Cross of Iron. Put off watching this for so long, finally sat down with it. No regrets, it's as bitter and bleak a depiction of war as I'd heard and the doomed Eastern Front setting is horribly immersive.

Would be kind of hard to miss Franco. Haven't seen the movie, but he's in the trailer.

Man, BIL, I've been putting that off forever myself. I kind of forgot it existed, to be honest. I've got a buddy who owns a copy, so I'll try and pick that up soon. Looks like the DVD is still kinda pricey on the used/new side, so that'll have to do for now. Kinda surprised I don't own all of Peckinpah's movies at this point--except Convoy. Goddammit, I hate Convoy.

Somebody apparently doesn't know about a certain movie from 1966.
Just today I read a rant about people just calling the new film Django because they don't know Corbucci's classic even existed!

Oops...apparently I was one of these people. I've been learned.

Recommended! I'm gonna rewatch it before long, there was only so much I could absorb on a first viewing while constantly wondering who'd be alive in five minutes' time. Very fraught movie, with no scene safe from shellings and surprise attacks. It's actually fairly action-heavy, and James Coburn's Steiner is a strong protagonist, but the air of futility totally kills any notion of an action movie in WWII clothing ala Where Eagles Dare.

UFO (2012) - 3/10

Low budget nonsensical mess of a film. I have no idea how it even ended. I'd give it 1/10 were it not for some of the actors doing a decent job.

On Her Majesty's Secret Service (1969) - hadn't seen this for twenty years. Proper Bond. Allegedly, ex male model Lazenby rejected a contract requiring him to play the character six more times following his debut. Think he returned to modelling y-fronts instead. Makes you wonder how things could have panned out otherwise.

Okay...haven't yacked in here about crap I've watched recently. Time for an overload. I'll avoid reviews on "classics" to avoid a text wall, unless I hated it or was blown away or whatever.

Arizona Colt (aka, The Man From Nowhere '66) - Pretty crap Giulliano Gemma spaghetti western that is often hailed as a lost classic amongst some die-hards. Odd, for the acclaim seems to be torn, as another bunch of folks think it's pretty much crap, much like myself. Overly long with very little gunplay and plot; plus, it's one of those westerns that tries to implement comedy into the routine, ruining any merit whatsoever. Avoid.

Vampyres - Sexy vampire erotica set in a castle (that isn't Jean Rollin.) Two sexy vampire broads lure unsuspecting men into their lair to screw them and drink their blood. Lots of lesbian softcore. The entire film kinda has a dreamy, creepy feel that works for me, although most would probably find it boring.

Cool Hand Luke - I dig, although I'm not sure how I feel about the religious imagery intentions.

Desert Heat - Jean Claude Van-Damme Yojimbo remake. One of my new favorite Van Damme flicks. Lots of action, flesh, recognizable faces and motorcycle/wolf montages.

The Beast Must Die - Amicus production about a bunch of yuppies stuck in a mansion--although one of them is a werewolf. Despite starring Peter Cushing, it's a pretty bland affair. Crap ending, fairly boring, and probably one of the worst werewolves I've ever seen. Towards the end of the Amicus golden years, so it really only makes sense, I suppose.

Miami Connection - The "lost" action film that only recently resurfaced. Pretty fun, although extremely low budget and low on gunplay. Doesn't hurt that my action movie aficionado buddy praised it a little too highly before watching. Still, a fun film with lots of heart, and definitely worth seeing for action fans.

She Killed in Ecstasy - One of Jess Franco's bigger films. Psychedelic erotica with a groovy soundtrack. Opening montage is of a bunch of fetuses in jars, so only positive things are bound to happen. Revenge.

The Last Unicorn - Lots of fans on the forum, but I sadly have to say I didn't really enjoy it. Fluid, pleasing animation, but I found the majority of characters and voice actors almost unbearable. :(

Django the Bastard (aka The Stranger's Gundown) - One of the 30+ Django knock-offs, although this one is kind of on the moody, gothic side. Imagine Clint Eastwood's High Plains Drifter or Pale Rider. A mysterious stranger comes into town for revenge. He seems to come from nowhere, disappear at times, and almost seems invincible. Interesting back story, some good gunplay, and a moody setting make it all worth while for the lackluster ending.

Still have a lot to go. This shall do for now.

Just as well cos it's a crap film and he's the shittiest actor who ever played the role.

Blade of Kings. Good action, good acting, special effects that worked nicely and comedy that didn't feel tacked on. The vibrant colors I liked the most. Also saw th muppets. hope there's more movies to come. had me laughing a lot.

I wanted to like Miami Connection. I really did.

But it was just... bad. Hilariously bad at times, but mostly bad.

+
Great music(vocal and score)
Nostalgia city in terms of 80s sights & sounds
Some cool fights
"Boss. Everyone is dead!" "[head slice] AHAHAHAHAHA"
"My father! I found my father! Oh my god!"

-
Horrible acting ("Now you are my friends too" [deadpan])
"Stand there and let me hit you" fights
Some of the most random jump-cuts ever.

That said, the story of how H.K. Kim made the film is damn inspirational, if extremely sad that he spent so much time and effort on a horrible film.

Got around to Willow.

Damn, I enjoyed. Gave me a real old-school fantasy buzz. James Horner's score is superb, those themes they used to come up with. :)

After fifteen minutes I thought it was going to be crappy, since I hadn't seen it in a long time. Just a bunch of midgets in a mud field. But as soon as Val Kilmer turned up in a gibet, it picked right up. He was the best thing in it, clearly (top billing), but the dynamic of characters, non-stop variety of locations and set-pieces, dazzling scenery and neat effects, and even the dumb humour managed to overshadow some half-baked scripting, clunky acting and terribad accents (I couldn't tell what Warwick Davies was trying to be, but his American blows.)

In the end, good, imaginative gung-ho fun. I didn't realise Moebius was a conceptual artist until the credits, either.

Trolls, castles, monsters, swordsmen, viking looking dudes, a badass skeletor motherfucker who took three swords and kept fighting, and an entire army turned into pigs.

Awesome.

Bring on Conan.

You might have lost the right to criticize other shit here. Just maybe. I haven't seen Willow since it came out, but don't remember it being all that good. Better than Legend and Krull, but this isn't saying much. That said, the universal opinion on this forum seems to be that Labyrinth is better than Dark Crystal which only confirms my belief that most of your Shmup high scores are coke fueled. I suppose one of you clowns is gonna 'rediscover' Hook next. jesusfuckingchrist

Might agree with you on the Horner score, and I loved his soundtracks at the time, but he was too derivative of himself, and if you knew your classical music, you could catch him ripping off a ton of other stuff. Oh, and of course Horner doesn't even exist without Prokofeiv, but I meant pre-20th century classical. Still, Goldsmith is the BEAST of this period, something I didn't come to appreciate until later.

Haha, yep. I love Jean Rollin's style. Definitely fine with any fantastique sexy business. Been wanting to see Grapes of Death for ages now. I actually sold my copy of Daughters of Darkness a few years ago when I was low on cash. I should probably pick that up again if I've got any sense in me.

Skeletor motherfucker was named after the great film critic Pauline Kael, who routinely bashed Lucas' script-writing and pacing incompetence in his movies (back when his movies were good!).

She was mildly amused at the character of "Kael."

I saw Assault on Precinct 13 last night with buddies. Sort of an abrupt ending (fuckin' cholos man), but hot damn, it was a good time. Great Carpenter tension with shotgun bursts of action.

Man on fire - Bland. A friend of mine promoted it heavily. First part was really boring, tough guy befriends child blablabla. Second part was ok, although repetitive. Denzel kills a few guys followed by a slow scene with Enya-like music.

Star Trek II: Wrath of khan - Just as good as I'd hoped, could have done without Kirstie alley though.

It's not a good film. Everyone crows on about Man on Fire like it's some kind of masterwork: I watched it and felt the same as you. Dull, boring, aimless. Scott's done much better no-brainers/feature length music videos.
You might have lost the right to criticize other shit here. Just maybe.
Why? I already covered its flaws. I didn't say it was a masterpiece of cinema, but we both enjoyed Krull and it falls into a similar category of film. Only difference is Willow has much higher production values and is a tad more concise, and as a result slightly more entertaining.

I suggest you revisit it. Age, nostalgia, and the simple fact that this type of movie (creative, imaginative, varied, fun, adventurous etc) don't really exist anymore will probably improve it in your eyes, as it did me. It's for kids, ultimately, but no more than Indy Jones. The derivative comedy and some crappy acting/scripting don't do anything for it, but Ron Howard and Lucas still managed to pull together an enjoyable fantasy yarn with more than a hint of Tolkien plagiarism.
I haven't seen Willow since it came out, but don't remember it being all that good.
Me either. As I said, 15 minutes went by and I almost canned it, but it wakes up all of a sudden. Not as bad as you remember, I'd wager, you just have to clear the opening act.
That said, the universal opinion on this forum seems to be that Labyrinth is better than Dark Crystal which only confirms my belief that most of your Shmup high scores are coke fueled.
Dude, Willow's better than Dark Crystal.

It's a superb composition. True pointless story: the theme for this film has been rolling around my head for years. I had no idea it was from Willow, since it's been an eternity since I've seen it - I thought it was from the Goonies or something. Also, Horner robbed a classical piece for Willow's theme, afaik - but it's the hero theme that I like best.

Watched Salo or the Last 120 Days of Sodom with some friends last night. It was....... something. Not exactly a good movie, but intriguing in it's bizarre-ness. Certainly not a bad pickup for a $10 criterion Blu-Ray, but I doubt I'll watch it again.
