cool stuff I shall give it a go, from my vague memories we're talkin about LOTGH levels of episode numbers are we? :p

oh and is there a dub, and would it be ok to let my kids watch?
Yeah, about 94 or 96 episodes I think. I think there is a dub, but I'll resent you if you watch it that way ;). Hmmmm, a family could probably get away with watching it, but there's plenty of adult situations, but nothing graphic or too explicit compared to half the drivel on modern television. First handful of episodes have a see-through night gown on one of the tenants, but it seems like that gets replaced about 10 episodes or so in for something less revealing. It's often implied she gets around, and people are almost perpetually drunk, but again, I wouldn't consider that too inappropriate for youth, but that's me. I guess use your own judgement based on that; otherwise, no nudity, and the occasional swear like "shit" or "damn."

Does anyone know if the Wangan Midnight manga is any good, or at least half as good as Initial D was?

It is a reconstruction of the original series in some respects, and an expanded universe in others. But it will never have the time, simply by virtue of its scale, to give the same kind of characterization and the same depth as the original series had. I would have loved to see more of the other characters in 3.33-- in fact, my biggest complaint with the entire Rebuild series so far is that even important secondary characters, like Asuka and Mari, have almost no depth at all. But I think that within the scope of the films, the third is very successful. It really felt like Evangelion to me, in a way that I really can't explain. It felt like I was watching the series again for the first time.

And good to hear RE Yamato; I've been interested in it for a long time, but I never got around to watching the original series. 2199 reignited my interest, and certainly seems great so far.
I suppose 3.33 does have the 'feel', maybe I should rewatch them all again.

Yeah if you like 2199 you will definitely like the originali first series, as it does not stray too far from it.

The entire first half of 3.33 lost me, and the second half was predictable. It wasn't ... bad, but I felt like I was watching a different show altogether instead of a continuation to 2.22. I ended up looking at the CG for the majority of the time

What are you talking about? Monogatari isn't that moetard, NisiOisiN's stories and chatacters are unique and entertaining. KnK it's not, it's just generic fantasy with schoolgirls, good animation and those stupid Kyoani character designs.

Monogatari isn't that moe
are you high son
generic fantasy
Let's see, both shows have immortal protags with a grill who does all the fighting for him; a female cast with varying ages, appearances and abilities; wapanese apparitions and a ton of talking.

Monogatari makes fun of every cliché of harem animes (loli not so loli, super tsundere, super nerd meganeko, etc), the same way Zaregoto and Mahou Shojo Risuka are parodies/tributes to mystery and magical girl series.
Formless God wrote:Let's see, both shows have immortal protags with a grill who does all the fighting for him; a female cast with varying ages, appearances and abilities
Then KnK it's just a copy of monogatari. All those characteristics can be found on hundred of series.
ton of talking.
Most of ranobes have a shitload of talking, mainly because they are told in first person.

Read Kizumonogatari, it's not moe at all, it's gory and touching. You will understand the parodic tone of the rest of the story after reading it.

That doesn't mean Monogatari isn't being terrible otaku pandering trash though.

I think you are hating it for the wrong reasons. If you don't like these kind of series, don't watch them. It's so easy and unfair to compare it with things like BOTI and then saying it's shit, instead of compare it with series with the same thematics.
You know, I've been seen dozen of series like monogatari (from the 80's, 90's and the last decade), and this is one of the best series of the genre (comedy/supernatural fantasy)

I just finished watching Heavy Metal L Gaim. I don't know why a lot of people say this isn't a very good series. The mechs and animation were great. The plot was very cool and lots of twists. The opening track is so freaking good too

I love Five Star Stories and have tried watching Heavy Metal L-Gaim several times, but I'm going to have to say it's not that great either. It looks okay, the mechs are fine, but my main problem is with the characters. I don't care about any of them, they're not interesting and their actions and motivations don't seem to make a whole lot of sense. And what's the deal with the fairy? Sometimes the other characters can hear and understand her fine, other times they don't.

And those 80's hairs, goddamn.

I think my most recent attempt ended somewhere around episode 19.

I'm kinda like that with Vifam - I like the setting, the mechs and the amazing OP, but I just can't get past I think I'm on about episode 11.

There does seem to be a lot of pointless running around at the beginning but once the second season starts they start tying together all the loose ends. The mechs get crazier and crazier and you start seeing the designs develop into more the style of those in FSS.

Seems like Umetsu will be back next year with Wizard Barristers: Benmashi Cecil (he's currently directing Galilei Donna, but it doesn't have his characteristic characters design)

Thanks for recommending Shin Sekai Yori Randorama, just finished watching it and I love it, must recommend it too.

Well, it hasn't been too long since I abandoned the series so I went back and watched episode 19 to pick it up again. It basically encapsulated all of my complaints into one episode:

--
Some guy in the crew: "I'm going to betray you and sell you to the enemy!"

*mech battle*

Some guy in the crew: "I'm sorry, I promise I'll be good from now on!"

Daba: "Okay, I trust you, you're a good man."

Both chicks throwing themselves at the main character: "Daba-kuuuuuuuun!"
--

The chicks seem to like him just because he's the main character, I don't remember him doing anything worthwhile to either of them. Leccee gave up her whole life (military career, presumably family and friends) just to try to win his affections. And the blue-haired guy who keeps chasing him? I remember they met in one of the first episodes, and Daba doesn't give him a ride into town or something totally insignificant like that. But somehow the blue-haired guy takes it as a huge insult, completely abandons whatever life he had before and joins every group possible (bandits, military) just to be on the opposite side of Daba at all times so they can have one mech battle after another.

I'm not sure if I can take much more of the inane characters, even with promises of cooler mechs.

Because that's the way it was intended to be. You can't be nekketsu and serious at the same time.
