol searched my car. No problem, whatever, I get it. They found some came across some porno doujinshi in my car that I had forgotten about, and decided that illustrated porn = pedophile (do note that there weren't even any flat chests in these, so it's not like it was even mistakable for that sort of thing), and proceeded to detain me while they searched the car thoroughly for CP. They asked me for the passwords to my devices and I refused to give them, so they seized them. Eventually they got tired of not finding anything and sent me back to the US, with everything except my laptop, desktop and phone.

From talking to a bunch of people familiar with the issue, Canadian border patrol are power tripping assholes with a hard-on for catching pedos. Apparently they also commonly don't send devices back when they're done searching them, even if they find nothing. So yeah, not holding my breath on getting anything back.

I'm sorry to say this, but having one's belongings stolen at airports and border crossings has been going on for years. I guess you guys don't read slashdot. Taking anything with you that you can't afford to lose is a bad idea. Taking anything that will catch the thugs' interest (like valuables, porn, or anything that looks even slightly dangerous) is also a bad idea.

I'm shocked that the medical facilities didn't get their own raping, but at least the victims collected ($925,000 and $1.6M) on their lawsuits. It's also crazy that the police haven't been disciplined. I can't imagine a scenario where I cost my employer a million bucks and walk away unscathed.

edit: not related at all, but I don't want to double post. There's a hopelessly depressing amount of comments on this tribute video to Robin Williams. There's a whole mess of them. You've got the cold unfeeling type who either rage about "oh it's just another celebrity death" or how "he was a coward", you've got someone who doesn't know the difference between joking about death and joking about someone who's dead, and let's not forget those religious nutjobs who have the audacity to believe that committing suicide earns you a trip to hell. Slightly related, the first time Brendz and I went to Chicago for the meet we took the bus. Brendz had a PCB wrapped up tight in a box and sealed with tape. They pulled it out of his bag and asked what it was and he said it was an arcade game. They didn't even look at it or open it. And this was on the US side Could have been filled with drugs for all they new, or a bomb.

Then again, same trip, a dude had an orange in his bag crossing into the US, they confiscated it, but the guy went to touch it on the counter and the border guy almost pulled his gun on him!!
