Re: Movies you've just watched
This is the one I watched last year after not having seen the film for years, so maybe that's why I didn't think it sucked balls? I was in High School when I last saw the theatrical version (on VHS), read the book about 5 years ago and it's great. Maybe this is like The Shining, where the book and film have different qualities? I love Lynch' quirky stuff and how he can make stuff that feel like a fever dream, menacing and overwhelming. I have watched the mini-series, but I still think the Lynch film is better.CMoon wrote:Also, I've found some talk that a fan edit of the film (alternate version redux?) is the best version to see.

Nice film. The bad guy goes down just like I remembered. Didn't remember a lot of the other stuff, heh

I certainly did watch this 2013 remake of Evil Dead to support the small horror film industry that's on life support these days...without the much needed profits to fund their next big & much hyped horror film, it ain't gonna happen.system11 wrote:Evil Dead (2013) - ***
Is it as good as the original? No. Did they get through a whole swimming pool of blood? Yes. A modern watered down horror film this is not. Minor lull near the end before a full-on assault of the senses in the final minutes. Horror fans should try to catch this at the cinema, to send the message that yes - we *do* still want horror films with a real budget.
There're some truly gut-wrenching moments in this remake of ED, indeed. From what I can recall, the 2013 remake of ED was playing in American theaters for about two to three weeks tops before being bumped off the map to make room for the bigger & more profitable films that Hollywood studios think will rake in the $$$$. It's a given these days.

Wind Blast. Don't expect going into this action movie thinking there's a plot. I got about 4 minutes in before the title popped up and I had no clue why there was a man taking a picture with his phone or why he killed the person he killed. From then on you were supposed to I guess know what was happening. If there wasn't an insane amount of stunts, car chases(try taking a Jeep and driving backwards avoiding getting hit by a huge loader truck) and some kung-fu as well. This is in all sense a modern western mixed with a kung-fu movie. Plot aside, this is worth at least a watch for the all the action. There's quite a lot of it, and even thoughts 2 hours long, I still feel like they had to cut out a lot of plot scenes as you never really knew what the hell was going on. Still Francis Ng was good in this.

Finally got around to watching this one, nicely over the top and a lot of fun. Could have done with a little more pre-outbreak film time just to solidify the setting. Loved the stylised low budget look, I think I could watch Rose McGowans opening scene dance on repeat for several hours before tiring of it.

By coincidence, check out the name on the fuselage of the P-47 at 1:29 here...so it's the successor to Jack Burton's big rig? Doesn't seem likely...

The Expendables 2.
Good stuff but the pacing seemed a bit weird - still, it's nice that they didn't try to make the bad guys overstay their welcome with onscreen time. Interesting take on the usual good guy / bad guy fight reversal for the last fight.
One thing the film doesn't quite try to follow is the way many '80s style action flicks (the Blu-Ray version has some kind of documentary on "the rise of the '80s action film" among the Extras) tended to give pretty funny karmic deaths to bad guys...Bennett "letting off some steam," and Lo Pan learning how to throw a knife in last night's film. The Expendables franchise seems more interested in making the characters just shoot and punch a lot of things - not that this is bad, it just doesn't feel as bookended with solid put-away moves as many other films in this segment. The self-referential stuff was somewhere between cute and annoying, but only annoying in retrospect - I had to smile at most all of it, even if it could have been more cleverly done (although I wondered if the minicar in the airport was meant to be a JonnyCab reference - Arnie and Willis tear the doors off after all). Seeing Arnie's skull overlay at the credits opening looking like the Terminator was a nice touch. Chuck Norris seemed like a really quiet and normal fellow here, and the difference between his acting method and the more usual style employed by the others was pretty stark. Again, not bad, but different - hard to judge for sure since there wasn't much range called for in his scenes. I felt the same thing held true for Van Damme to some degree - I wasn't really feeling the "unique take" on the character he was supposed to provide. Not a bad act at all but I wasn't really feeling the charisma. Again, not bad; the character didn't seem to call for Bill The Butcher-style charisma, just a quiet fellow who got things done.
Kept thinking "Billy" was being played by Chris Pine for some reason. That added an interesting dimension to the film.
Best thing was probably the American-style town they camped out in. Also wondering if they'll do something interesting with the old biplane from the end of the film (gee, thanks Church).

Oblivion
About equal to Tron: Legacy in its pros and cons. Starts well, ends flatly and predictably. Extremely formulaic and often silly dialogue undermines any potential seriousness. Attempts too much layering with its plot, , failing to outdo all the stuff it rips off.
Early intrigue loses momentum about half way through and the Russian girl is an awful actor.
It is utterly beautiful to look at though, worth watching for the audio/visual blend.

Considering that the film of Oblivion is based on the graphic novel of the same name, it's a given.Skykid wrote:Oblivion

Place beyond the pines
Saw this last night. Awesome!! Really enjoyed it from start to finish. Well worth checking out. With this and Drive I have really grown to like Ryan Gosling, who I always considered a pretty boy romance chick flick actor. He is obviously trying to branch out and expand his roles, and doing a great job.

Ha, the link is to an Argentine film from 1942...Gosling is really branching out! Anyway, film looks interesting, I'll check it out.

The Heist (2009) - ***
Nice quirky little comedy with some good actors. It's not going to set the world on fire but it was fun and relaxing to watch, about the polar opposite of my viewing habits lately.

Slightly OT:
If you live any where near Denver and don't go to at least a couple of iterations of Film on the Rocks this summer, you should have your head examined.

Last weekend I watched The Raid, and yesterday I saw Dredd.
The short villain in the Raid was awesome, what a little bastard. The action scenes were so electrifying, after the movie I had to go to the pull up bar outside and do some reps, lol...
Dredd impressed me, I expected nothing of the movie since the only Judge Dredd related thing I know is the pathetic 1995 movie. This one is great and begs for a sequel

I loved Dredd, but unfortunately it bombed pretty hard in theatres. Apparently, it's been doing pretty well on DVD/Blu Ray though so maybe there's hope afterall.Leandro wrote: Dredd impressed me, I expected nothing of the movie since the only Judge Dredd related thing I know is the pathetic 1995 movie.
