Are you sure about the second set of exiles ? Pulstar (1995) was developed before Metal Slug (1996).

Ah OK I get it :D So metal slug is most likely from the GeoStorm team and,
Last Resort, Pulstar & Blazing Star are from the "r-type" team ?

It probably isn't that clear cut. Irem also did a golf game called Major Title and Nazca actually started out with Big Tournament Golf, which could definitely be considered a pseudo-sequel to Major Title.

The Nazca team existed around since the release of Air Raid and Gunforce (Hiyamuta did the OSTs for those.) Their titles included the aforementioned two along with Gallop, In The Hunt, Undercover Cops, and Geostorm. There probably was cooperation/bleedover between the shooter team and the "general game" Nazca team during some projects, like R-Type Leo.

Casey Kasem backed out when he saw a Dooyong game in the top 40, so it's all me.

Both of these are far more important than Darius Gaiden.

I think I've spent more time playing good games this week instead of Darius Gaiden.

I think Darius Gaiden is a pretty good game. It just sucks for score competition.

This is Casey Kasem filling in for Rob while he's "playing Darius Gaiden." Coming in at lucky number 11!:

#11 Hyper Duel (Technosoft, 1993)
ImageImageImage
A game mentioned as a strong contender in the "worst scoring system" thread and here it is: your score constantly rises as you don't move. I've joked about seeing how few movements it took to clear Cerberus in Thunder Force III. Technosoft raised that challenge for this game. It is a scoring system which, if they actually designed the game around it, would make the game a complete failure. A game where you barely have to move? Pass. Luckily it turns out that this idea was just bizarre, lazy and stupid, with only a few sections truly embracing the pro-motionless scoring system (center screen: stage 2 boss with its 100% destructible bullets, point-and-shoot). While not quite at a typical arcade level the game gets about as challenging as Technosoft's best console shooter, Thunder Force IV, later in the game. Switching between ship and robot is similar to switching weapons in TF (with less filler), the game as a whole feeling little different from their early 90s prime.

#10 The Game Paradise (Jaleco, 1995)
ImageImageImageImage
Game with a cute/parody theme that is actually entertaining. Aside from the background graphics and the few clever attacks this is basically like an early Psikyo game with more bonus (score) items. Worth playing at least once.

Game Tengoku only at #10? You're on crack man, Game Tengoku freaking rules. Probably not top 5 material... but #10 seems a bit harsh.

#9 Mystic Riders (Irem, 1992)
ImageImageImage
Magical Night Bio Metal. Not as cool as Bio Metal, but it came first and has nearly the same shielding mechanism. Shoot a large circular attack in eight directions to clear bullets and do damage. You can't do as much with it and there is no charge bar to restrict its use. Collect red gems for power ups and bonus points, with plenty hidden or within enemies and treasure chests stretched across multiple screens.
Probably not top 5 material... but #10 seems a bit harsh.
So I was a few places off getting it just right, then?

Just wanted to say how much I've truly enjoyed reading this thread so far, it's hands down one of the very best things I've ever seen on the forum. Nice one.

(Also very cool to see Last Resort and Game Paradise being mentioned here, I absolutely love 'em both to death.)

Yeah... Basically ^_^ I just hadn't complained about any of your rankings yet as I haven't actually played... well... any of them. Figured I'd at least TRY to chime in on SOMETHING =/

#8 Blaze On (Atlas, 1992)
ImageImageImage
The first time I played this game was the SNES port, which on the surface looks the same but is crippled by insane flaws like a total of 45 seconds of completely dead space before the second boss. Blaze On is still an epically slow-paced side scrolling shooter of the type I associate most with 16-bit consoles, though never with that total disregard for playability. Now I can enjoy what was good about the game: "capturing" a variety of enemy robots and at least one smaller ship. Each has their own unique abilities (bombs, movable options, temporary invincibility, etc.), various other attributes to consider and are often located where you need them within the stage.

Thank you. I haven't seen this game in many, many years. I remember playing it in a small local pizza shop when I was a kid. I now must play it again.
