Strategies need refining. -_-;;
Insane skills , congrats Icarus 8) - out of interest are you using a glue-on pad on the direction buttons of the DS, to make directional control more accurate?

Thanks

Unmodified DS fat d-pad.

Having bought a brand new USA region Onyx colored NDS-lite handheld just very recently, it uses the silent D-pad setup. Playing Ketsui Death Label with it, the diagonal movements are precise and sharp. Keep in mind that this is using the USA region NDS-lite handheld with production model number USG-001.

Battery life with a brand new NDS-lite battery pack is great and long lasting for those intense KDL gaming sessions. Of course, your mileage may vary if you are using an older original NDS or 1st-gen DS-lite battery setup. ^_~

Scoring breakdown of current Very Hard personal best (2.64bil ALL - Type B), with score and multiplier after defeating listed boss noted:

Code: Select all

Seahorse - 27.8mil (2918)
Bullfrog - 95.1mil (7071)
Jem & Eni - 194.7mil (10482)
Sphinx - 344.9mil (15778)
Vinogradov - 545.4mil (18865)
Jamadhar - 798.7mil (25294)
Black Draft - 1,090bil (29133)
C. Amber - 1,463bil (37242)
Trafalgar - 1,872bil (40865)
Evaccaneer - 1,872bil (45739) <-- no bonus, see note
DOOM
 - form 1 - 2,107bil (40125)
 - form 2 - 2,316bil (35818)
 - ALL Clear - 2,647bil (22134 final, 46926 highest) <-- one autobomb, one miss on final pattern
One thing to note, unlike the rest of the bosses, you get no bonus points for killing Evaccanner with any weapon, hence why my score at the end of the battle was nearly the same as the score at the start. Better to maintain the multiplier for the Doom battle.

And about the Doom battle: use lock-on to destroy all forms, as you get a huge amount of points from it if you have a big multiplier at this point.

Point blanking, utilising both shots, aggressive bomb use, not dying. And just generally being awesome 8)

I was pretty fed up with this game for maybe two weeks, especially from playing the very frustration Extra mode, but I picked it up tonight and I´m really starting to enjoy it again. Turns out that in order to score at least moderately well I really have to stop dying all over the place, so I´m slowly working my way up in training mode, training each boss at a time until I can survive as long as possible at least in the first half of Very Hard. At least I broke my "highest multiplier" in the record section, and I´m getting pretty consistent at Jamadhar, which used to be my absolute HATE boss :)

The downside is that the plastic on my white Lite is starting to get a nasty grey color around the d-pad and the buttons. My next model will be a black one, that´s for sure

A black colored DS is great to play with/own. Now only if I could find a matching black colored Taito DS Paddle controller for use with Space Invaders Extreme and Arkanoid games, that'd be awesome but they're sold out everywhere. Another produciton batch of them would make sense. ^_~

I got the multiplier up to 50,900 but died a few times at Doom. If only...

Icarus, do you want your score submitted in the hi-score thread?

What do you guys think of using both screens of the DS for a tated shmup? It would play just like those games that use both screens for the actual play, like Contra 4, Yoshi's Island DS, you get my point right?

I think it could be pretty good and I dont see way it hasn't been done yet.
Running, scrambling, flying
Rolling, turning, diving, going in again
Run, live to fly, fly to live, do or die
Run, live to fly, fly to live. aces high.

Would you want to play Garegga with a two-inch gap in the middle? I sure wouldn't.

Or imagine trying to track two rotating patterns of bullets that pass through the middle several times. No thanks.

Contra 4 suffered because of the gap, so would other games.

Best Demo Label ever! I´m at 25 hours right now.

I´ve put this down for maybe two weeks, but now I start to really enjoy the scoring system (including the "finish shot", which adds a nice element of timing to it), and training the harder bosses until you figured out a way to take them down conveniently with a proper bomb distribution is a lot of fun.

And what´s weird, I´m even enjoying this game more than when i first got it. I think that´s a sign of a good game - it gets better the more YOU get better. Extra mode, however, gets old very quickly, it´s nice to see that the bossrush concept works so well for this game (hey, it worked for Alien Soldier!).

Graphically I can't see Ikaruga being on the DS (or PSP for that matter; letterboxed 4:3 is ugly on the PSP and tate'd PSP DDP is awkward from what I've tried) unless it gets tremendously watered down. Which I can see happening, actually, but Treasure probably wouldn't allow it. There's also the issue of it being split in half which just adds even more confusion to what's already a pretty confusing game (at times).

I jus got this in the mail...only after which i realized i could have probably found it local at pink godzilla, generally very pleased with it, will have to do something about my ds lite dpad.

once I got to the part with the shooter-stage-like ships as a boss it fkn made me want Jpn 360 for when the true port comes out.. really nice.

I've had all I can stands, and I can't stands no more.

Restarting Extra every time I die early reminds me of all the 'fun' I had playing DOJ.

I hate Extra mode. There is just way to much shit flying across the screen, even the beginning is a pain with these annoying three-way suicide bullets and the ultra-dense spreads from the big helicopters that spawn in random places :x Adding to that, the missing vertical space and the small screen somehow really becomes a problem here.

I stopped playing it when I watched someone clearing it on Nico video and realized that I´m neither skilled enough to do it myself nor bored enough to torture myself with fighting the most pissed off DOOM in the whole game on a theoretical maximum of two lives.

I think it shows how well the rest of the game is made, because I´m still enjoying Very Hard and Death Label a lot. Yes, the screen is often covered in bullets here too, but I never completely lose orientation of what´s happening like in Extra mode, and I don´t feel like I have to press my nose against the small screen to see a two-pixel gap somewhere in a mess of bullets and enemies.

Some people might complain about shooters requiring memorization, but random placement definitely kills Extra for me as well. The rest of the game is incredibly fun and extremely addictive. I keep thinking I'm finished with it, and then somehow I find myself playing again two days later!

so now that Cave has developed this excellent set of code/tools/engine for the DS, who thinks they will continue to produce spinoff versions of their popular STG's? I sure do.

Danmaku on the DS is tolerable at best.

Their time would be better spent elsewhere.

I don't think Cave did anything. Arika did.
