Night Of The Living Dead 3D - *
Not very good. Sid Haig was strangely entertaining again but that really was the only bit that wasn't a waste of my time. Still the best version of this film is (IMO) Tom Savini's 1990 remake.

Always kind of meant to get around to watching this, I always thought I should but for some reason didn't feel like it. I'm glad I finally gave it an hour or two of my time, much funnier than I expected - it would never have worked as a 'straight' film.

So much misunderstanding.emphatic wrote:^^THIS. I just don't get people who can't change their mindset to what's being offered.GaijinPunch wrote:I hold films to different standards based on what I think should be delivered.

At the end of the day it simply boils down to discerning critical faculties. A piece of crap doesn't stop being a piece of crap just because you can't tell whether or not it is one.
I enjoy a good popcorn movie as much as anyone: but that doesn't mean I'll be accepting of outright drivel. Good popcorn movies are still good at what they do without actually insulting the intelligence of the viewer.
Put it this way, if you sat through MoS and didn't actually hear how garbage the dialogue was at any given instance, didn't think the plotting was completely half-baked and idiotic (the dna of a billion people hidden in his blood - why?), tonally bereft of any kind of joy, and with non-existent acting, it's a tailor made movie for you.
But popcorn films can have dynamite scripts, superb performances and good plotting, without being expected to be cinematic masterpieces. To put that in emphatic terms: Dredd was like Citizen Kane when placed next to Man of Steel.
If you can't see the woods for the trees, however, I'm sure it all conveniently blends into one.
For the detailed breakdown of how it was so colossal a failure, I refer you to redlettermedia once again.

Speaking of redlettermedia, Skykid, I've seen you praise how well-thought-out their reviews are many times, so though I hadn't seen any myself, I mentally filed the site away as an intelligent source of criticism.
Several days ago, I'm looking through the last few pages of this thread and see Plinkett's Titanic review brought up.

Heh heh, the shtick in the Titanic review isn't all that palatable - it was pulled off much more wholesomely in the Star Wars prequel reviews, where the story sort of built up into complete absurdity. The review itself is always funnier anyhow.
The Half in the Bag reviews are always a good watch though. Aside from a comedic introduction, it's pretty much always played straight.

The Great Muppet Caper: ****
Yeah, I know this isn't the type of thing most people here watch, but I just watched this for the first time in many years last night, and was surprised just how much of it I could quote from memory. As is typical of most Muppet stuff, the Fourth Wall gets demolished about thirty seconds in, and it just gets more ridiculous from there. And as far as I know, nobody has ever managed to figure out just how they pulled off getting Muppets to ride bicycles in a circle...

Enjoyed this one, it's a little uneven in pacing but very ambitious marrying superhero spoof and mental health drama. On paper it shouldn't work, but Woody Harrelson really sells the character. There is one strangely confusing event, makes me wonder if some plot was left on the cutting room floor.

Death Wish 1-3 are some of the most badass movies ever. Classic over-the-top tough-guy cop movies starring Bronson.
I have a soft spot for Death Wish 3, since it's basically a Dirty Harry character against a bunch of mohawk rollerblade thugs like some arcade beatemup.

He's an architect, not a cop.
But yeah, 1-3 are certainly the highlights.
Death Wish: The best film of the bunch. Lots of social commentary and pure vigilante justice. Bronson's pain burns in us all.
Death Wish 2: The nastiest film of the bunch. Gritty and disturbing. You feel like you're in a nasty, dark alley for the entire experience. My favorite. Still no goddamn uncut copy for the U.S. R1.
Death Wish 3: The action film of the bunch. So much death. Bronson's highest kill count in probably any movie?
4-5 are really for only the completist. Bronson is definitely aging towards the end. Damn shame he left us with three Family of Cops made for TV movies.

This weekend The Master, which I loved. Black Swan, I watched because my wife wanted to, went in poised to hate it and was surprised to find it actually decent-ish (if not my type of film), and the original Funny Games, which I actually thought was a bit lacking in much reason to exist even if it was very well shot, written etc.
I also recently watched British comedy horror Sightseers. That was bloody great!

The criticism between the jokes, though? One of the complaints this guy harps on in the first part is that there isn't enough exposition, and complaining that big-budget blockbusters need more exposition is like complaining they need more CGI or prettier actors.

Re: Movies you've just watched
Checked out that horror anthology flick by the name of "The ABC's of Death" that was released properly back in 2012. Has 26 different directors and their take on the subject matter at hand, death. They were given a single letter and total artistic creativity/freedom to come up (with anything goes including the kitchen sink as well) to do a short film dealing with the chosen letter and how it relates to death. Plenty of live action, the occasional claymation stop-motion, and traditional cel animation bits round up the 26 film shorts collection. As usual, expect some nudity as it's a given in the horror film genre. Total running time is an impressive 2 hours and six minutes.
The short dealing with the letter "H" as shown in ABC's of Death compliation is an interesting and eye-raising tidbit not to be missed.

Knight Of The Dead - **
What a strange thing this is. The story has no real beginning, and the end is not really a conclusion. It's knights and zombies, for all the flaws which are many and varied, it was quite compelling due to the utterly bleak atmosphere.

Maniac (2012/3) - ****
Well - here's the film where I drop using the CMoon scale. It served me well, but I'm finding it difficult to reconcile giving 2* to brilliant films which I'd not watch more than a few times. So here it is, Maniac stars Elijah Wood as a very confused serial killer. The soundtrack is perfect, it sets the scene while also giving a slight nod to soundtracks from 80s horror flicks. The violence is unsettling and cruel. Much of the film is shot in first person (and I don't mean annoying handycam, I mean from the killers point of view), and it's terrifying. Only the final scene lets it down slightly.

As usual, Japan shows they know how to do what America routinely gets wrong: make a good modern movie based on a TV show from the 1980s that appeals to fans and newcomers alike.

Best Korean film I've seen in a good long while. Kim Ki Duk's pretty harrowing story of an underage twosome pimping and prostituting for a trip to Europe. Doesn't quite run smoothly.
Very sensitive shooting and the script is beautiful in its brevity. Couldn't find a line of expository waffle in there.
A bit of madness, love, revenge, spiritual catharsis - several well-handled themes and strong performances. The metaphorical final third was a nice way to wrap up.
Recommended to people who like film, as opposed to did you see how many miles that CG guy punched that other CG guy through those buildings.

I just slightly changed the direction so I could express a blanket opinion that completely encompasses and includes the film you were referencing regardless of its standing against US made 80's reboots. Make no mistake, I'm not dodging your assessment of the film; my statement went to great pains to include it.Edmond Dantes wrote:Nothing pisses me off more then when people modify quotes to change the message.Skykid wrote:As usual, Japan makes good modern movies?Edmond Dantes wrote:As usual, Japan shows they know how to do what America routinely gets wrong: make a good modern movie
