Fuck yeah, I need more of this in my life. I love that diminuitive guitaring in the middle. Slightly clearer recording here I think: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PjATgCJ ... B841EFDB51

Gauntlet III - Amiga version - Track 1 - Tim Follin

edit: damn astounding soundtrack. just listening to it straight through. dunno how well some of these tracks, like track 3, actually could fit a gauntlet, but damn.

edit #2: okay, funky bagpipes for the title track are cracking me up, that's a bit much :) still great fun to listen to!

The bonus track reminds me of a tune I know, but I can't quite place it. [wait, did I just listen to an entire soundtrack for a goat simulator?]

WCW/nWo Revenge Starrcade BGM

Brings back good memories of raucously treacherous four player battle royales (surprise clothesline in your fucking face LOLOLOL). But it's also a scintillating tune that'd easily fit Gradius II, III or Gaiden's irrepressibly upbeat soundtracks.

Gain Ground (PS2 ver) ORIGIN ~ AWAKEN (Theme of Heroes)

Had to remind myself how amazing S.S.H.'s arrangement of this tune for GG's PS2 remake is. Absolutely soars. How I wish there'd been an M2 deluxe Gain Ground "redo" disc like Fantasy Zone and Space Harrier's. I wanna play AC GG with these tunes!

Magician Lord - Stage 4 - Castle of Devils. Haven't beat the game yet, but this score is my favorite yet. It's very anime like. Reminds me of the Neverending Story somehow. I can listen to it for days.

^I can remember that one note for note despite not having played ML for years now.

It always reminded me of The Raccoons, haha. Very 80s. Magician Lord has some excellent tunes in both power synth and more reflective modes.

The only game I played of late being Metropolis Street Racer, I found the music so bad I'd let it be. A game like no other it was. Is the PGR music equally bad?
I mean, there's Burnout 3-bad and then there's this.

That first song gives me such a Sonic R vibe.

and then I look down to the description
Oh shit, Richard Jaques did it, that would explain it.

the man cannot write lyrics for his life
also, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LK_dljRaHB0 sure as hell doesn't sound like music that would be in a racer (well, any racer other than Sonic R)

that being said, it is well presented like a proper radio station
Come check out my website, I guess. Random stuff I've worked on over the last two decades.

I don't mind the DJs terribly. Eurogamer review*) namedrops GTA, but in the year 2000, who could tell just how BIG guns you need to challenge Rockstar on that front?

The more I read about MSR development (and release; three PAL prints where it sold measly 13297 copies), the more it seems to me like the Shenmue of car games. Nice try, but the truth is out there.

I can only wonder which print(s) are the two copies I own.

*)Okay, kudos for the "Go, Street Racer!" headline.

FC/SFC-era Natsume are god and so are these compilations. These three games needed proper soundtracks so goddamn badly. The KKs are charming as always but my favourite is the smooth, expertly adrenaline-tinged TNWA. Very near Zuntata brilliance. The feelings during that seventh boss fight, ma gawd.

I need to track down Vols 1&2 for Wild Guns and their classic FC action soundtracks (Dragon Fighter, Kage, Solbrain, Abadox & Final Mission).

edit: WHOA I HAD NO IDEA THERE WAS A SUNSOFT EDITION WITH NAOKI KODAKA GOODNESS  I thought that stuff was off-limits with all the licensed games :o Imma have to break my "collect games only no merch" vows pretty soon if this stuff doesn't keep turning up in lossless.

I've been replaying Steel Battalion and I still love the opening song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-GcU4ak6ckY

That game's entire soundtrack is really good. It seems that the guy who composed it, Naru Shirai, has never done anything else. Too bad.

I didn't know Kinuyo Yamashita has a Youtube channel where she uploads stuff!

Power Blade music owns. I wish it was one good game rather than two flawed ones in separate regions but the BGM is wonderful regardless.

I used to mistakenly think Castlevania was her one notable soundtrack, but lately she seems to pop up in all sorts of my favourite stuff. SFC Kiki Kaikai 2, most recently. Also she's credited as a programmer in FC Contra, the most legendary work of my gaming history.

Also from the "all this time" file: FFFF, I didn't realise Yuzo Koshiro's Slap Fight MD tracks were on Early Best Collection 2nd. They sound marvelous. I can finally ditch Iron Goat's (excellent) gamerip.

NOW THAT IS THE SHOOTING BGM

What do you mean you're suing us Furukawa-san

Honestly, the second one uses similar sounds, but is not that close to gradius. The melody is just so cheery, not even close to the gradius feel.

And the first one seems more fitting for an RPG.

lolwut! Challenger 1985, Free Flyer, Tabidachi, Burning Heat, A Way Out Of The Difficulty, Maximum Speed, Departure for Space, Sand Storm, Try To Star, In The Wind, Cosmo Plant, Crystal Labyrinth, Mechanical Base, Apollon, Hydra, Demeter, Prometheus, most of Gaiden's OST and a million other tracks not on the top of my head ATM are 150% cheerier than the average non-cute 'em up shooter BGM. The first two decades' worth of Gradius music was always decidedly on the lighter side, up until GV's harder electronica/orchestral score. For every Boss Rush 2 there's three Boss Rush 1s.

It just isn't the same, call it what you will, even though gradius and slap fight both use similar sounds, the tracks are not similar.

I'm sure you could swap Flight with Departure for Space and nobody would bat an eyelash. It's not just the tonal or melodic similarities either, the propulsion via the "lead" bassline and aggressive drum fills is also very familiar. Of course it's not a 1:1 photocopy, but Koshiro obviously recognised what went into that particular "sound" and worked with it. He's repeatedly cited Gradius and classic Konami game music among his major inspirations.

You could just as easily say the song (and "Sortie") resemble Thunder Cross music ("Skywalker," "Endless Labyrinth" and "Final Base" are further prime examples). Gradius is just the most prominent example of that particular bouncy, melodic sound Konami shooters tended towards. Nobody will ever say these songs bring to mind Darius, R-Type, Thunder Force or Raiden. Or Axelay.

Dragon Fighter has wicked BGM

Natsume FC/SFC action game music. Image Beautiful.

Related - "IWADON," a free to download Hiroyuki Iwatsuki tribute album, sounds pretty good so far, love the Ninja Warriors Again intro cover.

I've been going apeshit over how great the Sonic Wings 3 soundtrack is the past few days. It's really great.
