Movies you've just watched

Finally saw Apocolypse Now (original length); can't believe I've gone my whole life without watching it, but still can't help but feel it is overrated. Scattered across this huge mess of a film are some great cinematic accomplishments. I'm not quite sure the first half (war is hell) meshed perfectly with the 'heart of darkness' second half, but that doesn't mean the film doesn't succeed, it's more just an observation. I hope I'm not messing with folks sacred cows, but the film certainly could use editing, but as pointed out by a friend of mine, this is maddness filmed under insane circumstances, or rather to say, created and filtered through the eyes of madmen. It would be hard to say what could be edited, since it is impossible to know what works for one person or another (my friend was particularly affected by the scene with them air-lifting cows out of a battle zone.) I feel as though precision could still be useful here--something to bring the huge looming motifs together into a more unified whole, but there's no rule which says cinema can't be sloppy.

I'd love to see the documentary on the making of this movie as it is apparently as or more interesting than the film itself.

Edit: Oh yeah, and the opening montage with The Doors playing 'The End' is just a fucking great scene.

Apocalypse Now gets better each time you watch it. The entire thing is Heart of Darkness really, and once you know how it plays out it's perhaps less jarring.
Seriously, it's one of the greats, a knockout film and mindboggling to watch. I still can't believe its age (oh what you can do without CG!)

I tip my hat to Coppola for wrenching what he did out of the insane amount of hours they shot, he made a damn good un there. Which is more than can be said for any film he made afterwards - I consider AN the guy's greatest fluke.

Not to mention that actor Martin Sheen almost died during principle filming of Apocalypse Now...who would've replaced him as the main leading actor if he did pass on?

The scene of the furious gun battle with the heavily armed gunboat is crazy indeed. Nowdays, modern-day gunboats pack some serious firepower...a force to be reckon'd with indeed.

I enjoyed it, but then again my criteria and taste in films is questionable.

I own the full Redux version and I'm gonna watch it again in the next few days.
CMoon prompted me to watch Hearts of Darkness for the first time yesterday. The most impressive thing is the no CGI. Then there's the heart attack and Nicolas Cage's uncle coming close to blowing his brains out.

LMAO @ the part where the guy manages to drive the limo all the way to airport, though a collapsing building, under a collapsing bridge and while the whole Californian plate is collapsing to hell around him!! Lol!

Any kind of drama that was originally intended by the producers, was instantly killed off by the cheesy acting and by the impossible & hilarious scenes through out the film!
What a retarded movie, no wonder I don't watch Hollywood garbage anymore...
Good thing I didn't pay for this either!

It pre-dates Romero's Night of the Living Dead by like 2 years and it obviously inspired/influenced him.

Spent this afternoon watching Apocalypse Now Redux again.

EDIT:- Watched The Social Network. A perfectly decent film, nothing special though and not worth the rave review at Rotten Tomatoes. They go for realism every time and give films based on real life events almost perfect scores, pfffft.
Anyway, if the film is to be believed, then the guy did need to get sued by the two parties.
Funniest thing about the story is that the inventor of the World's most popular social networking site is antisocial himself.

Recently saw...

Red Cliff
An epic two-part, 5 hour Woo film about the battle of Chi Bi during the Three Kingdoms period in China. It has some of the largest non-CG battles I've seen in any film ever. The heroes pull off some truly ridiculous feats - think Dynasty Warriors meets 300. I'd recommend this film to just about anyone who enjoys action movies of any type.

Zombie vs. Ninja
Tied with Halloween 3 for worst film ever made in my opinion. However, unlike Halloween 3, this one is so bad it's good. It's like Kung Pow, only they weren't even trying to be funny. One of the main characters is a white guy who wears a headband that says "Ninja" and randomly shows up to help the protagonist for no apparent reason. Take a look (but remember, you will never ever get the 1 minute and 25 seconds back)

The Good, The Bad, The Weird
A self-described "oriental western" from Korea. Rare to find a movie that can make me laugh and has good action scenes at the same time. I'd even say it's a much better film than Sukiyaki Western Django.

The Red Spectacles
Decided to watch some other Mamoru Oshii films after coming to the conclusion Ghost in the Shell and Jin-Roh are pretty much the best anime I've seen. While set in the same universe as Jin-Roh, this is an entirely different movie. Almost no action, and it gets very surreal before too long - can't really say anything more without spoilers. My friends thought I was crazy to like this film, but my father loved it. Don't expect to be able to enjoy this one without using your brain.

The Last Battle aka Le Dernier Combat (1983) by Luc Besson

Shot entirely in black and white and set in a barely inhabited post-apocalyptic world where the atmosphere has rendered humanity mute, Luc Besson's feature length début was nothing short of ambitious. The plot ostensibly follows The Man as he scavenges for parts to keep his light aircraft in repair - venturing out into the wasteland he stumbles across a hospital where he meets The Doctor, a man living in fear of The Brute (played by Jean Reno) who is attempting to gain entry to the hospital and kill The Doctor. Through non-verbal communication, The Man and The Doctor come to help each other in an attempt to survive and keep The Brute at bay. Despite the innovative premise and stark, stylish beauty of Besson's direction, the film moves at an odd pace whereby it's more confusion and intrigue that keeps the viewer watching, rather than for any substance of character or story. The daring decision to have next to no intelligible dialogue throughout doesn't help matters, as the viewer is left to piece together the characters motives without explanation, but it's the score (the epitome of awful 80's synth soundtracks) more than anything else that dates the film and hindered this viewers enjoyment. While still worth checking out for any fans of Besson, the post-apocalyptic genre and cinema in general, it's not the easiest of films to watch, but one that rewards the viewer in spades through Besson's fantastic direction.

This may be one of the dumbest posts I've ever made (and that's saying something); but I'm currently watching Night of the Hunter on blu-ray, and I swear, the BIG EVIL RIFF that plays throughout the film was stolen almost directly and inserted into Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver.
