I've been really liking Gradius II FC lately. It's a shame this wasn't released in the West, as it's a hell of a good time - kind of a loose interpretation of the arcade game, and a blast to play on its own merits. Besides great renditions of the arcade tunes, there's several original tracks that really leap out. Stage 2's urgent BGM "Fortress" in particular demands be to blasted loud, especially with those thumping Hidenori Maezawa drums and explosions.

What's particularly cool is, all of the FC's original BGM now has an official release via Gradius Ultimate Collection, along with lots of other good home-exclusive Gradius music for Gameboy, MSX, SFC and so on.

There's also a rap version out there (for the credits).

Reposing this classic in time for the new short episode release (which also has some amazing music).

Fuckin' aces. Always such good music. Makes me wish I didn't shave off my ACTION MULLET last year. That thing fluttered in the wind like the finest lepidopteran. I was beautiful.

Getsu Fuuma Den ~ Iten Hadou Kagura

Nice doujin AST for this obscure Konami ARPG. First track is the best, a beautifully spare koto rendition of the attract theme. The magnificent, Magical Sound Shower-blagging overworld theme and sidescrolling BGMs get rumbling metal fronted by traditional Japanese instruments - great effect. Final boss BGM breaks out the mullets and synth organs for a blast of Falcom JDK-style power metal fury. Not as keen about the phat beatz applied to a couple tracks, notably the first-person maze theme, whose dark chiptune elegance helped sell me on the FC game. Also a shame the wonderful password entry BGM doesn't make an appearance in the brief runtime. Overall though, very good stuff!

One bad dude! Slices demons' faces in half on the boxart and doesn't etc etc. Wish he'd gotten more than just guest roles after his debut.

Awesome, awesome stuff. Currently listening at work while cleaning a 1984 IBM keyboard! Going in and out of Feudal Japan to 1984 America with corporate Oni businessmen. Criminal that I don't own this game!

Some musicians on that album have joined the JDK Band a few years ago and also worked on the Re:Birth albums. VGM metal <3

Ah, cool info! I should've looked into who was on the album... turns out it also shares personnel with Xanadu KLEENE, another great doujin metal AST.

I'm completely in love with Yasuhito Saito's music. It's a shame Data West never released any of his soundtracks.

I love this track from ESP Ra.De. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f46LchO1f9U It has that awesome vibe that kind of makes it sound like something taken from Kamui. 8)

When I find myself enjoying a song in a shmup enough to bother looking it up, Manabu Namiki is usually the common denominator.

I suppose that's probably a pretty banal thing to say around these parts though.
