This depends on which sources you happen to consider canon.

There's the cliché and dumb stories where Dent's brain is broken by some mild scarring on his face. Those have always been a cartoon fantasy narrative.

Then there's the much more realistic ones where the "evil" personality was his true nature all along - it was just easily surpressed by the fact he was good lucking, had a lot of money, had a hot lady friend, and was socially respected. (This is also true of the main character of It's a Wonderful Life. The whole moral of that story: if you're rich and respected and have a hot wife, then you really shouldn't kill yourself. If you don't have those things, well, then it's o-k to kill yourself.)

So the choice of evil, in this framing, is between a psycho who is evil for fun, and a sociopath who is evil for profit. Each has its ups and downs.

The polls close in Florida at 7 pm Central. The hour after that will be sphincter tightening - If Clinton wins Florida, she's won. If Trump wins Florida, North Carolina, and New Hampshire, he's won.

End result, people suffer, cultures are destroyed. Why is one of those evil, but the other an example of high morality?
