Throne of Blood is probably my favourite Kurosawa movie. Seven Samurai is a quality piece of work though.

I liked it. Seemed a bit more "tame" than the previous movies, but I still couldn't stop laughing most of the movie. Good to just sit down and enjoy some lowbrow humor once in a while IMO.

Way of the Dragon, the extended full cut. Pretty awesome stuff. Back before Chuck Norris was a joke. Bruce was insane.

Just watched Anderson's Darjeeling Limited. Really well produced and executed, but in general left me a bit cold. As much as I enjoy this guy's films (really loved Life Aquatic and Fantastic Mr. Fox, which I know pisses all the hardcore Anderson fans off who only love rushmore and tennumbaums), I think I lack the ability to fully appreciate the family relationships he is always exploring due to being a single child. I still have family problems, and maybe that's why I do find myself liking his films, but there are points I can see where Anderson is going, even appreicate it, but just don't always feel it.

Alright, random thoughts.

-I didn't like Life Aquatic, and felt it shared quite a bit with Darjeeling. I felt exactly the way you did towards the latter; indifference. Quite "glossy", Anderson-esque enough in the details, overall storytelling and production values, yet not as deep/rich as Tenenbaums, where everything comes together perfectly.

-Didn't know about Criterion releasing Night of the Hunter... underappreciated classic.

-I watched Double Indemnity (1944) yesterday night. I haven't seen a movie this good since... last summer, when I watched The White Ribbon. Quite gritty, well-paced and overall excellent acting performances. Very entertaining, too. On par with other noirs of that time, stuff like The Third Man or The Maltese Falcon come to mind. Mostly the Third Man, the more I think about it.

-Side note, I've been quite out of the loop releases-wise, but I've been meaning to see The Secret in Their Eyes, being a fan Campanella (mostly Son of the Bride, exceptionally moving) and Ricardo Darín in general. If you've seen Nine Queens, you know what I mean. Anyways, I don't even know if El secreto... is out or anything. It's on my list of must sees in a near future. Has anyone watched this? Is this out?

This is my first movie post here, but I've been watching quite a few movies lately so I though I'd share my options/random ratings on some of them.

- "Big Trouble in Little China" I watched this in at a local volunteer run movie theater here in Seattle. It was my first time watching it and I enjoyed it quite a bit. I think watching it in a theater with a large group of people made my experience more enjoyable. Most people were laughing throughout the film which created a festive environment that fit the movie well. That and Kurt Russell is the man. 6/10

- "Four Lions" The same theater actually had a free showing of this a few days ago. I didn't know much about the film going into it but ended up being quite impressed. I really enjoyed a few of the characters and the film turned out to be deeper and more complex then I imagined it would be. 7/10

- "Machete" I had extremely high expectations of this film going into it, which is always a little unfair to do to a film. It didn't quite meet my expectations, but overall I enjoyed it. There were some amazing scenes (I nearly fell out of my seat laughing during the hospital scene) and I love Robert Rodriguez's constant use of attractive naked women. However I thought the film dragged on a bit towards the end. 8/10

YOU CANT GIVE BIG TROUBLE 6 OUT OF 10
WE SHOULD BRUN THIS WITCH AT THE STEAK

I also watched 3 lions and enjoyed it even tho the end was quite sad.

i also watched psychos in love which was a very enjoyable tounge in cheek slasher/comedy crossbreed about 2 serial killers who fall in love due to a mutual hatred of grapes. It was a definite surprise for me how fun to watch it was and i'd imagine most long term horror/gore fans would deffo get a kick out of it.

That's still an understatement.. it's more like 13/10!

Recently I somehow ended up seeing four films about Serbia in cinemas:

A Serbian Film - Even with all the massive hype surrounding it, ASF succeeded in delivering a super strong punch. Very well-crafted movie. Known to cause viewers to faint.
Life And Death of a Porno Gang - Mostly a (funny!) comedy, but somehow manages to exceed even A Serbian Film in some sectors of graphic sickness
Caged - Serbians capture aid workers and do nasty things. For the fans of Hostel, Turistas etc.
Human Zoo - A film by the danish model Rie Rasmussen, about serbian mafiosos going apeshit elsewhere in Europe. For the fans of Natural Born Killers.

Serbians = new nazis of the silver screen?

Oh yeah and "Due Date" - Quite ok, but not nearly as funny as Hangover. Best scene happens in a drug den run by Juliette Lewis, who asks Robert Downey Jr. to watch over her kids... bad idea :D
Before Pope John Paul died he decreed that Aliens were also GOD's creatures and we should treat them with respect.

KindGrind> Nice post. Regarding Anderson, I have to say that I'm glad he's made a lot of different films, even if they all seem very similar for precisely the reason suggested by our conflicting posts. I've seen most of his films now, and they're mostly dealing with the same themes (even Fantastic Mr. Fox), but somehow, a few of them really work for me, and others don't connect. Among fans I've seen a lot of debate over the matter, but it isn't like any of his films are poorly made--if anything, his production is consistantly very high, the acting good, the dialoge well thought out. He's one of the few directors where I find it hard to argue any of his films being better than the others, being that the ones you enjoy the most seem to reflect something more about yourself than the film in question.

Just saw House (the Japanese movie, not the TV series.) I'm not going to write much about it now, but holy fucking shit! It's a truly goofy, surreal, at times seemingly throw-away film, but behind all that stuff is some pointed experimentism and a clear rejection of hollywood (and Japanese) realism. I'm still not even sure what I think about it, but it is one of the most original films I have ever seen--and that's worth something.

Oh, and the cat in the poster is meant to look (perhaps secretly) like an atomic explosion.

Is House worth a blind buy on blu?

I recently watched Beauty and the Beast, Back to the future 3 and Alien on blu ray.
This industry has become 2 dimensional as it transcended into a 3D world.

I just watched the Prophecy for the first time in awhile and it was just as good as I remember it. Viggo was a good choice for Lucifer. I also watched the Happiness of the Katakuris and it met all my expectations as to what a musical directed by Miike would be like. The stop motion in the first part of the movie is great.

That's really hard to answer. Except on the rarest ocasions I always get burned when I buy blind. That said, I think I will be purchasing this, but it would be very easy to walk away from this film and think it is trash. After watching the documentary about it, I feel a lot of what makes it important is its time and place and what what it was rebelling against. On the other hand, it is definitely a striking piece of cinema especially when you realize the film is not exactly meant to be a joke.

I watched 2009s Gamer which was better then i expected i suppose. For anyone who doesnt know about it, its a near future scifi where death row convicts are put into a real life version of counter strike with rich teenagers controlling their bodies. I had a laugh when i saw one combatant teabagging :)

this weekend i've been watching dodgy robert corman alien rip offs.both films have good sets and look but not so good casting or acting

forbidden world- my favourite of the 2 i watched.a mutant hybrid gets loose in a secret lab in space before mutating and killing nearly everyone. The hero was quite good in this and the alien was like a fat alien.

galaxy of terror-sets designed by john cameron :!: this film just didn't make sense really.it did have joanie from happy days in it tho and robert englund.pritty shitty but watchable sunday afternoon fare.

both films had scenes of alien raping women tho if that's your thing

The trailer is a pretty good representation of the movie, so if you like that you'll probably like the movie. It only had a DVD release in the UK unfortunately. Criterion have just released a blu-ray in the US, which I hear is a great-looking transfer, but it's locked to Region A only like all Criterion blu-rays.

Okay, a few from over the weekend;
First up, The Fist of the North Star, absolute classic, and one of the most bad ass stories on the planet. But, it's starting to show some age, the animation was very inconsistent, I can forgive some of the weird changes in size for the enemies, that was in the manga. The story line was absolutely mangled in the second half though, maybe it's time for a proper remake?
Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow, this movie was terrible. I though that the plane was cool looking, and maybe there would be some cool dogfighting. Nope. One of the worst script/delivery of said script I've seen in awhile. Really terrible. Dieselpunk my ass..
The Abyss, only really watched this 'cause of James Cameron has been down in the Marianna Trench (I think that's right, the deepest place in the ocean) filming Avatar 2. The scenes with the crane falling, and they were in jeopardy of being pulled into the trench were really cool/well done. The plot was a little overdone from the cold war. Was that the guy that played Kyle Reese as the villain? Fuckin cool to see that. The alien thing... Well, I can't help but think of the tie in to Avatar, but really.. Aliens? Looked neat for the time at least.
The Brave One, considered the female version of Death Wish. So much better IMO. The script is really, really well done. The perspective and understanding of a victim is rather well done in this. Jodie Foster was such a great casting for the lead, along with.. Crap, what's his name.. Guy that was in Hustle and Flow. Anyway, this is actually a pretty damn good film. Jodie Foster is a hottie in it also.

This past weekend my old lady and I got loaded and watched 2012. Utterly, utterly ludicrous. It reminded me of the War of the Worlds w/ Tom Cruise and how they always seemed to be at the worst possible place at every moment in the movie. It's like they came up with more and more ludicrous positions to put them in (the san andreas fault opening, a fucking super volcano) and wrote a script around it. At the end of the movie when the captain of the ship announced they were about to smash into the north face of Mt. Everest it made so much (non)sense. I mean, if humanity is on the brink of destruction, of course it's not going to be just any mountain they crash in to, it's going to be the biggest fucking mountain on earth.

The amazing part about 2012 is that it's over 2 and a half hours long. Someone pointed out that it's streaming on netflix so I stupidly went and watched it (of course, laughing my ass off the whole way.) Still, I'll never get that part of my life back.

streets of fire.amazing looking film by walter hill(of warriors fame)pretty much non stop entertainment from beginning to end and a good cast including william dafoe and rick moranis.

prey.very entertaining uk sci fi/horror. quite traditional but the lesbian couples unhealthy relationship adds some spice and weirdness to the proceedings. definitely gonna check some more of norman j warrens films after this. I think terror is meant to be his best but i have one called satans slave as well to check

men at work.emilio estevez and charlie sheen as bin men.whats more to say. the black vietnam vet supervisor is a hoot!

i watched a couple more things but they deffo going in the awesomely bad movie thread

the quiet earth.. very slow but atmospheric take on the last man on earth story.I liked the way it dealt with teh human characteristic traits such as mental ilness and jealousy when put in such a situation. No monsters or suchlike chasing the protagonists either just the loneliness of the situation and dealing with human emotion. If you like last man on earth type films you will deffo love this. Beautiful ambiguous ending as well.

watched RED and Paranormal Activity 2 last week.

RED was an entertaining action flick with lots of humor. Felt very 90s. Ex CIA guy was attempted murdered in his own home. He gets the old gang together and kills a million people while being badass and funny. After the movie I thought to myself, "whats up with all these old people returning to action movies?". Atleast it entertained me, and I almost couldn't recognise Richard Dreyfuss? Man has he put on a lot of weight...

Paranormal Activity 2. Loved the first one. Still on the top of my list as the movie that scared me the most (jumpscares excluded). More of the same but with a bigger budget. Feels like they went for the same sequence of effects but somehow fell short? also, they showed too much, if you catch my drift? Ending was perfect if it wasnt for the last five minutes. that really pissed me off, but my friend told me that it was because I watched the original ending and not the theatrical release of the first movie.
