How many bullets are onscreen at once.

You'll notice a considerable difference in bullet density with boss attacks if you approach them at varying stages of power-up - if you haven't died prior.

By that I mean that Darius Gaiden's rank only goes up, and there is no way to lower it. Some people try to control the rank by keeping themselves underpowered throughout the game - this can be easily seen on Golden Ogre if you skip the final red-powerup, or King Fossil if you avoid getting the wave upgrade.

Often though, it's more trouble than it's worth. 8)

That's the reason the thread exists.

Feel free to bump any thread, no matter how old, as long as it's relevant to the topic. Saves forum bandwidth, makes for a tidy home.
This thread ought to just be stickied...
Shmups forum mods hate stickies. Don't know why, but they're super rare. The same thread as this one should be stickied in the Hardware section too, but it just floats up and down a lot.

If you pull the headphone plug out of the output slightly, you'll get MONO sound (both channels on top of each other). Not what you were looking for, but a "quick and dirty fix".

Is it just me or Cotton 2's player hitbox is too awfully big?

I mean... despite the relative few amount of enemies and bullets on screen, I still have a hard time to avoid them, thanks to the hitbox's size that doesn't help.

Are there any problems with acheivements on X360 Akai Katana? I play Climax, and although I've reached the last stage, I seem to have nothing listed past ST2. Not overly arsed, just wondered if there's a bug or it only counts them for one mode in particular?

I think you can't obtain achievements in Climax mode at all (and some have to be unlocked in Slash mode/can't be obtained on novice)

Regarding the Touhou games.. how do people usually set up their controls? The game doesn't detect my TE stick natively. I tried Xpadder, but mapping my stick to the arrow keys feels like crap...

Does the TE have a switch to swap the stick to emulate the xbox control stick? If so you should try that as I think touhou supports directinput (but probably only for control sticks not dpad as desired).

Yeah it doesn't register at all, unfortunately. Thanks for confirming it uses DirectInput, though. I tried my 360 controller and it works. It may have something to do with always looking for the 360 controller instead, since I noticed my fight stick is registered as Joy 1 and not Joy 0 in MAME, even if I unplug them both and plug my stick back in and it registers as controller "1" on the Xbox guide button. Oh well, I'll play with it :)

Another random question.. do the Japanese 360 shmups typically have the tate mode/display rotation option in the menu? I just got a stand to be able to do that with my monitor and it's great! I typically play on PC, but I've been making use of Raiden IV's screen rotation option and I'm wondering if it's worth getting some of these other games for 360.

Yes. As with the Saturn, it's actually hard to think of 360 verts that don't have tate. At least retail releases (I'm not as familiar with XBLA stuff).

More strange Garegga glitchiness... (this happened to me in ShmupMAME 3b and I did not use any savestates or any other tool-assisted stuff)

I had just defeated the Stage 2 boss and when he was about to exit the screen and Stage 3 was about to start, a small tank appeared on the bottom of the screen and I was stuck on Stage 2 :/ This tank couldn't be destroyed (I assume that's because he was slightly off the screen). After a while the tank started moving to the left (at that point, the background had stopped scrolling as well) until he had exited the screen and I was stuck in a state where I couldn't do anything but restart the game. Has anyone experienced this before?! :/

Image Image Image Image

EDIT: After a good while (15 mins or so) the tank appeared again (entering the screen from the left side...) and after a while he started moving to the left again. 15 mins after that he entered the screen again but this time from the right side...

So now that Siter Skain have posted their old games for download, I'm hoping someone can tell me how to run Raid Wind in Anex. Typically the games I've seen come in .fdi or .hdi formats, so I'm not sure how to handle the files they've posted.

I experienced that same glitch on a PCB not too long ago. I thought it might have to do with the zakk hack roms, but I guess it's just a bug in the code.

Is the Raiden IV 360 port rendered in full HD when tated, or is it like the Ikaruga port where they just scale the already-rendered display?

Yeah it should, I managed to get to it once on the iOS version at least. I remember clearing, then the ending seemed different for some reason, then "oh shit I got the second loop?!"

It does, but for some reason, the last patch they put out made it impossible to access the hidden route in the first stage, making it impossible to get to the Ura loop. Which sucks all kinds of ass.

But you can still get the Omote loop by collecting 35 bees. :V

The main site should have all the official releases and then there are some homebrews.

From the Glossary: Caravan Mode: “Umbrella” term which can be used to denote both Score Attack and Time Attack modes. Originates from a group of Compile-developed shooters (Super Star Soldier and Final Soldier, among others) which both included such modes as extras alongside the “regular” games and released them alone, in limited quantities, as “Caravan” editions.

So basically, you have a limited amount of time, often just two or five minutes, to score as much as possible.

We also have a high-score thread I've shamefully been neglecting for such games.

Does anyone know what the purpose of the different Complete Codes you see when you clear a difficulty of Judgment SilverSword were for?

hail good sir wrote:Does the gamecube version of Ikaruga have practice mode shortcuts to specific points in the stage? And since I would be using it to practice for the 360 version, are there any inconsistencies worth knowing about going from one (at least from what I've heard) slightly screwy version to another slightly screwy version?

I'm really only interested in ch2 bonus columns at the end (but starting from the generators), ch3 bonus balls at the end, and ch3 up/down ships (that tunnel where white comes from the top and black from the bottom.)
Afaik it does. I remember it having two different practice modes in the game.

I don't know all the differences off the top of my head, but I know for sure that the stage 3 midboss thing spins the opposite way in the xbla version.

Apparently it's called conquest mode and you can play in slow mo which might be interesting for wrapping my head around parts I can't do well. It's all so cheap now I'm going for it. Hopefully the gamecube dpad doesn't suck I can't remember the last time I used one.
I was about to say it was useless cause the laser state...but apparently I already did there long ago. I haven't messed with the 360 one much but I think it might let you set the laser level? If so it'd help immensely, at least if you're getting into sections with relatively consistent laser state going into them (if you're use them for chaining in the first place).

I posted this in another section a while ago but am curious if anyone has any ideas as to what the two
lines of text actually mean on the bottom of the title screen?

thanks :D
