The FS2434 is indeed among the best 1080p ever made but I wouldn't be surprised if that HP series would perform even better in direct comparison, we're looking at small differences but heh.
Other things the HPs definitely have over are the size (25" and 27"), a fantastic almost completely glossy coating (a big plus for picture quality), and fairer prices.
Now they sure don't come with all the fancy features and build quality of Eizo or NEC...and it's almost certain that HP made that excellent Pavilion series half by accident.

Regarding 16:10, I like that aspect better too, but I gave up considering those able to properly display 16:9 w/ black bars from a non-PC source (like an HD-era console) are extremely rare, and typically expensive.
Yes, on most 16:10 monitors, 16:9 external sources will be displayed stretched vertically, the monitor menu's aspect settings either don't exist specifically for 16:9 or there's a generic one that simply won't work as expected.
Check the 16:10 monitors section on wecravegamestoo or some related reviews on tftcentral, it is an unfortunate reality.

Eizo only makes two gaming monitors, and their other one is the FS2735, a 27" 144Hz IPS panel. Unfortunately it uses FreeSync, so for most people it's just a fixed refresh rate display. It's also very expensive, costing quite a bit more than other monitors using the exact same panel. On the upside, you do get their low-latency image processor with it.

Anyone know where to find 5 pole phoenix connectors for Extron switchers? I can find just about every other size connector, but I can't find 5 pole.

I can't use glossy. The reflections drive me crazy. Unless you're always viewing in a perfectly dark room, it doesn't really matter how good the picture is when you're confronted with all that glare! What I'm saying is subjective is what monitor that people like. That's all.

Well the HPs are not 100% glossy anyway, it's a very gentle hazy/'smoked' coating.

Depends of course, playing games with rather dark contents/environement, in a bright room...definitely rules out using a glossy screen.
But if it's bright colorful games like a majority of shmups, arcade and retro games, it's not really a problem.
Then when the room's dimmer/dark, the glossiness becomes a significant advantage.
The problem with grainy coatings is that it's impossible to ever benefit from that clearer picture.

My two main flat panel displays are semi-glossy, because after I got a taste of it I couldn't go back to grainy.

Glossy/non-AG panels are really nice. Bolder and more vibrant colors and slightly more clarity. But unless you're playing in a completely pitch-black room, the reflections that show up on screen are a deal-breaker, at least for me. Actually, even in a pitch black room, you'll still get reflections of light bouncing off your face and onto the screen.

Glare and reflections are far more of a hamper on image quality than semi-matte/glossy or even full matte/AG, since they they can completely obscure parts of the screen. Very bad for competitive gaming.

With semi-matte or full matte, your lighting options and placement of the display in a room are far more flexible.

Honestly my semi-glossy LCDs (tv and monitor) show less reflections than my - naturally - full glass CRTs.

I don't know why it's such a big deal with flat panels today when we're still okay with the tubes...

Personally I never play in a hallway or out in the fields, so I kind of always manage to arrange the room's lights/windows and curtains so that I won't be bothered by reflections.

Well, whatever.

EDIT: when you say 'slightly' more clarity in my eyes it's considerably more. some of the highest quality 1440p and 4K monitors feature quite gentle AG and therefore acceptable, yes, but they're not that many and the good ones are damn expensive.

Is there a way to get 240p out of 480i in S-video? Would it be as simple as using an Extron unit with RGB and then a Keene RGB2S for the S-video conversion for the? Are there other ways to achieve this?

The Extron RGB interfaces accept YUV and Y/C (s-video) signals as well. So if you're using it on a CRT, you can do the 240p "conversion trick" with a s-video signal as well. All you need are the proper cables (4-pin s-video to 2x BNC for the input and whatever you want to use on the output).

A good cheap one is this:

I used it on my SNES for a while before going RGB, and then on my GameCube for a while until I did an RGB "mod" (PAL mobo in region-modded NTSC console).

Okay. Thank you!

One more... How would I get from Tim's NESRGB connector (8 pin Din) to the DB25 on my early PVM?
I've got a wookiewin DB25-scart as well.

Any ideas about the performance of this thing? I'm guessing it'd be no better than the Chinese crap boxes, but I've heard Atlona is a high-end brand.

no, they just relabel chinese OEM units. For some units they had a lucky hand, for others (like the processor you linked to) not so much.

Anyone here have experience with Neo Geo stuff? I have an american AES and a small handful of carts, and frankly I want more games....games I can't possibly afford LOL.

I'm debating getting a AES to MVS converter, but there's so many different ones and I'm not sure if there's any flaws to using one of these. They are also expensive, so I'm debating getting an MVS board instead and wiring up a jamma harness to a power supply and SCART connector and whatnot. I love the way the AES looks as a console, and enjoy the plug-and-play aspect of a console versus an ugly motherboard with frankensteined wires coming off it, but I figured I'd try to get opinions here before I dumped money into a converter and not be happy with it....I'd assume that a consolized MVS would work flawlessly, whereas an AES with a converter may not.

I've heard complaints about the ###-in-one MVS carts so I'm probably staying away from those, but even still I'd rather spend $50 on a puzzle bobble cart for the MVS than god knows how much it is on the AES (my guess is $2k). I love some of these games, but I'd rather not sell my guitar collection to get them LOL

There is going to be a flash cart solution for the Neo Geo soon. That would will be my AES solution.

How on earth are MVS to AES converters ~$400? They look like literally bare PCBs that just wire the pins to each other, what's going on???

Reading about that flash cart, it has an FPGA and tons of flash chips and stuff on it, and it's expected to be around $400 apparently. So again, what's so special about these adapters?

Will the Analogue NT Mini have the real clock speed, or the slowed-down-to-true-60Hz one? Or do people not know yet? If it's the latter, then I'm not buying it.

That and the stupid number of pins means two really big PCBs, possibly 4 layer, with some sort of interconnect between them, and made in small quantities.

Looking online, I do see that the NEO SNK ARCADE MVS-Magic Key can be had for as little as $179 USD in bulk.

We've been over this before. The difference is too small for you to notice, but will significantly improve compatibility with displays. You're being anal.

Couldn't they just add a switch to set the clock speed?

So. The Extron Rgb interface "240p trick" works great in my setup.
BUT, since I introduced a switcher in the chain (Extron System 8 Plus). it doesn't work any more. Strange... i wonder why.
FWIW, the Dreamcast doesn't apply the trick even when bypassing the switcher. Could the sync pulses associated with the RGBHV signal of the DC and the Extron switcher be the common point of failure here?

Also, on another very interesting note : while the PS2 480i games don't apply the interface "240p trick" anymore when going through the switcher, they now seem to appear in progressive scan... 480 lines drawn for each of the 60 frames. I don't notice any flicker or softness anymore. I know what 480i looks like on that monitor and I swear that last night while playing Final Fantasy X on PS2 the picture was rock solid. Maybe I'm going crazy? I'll check again tonight to confirm and/or deny this.

If this is truly the case here, then it means that what I saw last night was deinterlaced 480i : on the first frame the even lines are linedoubled, and on the 2nd frame, the uneven lines are linedoubled, 3rd frame even, 4th frame uneven, etc etc. But it stills makes for a more solid picture than true 480i. I did notice a bit of jerkyness on the picture every now and then(ie : a diagonal line switches from one way of being drawn to the other between every frame), which would make sense if the picture was processed like I think it is.
All I know is that FF X looked incredible on the NEC. Very stable and crisp. Same with Ys : The Ark of Napishtim

Orrrrrrr.... maybe I'm just loosing my mind

Do you have the switch before or after your RGB interface ? I assume the switch does have (possibly undeatable) ASDP integrated, so you're double-processing your sources. You could try to switch around the sync polarity (internal dip switches on the interface) to see if it makes a difference.

The System 8+ certainly doesn't do any scan conversion. 15khz in, 15khz out. Definitely. No idea what you're seeing right now.

Hi Fudoh!
The switch is before the interface. I will try to tweak the sync polarity on the interface once I get home after work.

As for what I'm seeing : do you think it could be deinterlaced 480i?
Or rather I'm seeing a 480i picture but the flicker just happens to be tamed extremely well in my setup?

Will post a pic/vid tonight

It would be a switch to lower display compatibility more than anything. If you're truly that concerned you'll have to get a CRT, or maybe a projector that's known to handle odd resolutions.
