Good shit, man. Quite a quick improvement.

For rank, I find that 1-6 still isn't very hard on max rank, and powering down in 1-7 is a bit difficult. As with Dragon Blaze, you'd need to power down 4 times per stage to stay at low rank, and in doing so you'd have a much harder time dealing with bosses and stray popcorns, your score would lower, and some attacks would actually become MORE difficult (the pre-tech attack in 1-5, for example).

In short, the costs outweigh the benefits.

e:

Yeah, I know the stage order is fixed if you hard reset (if by "hard reset" you mean powering off and back on), but remember I have to re-unlock the X-36 every time I start up the ROM, meaning I have to reset. I'm stuck with random stage order. Added to the fact that this emulator version won't reliably save and load states, and I'm playing with a severe handicap.

If by hard reset you mean shift f3, though, I did not know that. I'll try that tomorrow.

Thanks!

Yeah, probably just best to stay full powered at all times. Gah, already thinking about getting back into it again. Maybe after STGT's over.
but remember I have to re-unlock the X-36 every time I start up the ROM, meaning I have to reset.
What version of MAME are you using? Shmupmame 2.2 0.140 permanently saves the top score and service mode settings for me, I only had to put in the X-36 code once. It doesn't have problems with savestates and it also doesn't have that annoying graphical glitch during Chaos Queen that others mentioned.

Yep.

I was excited to get to level 4 and then when I got there I wasn't so excited anymore because it was really freaking hard. But I managed to get my first chain that run also!

Real life surprise after surprise really took away all my practice time so far. That and the 3rd stage onward just isn't that fun to me. :? I would really like to reach 1-5, so I may give it another shot tomorrow.

I did it! I hit both of my goals for the week and I feel pretty OK.

deca - 1,016,300 - 2-1 - X-36 - ShmupMAME 2.2

This is my first "clear" in an STGT. Being able to get through even just the first loop of a game in under a week from start to finish really makes me feel like I've actually improved over the past year. Slightly annoyed I didn't get further into 2-1, but considering I didn't practice it at all I can't complain much.

I think my highest medal chain for the week was 24 or something.

This is as much as I can do without wanting to kill myself.

Would have helped if I hadn't wasted 3 lives on the 1-6 boss.

You can avoid the random stage by resetting the game, since there is a default order for your first coin that is: Air -> Water -> Ground -> Train
It's not the best route since level 4 train is IMO the hardest, but atleast you can memo it. I think you can modify the ROM files a bit so you get your desired route.

I admit defeat. For some reason I thought I'd have time to play after work today but the deadline is right when I get off, so whoops! Should have played more earlier in the week.
