You know, I did have a dream some months ago that the X-02 Wyvern from Ace Combat appeared as a guest fighter in this game... looks like this is the Raiden universe equivalent
Despatche wrote:This game is looking to be really weird. What appears to be weapon switching, Flash Shot leveling, replacing lives with a shield (will it be Guwange-style or Esp-style?), a RADAR, weird social features... February 25, 2016. Here's another reason to get the Xbox One that I don't really want.
HydrogLox wrote:Is it just me or did they ditch the whole 3D/Zaxxon/Viewpoint thing and just went (rather quickly) with Raiden IV+ (probably for the better...)?
Those were just renders, probably cutscenes.
You bring up a good point. Hopefully it's just an extra mode with the shield mechanic.

By the way, is there any word on who composed the music this time? Is it Go Sato or someone else?

Interesting. From what little I've heard of Caladrius' music, I expect great things from Raiden V's soundtrack :P

It's logical to support cross platorm and/or whatever platform releases the most shmups in the present time, never mind what happened early last gen.

Support the releases while they happen or we won't have the luxury in the future.
If every single XB1 owner in Japan buys this (which is obviously never going to happen) they'll sell 60k copies. That's all, it's simple numbers, niche titles are doomed on that system in Japan.

Why should we support a system that is already dead? If they want to be idiots and release it on a dead system and put themselves out of business that doesn't fall on us.

I'm not going to support their idiotic decisions and buy a system with no future for 1 game. It reminds me of the people that blindly followed HD-DVD into it's grave and refused to see the writing on the wall.

Did the Xbone even hit 60k in Japan yet? Weekly sales dropped down to 100 units some time ago if I recall correctly.

November 22nd they hit 60,635 total sales since launch while PS4 stands at 2,035,001.

60k would be absolutely incredible for a full-priced shmup, though. Raiden IV sold 3000 copies in its opening week, and gamedatamuseum has it at 6000 lifetime - two numbers that are hardly unachievable on the Bone.

Raiden IV only sold 6K copies? Why in the hell would they ever finance a sequel for a complete flop and financial disaster like that? That can't be accurate.

Don't trust sales data that didn't come from an official financial briefing.

Because it's the only system which is actively supporting the hobby we are supposed to enjoy. The system isn't dead in the US or UK.

For all of the millions of PS3's out there last generation the highest selling shmup title on the PS3 sold around 18k units. All the talk of hardware units in Japan are absolutely irrelevent if the title has a chance of hitting digitally in the west too.

Equating the Xbox One to a HD-DVD is just moronic.

How about PC?
If watching the trailer of the game
makes you feel a certain way
I would be very happy if
you would give the game a try

Lol @ Xbox being the only system that is supporting this hobby. What a joke that is. There are currently ZERO shmups on that platform. The future of shmups is the PC, not the fucking Xbox One.

Just because the 360 had some shmup support does not mean the Xbox One will. The 360 was actually a mild success in Japan, the Xbox One is a historic flop and commercial disaster. They are nothing alike.

I've missed out... fill me in.
Damn Tim, you know there are quite a few Americans out there who still lives in tents due to this shitty economy, and you're dropping loads on a single game which only last 20 min. Do you think it's fair? How much did you spend this time?

I'm definitely buying this physical release. I don't own an Xbox One currently, but if Dragon Scale is halfway decent, I'll pick up a used console from Gamestop or a member of this forum. Until then I'll play it on someone else's console.

The stuff around the game looks cool and all, but how much of it is actually useful? The aspect ratio seems weird to me, too.

Those are Japanese retail sales (from Media Create, one of the two or three reliable sources). I'm sure it sold more through online shops (amazon etc) and downloads (if available), but shmups sell like garbage no matter what.

MS probably helped finance games like Raiden V & Natsuki Chronicles because they don't cost much to make and they wanted some exclusives. And they're probably hoping to sell them worldwide.

I've got faith this will hit other systems in one form or another eventually, and I'll be right there with money in hand when that happens. For those with reasons to own an XB1 though glad you guys got some good news. That poster is cool as fuck, wonder where I could get a print of one of those?

I'm very pleased indeed. I knew MOSS would come through and deliver. Now, from what's been mentioned about the game having multiple storylines, who else thinks that it just means that it will have multiple courses like in DX? Because I doubt the game will even show story materials, cutscenes, or characters.
EDIT: http://raiden.mossjp.co.jp/raiden5/index.html
Site has been updated, and there is a tab that says "characters" but it's greyed out right now. Is this an attempt at explaining more of the story and adding depth to the Raiden universe?

Pilot artwork will be changed to look "body-positive" for the Western version, in order to score better reception from Kotaku:

But seriously, think about it. The "characters" tab can't possibly be for the aircraft, because there is a separate "machine" tab. I also examined one of the screenshots on there of the main menu and the first option clearly says "story mode".

Even if those numbers are true, the game likely sold better in other parts of the world, making up for it.

That said, some people in this thread are acting like Japan is the only region the Xbone is available. If any shooter is to be released outside of Japan, particularly the USA, it's Raiden. The name is still recognizable to a lot of long-time gamers here, unlike a lot of other recent shooter offerings.

And like everyone else said, Xbox is dead dead dead in Japan, and how popular it is in the rest of the world is irrelevant considering how unpopular this genre is outside of Japan. And as far as I know, PS4 is outselling Xbox everywhere anyway.
I really hate this dead console nonsense, Surely people who play this genre should be more intelligent than just supporting the console which currently leads in sales figures. The only thing that's achieved so far for Sony is complacency, Lack of investment in first party titles and an online network that's slow.

In the past there's been lots of declared dead consoles in Japan who had sales secondary to the market leader, Saturn, Dreamcast, 360 and they all ended up having a fantastic selection of games. Christ the Xbox One already has a much better choice of exclusives because they are playing catch up.

PS4 is outselling Xbox everywhere? So what, It matters for nothing in a genre as niche as this. The most important thing is the intent to get games out and actively support developers who are being offered a platform to continually make the games they want to make.

What the hell are you talking about?

The Saturn sold like 10 million consoles in Japan, it was never declared dead. Even the DC and 360 sold over a million. The Xbox One is at 60 THOUSAND. You realize how pathetic that is?

It matters because having a game come out and flopping miserably is not going to give them confidence in releasing it in other regions. Do we even know if it's going to be region locked or not?
