What [not shmup] game are you playing now?

Anything from run & guns to modern RPGs, what else do you play?

Thanks man. So glad I'm done with it.

Gave Umihara Kawase another go. Turns out my emulator was running the game at half speed, no wonder I was finding it so slow. Now it's much more enjoyable - and difficult. I'll have to re-learn everything, I can't pull off the tricks I was doing before.

The soundtrack is lovely. Will probably add one of the tracks to my ringtone list.

Well, the Saturn port of Virtua Racing certainly hasn't.

My brother and I consider that the so-bad-it's-laughable game in my library. Something about the less-than-2-second music clips blaring, then immediately fading to silence, followed by silence, and terrible, horrific controls makes the game a total piss-poor joy to play.

32X VRDX is very decent, and would be a must-own if not for the fact you need a certain miserable plastic mushroom to run it. Not really the sort of thing I associate with CHQ's super-scaler style racing, though.

Donkey Kong Country 3 on my old Super Nintendo. The console works as well as the day I bought it a long, long time ago.

VRDX is the definitive home version of Virtua Racing to me. VR on the Saturn is just... ehhhhhhhhhh, and VR on the PS2 has a few stupid issues with collision [it is fucking pretty though]. VR Genesis is comparable, but is visually inferior.

It's still Virtua Racing, so the music fades out after a few seconds, although if you're doing it right, you'll barely notice it [the music clips are a somewhat good indicator of how long it should take for you to reach the next checkpoint for the most part].

That miserable plastic mushroom is only miserable due to the retarded cabling setup. There are quite a few good games on it.

The only other game I found interesting was Shadow Squadron, but I'd rather get the Saturn remake if at all. I actually still have my 32X with VRDX its lone game. Already have the Saturn and PS2 versions of After Burner II and Space Harrier, respectively.

Found the Zork trilogy on Newgrounds and started playing it recently. It's really brutal with navigation and inventory management and is filled with some obscure puzzles and a lot of annoying bullshit but it does have its moments.

Having a lot of fun with Risen 2 despite its shortcomings. While initially the exploration isn't that great, being able to visit several islands somewhat solves that problem. Patched combat can be fun, though most monsters are quite easy in one-on-one combat since doing one or two hits and then kicking takes care of most medium / small enemies. Not a fan of the stacked commands, since you need no timing for chained attacks. At least it isn't as easy as Risen 1 where you can block everything all the time.

All the new stuff you can do is pretty fun, too. Shooting, dirty tricks, the thieving abilities (especially the monkey, too bad you don't get to use it that much), treasure hunting, all the monster variety (one of the weakest aspects of the first game), being able to have AI controlled partners... with some more polish it would be excellent.

Ah Zork, the wonderful game that made me always be afraid of Grues. It is quite brutal to navigate, but it has such charm.

Further into Metroid Prime (Wii), found the Truth artifact, but still have mixed feelings. I'm like "where is Samus Aran?" The game even shows her now and then, but the human factor seems latent. I found Unreal more emotive from the start. At least the music in Prime reminds me of life.

Skyrim (360) - Still in the starter quests (clvl 11), but I'm already getting kind of bored. The character I'm building is a stealthy archer from afar, and destruction mage up close. I've hit maybe 6 dungeons so far, and they've been of exactly two types - crypt & stronghold. Combat just isn't really that compelling.

My MO is: sneak and shoot for bonus damage, keep shooting until they get close, then break out the destruction magic. On Expert Difficulty I'm dying fairly regularly, but it feels more like game imbalance than lack of skill. I'm simply outclassed by high level bandits. To get over these various humps I just use up a bunch of potions to poison enemies or bolster PC attributes.

Bleh.

Maybe I should join some guilds to make things more interesting?

Heh, I had a hunch that the same person worked on Excite Truck and Metroid Prime soundtracks. Yay!
Man, what is with those FPP silent protagonists being fabled redeemers? H-L, Prime... Is it some North American generic idea of the most badass action game hero that can be? But Garret of Thief isn't the type (he's not silent, though). Then again, the playable character of Unreal is silent, but seems human (frail) alright. Nevertheless, this messianic trait seems distinctly... American to me.

I've spent way too much time on this one myself. Not particularly deep, but pretty good as a timewaster, and Halfbrick has done a pretty good job of keeping it reasonably fresh.

MS App Store? For pay?

I wish they'd just put it on a webpage like they did Monster Dash.

Virtual On: Oratorio Tangram [DC]. That midboss tripped me up a bunch, even though I ripped through all the normal VRs, and then somehow I forgot how to beat Tangram and timed out. You don't even get to enter your time like VOOM... :(

Oh, and I spent like 2 hours playing in practice mode, doing random stage and both VRs with VS CPU on. Grys-Vok is my favorite VOOT VR, very nice combination of speed [not amazing, but his dash feels good] and attack [I adore that crouch+start nuke he uses, so coooool].
I miss Viper II from VOOM, Cypher feels weird and his homing shot isn't nearly as good as before, coupled with things like watari dashing ensuring it never hits [watari dash away, watch homing shot stop homing and veer off]. Oh, and SLC isn't amazing anymore [non-homing], even though it's still pretty okay.

Currently alternating between Mystery of Atlantis, Devil Hunter Yohko and Shadow Blasters. The first two are a lot of fun and I'd strongly recommend them but I can't really explain why I'm enjoying anything but the music from Shadow Blasters. Guilty pleasure to the extremeeeee...

Random platformers with friends:

hagane - only played a little, but will definitely be revisiting this

DKC3 - way too many gimmicky stages, subpar art design, less atmosphere overall. 'tis the dreggish vapors of the first two...

Psycho Dream - awesome music, great art, "kind of ok" platforming, wtf last boss?

Chippoke Ralph - sooo good. up til 4:30am last night with a friend playing this one

Does Psycho Dream not work at all properly on ZSNES? I decided to try it out after my curiosity finally piqued and I was immediately shot down by the sound being all fucked up for every ROM I tried. Ugh, annoying.

ZSNES is shit. Use BSNES, or if you don't have a good enough computer for that, use SNES9x.

Yeah, I was aware of that from the start. At least the problem with SNES9x which made me switch from the start is gone. (Running far too fast to be remotely playable)
