That 8-bit stylized tie looks quite spiffy and dignified on you, Jockel. What website sells them btw? Cool find indeed. ^_~

And what is that 8-bit sprite character hanging on the living room wall...is it a classic Nintendo sprite character?

Well since my last laptop got stolen, I had to replace it. Man, did I replace it:

Image

Core 2 Extreme QX9300 (2.53ghz quad), Nvidia Quadro FX 3700, 17" WUXGA screen, 2x 200gb 7200rpm drives with full disk encryption, and other nice stuff.

Also arrived just as I was leaving the house:

I got a 500 pounds discount, so it 'only' cost 2300. It was ex demo, when I asked what that really meant, they said it had been out for one day on a trade stand.

Runs pretty cool, quiet too. As I type I can hear the cooling fans but it's a whisper - nice big case with some big exhaust vents. As I said in the Pm though there are options just as good but cheaper for gaming. The bit I really do like is the screen calibrator being built in - you start the app, close the lid, wait until it beeps, and it adjusts the colour levels and gamma for you. The area on the right of the wrist rest is a Wacom drawing tablet, pen fits in the side.

Useless to me, just nifty to play with one time. Thing is, all the standard models they sell through dealers have the option, you can't get a 17" screen without one unless you order direct.

More computer stuff. This one is really stupid because I just felt like dicking around.

Here are all the parts to get going:
Image
Motherboard: Zotac GeForce 9300 ITX WiFi
CPU: Pentium Dual Core E2200 @ 2.2GHz and stock cooler
Memory: Crucial Rendition PC2-5300 2GB + 1GB
HDD: Seagate Momentus 7200.3 320GB
PSU: picoPSU-150-XT with 110W power brick
and a home-made front panel with power/HDD LEDs, and power/reset buttons.

I just mounted everything in a food storage container for non-operational protection and transport, and just leave it running out in the open. It's so ugly and stupid and awesome at the same time.

Image Image Image

And here is a close-up of the front panel, and a size comparison of the motherboard with everyone's favourite game.
Image Image

I am very impressed with the spec of this motherboard (although I cheaped out on the CPU and memory). I can run pretty much anything on medium/low settings and older stuff on high settings, and with the PCI-E x16 I have the option to drop in any graphics card I want, though the picoPSU won't juice it anymore.

I used a bus-powered DVD writer to install the OS, and I have a bus-powered Blu-ray writer on the way...

I received a SNK LS-40 optical joystick which came off a Touchdown Fever cabinet. Works with my Caliber .50 pcb that I have. Although it doesn't have the mechanical click for every turn. It feels more like a spinner really. I bet it'd be great for Arkanoid.

Yes, that handle is a football not a buttplug :)

If you plan to stick an open PC inside a spacious cabinet, I don't see any reason to pay extra for the mini-ITX form factor when you could get better on-board features (and most importantly expandability) from a cheaper ATX board. But here are roughly what I paid in CAD$

Motherboard: $175
CPU: $70
RAM:$ ??? $30?
HDD: $75
PSU w/ brick: $105

So the total looks close to CAD$500. And I don't have an ArcadeVGA or whatever that thing is for displaying on low-res RGB monitors.

This thing is quiet though. The PSU is totally silent and fanless, the chipset is passive and I have enabled CPU smartfan in the motherboard bios so all I hear are the hard drive spinning and a whisper from the CPU fan.

Recently my brothers and my Dad have been getting into nitro R/C cars, and after much deliberation (and potentially a PCB or two from my collection being sold off at some point) I finally pulled the trigger on purchasing a Traxxas Revo 3.3. Should be fun to have 4 of the things to run at once, although I'm guessing that we won't be doing much racing.

Actual pics forthcoming once I actually get the thing.

For Vexorg,

Some ready-to-run RC kits have the easy of electric Li-Po battery setup...if you get the right matched cell racing Li-Po battery packs, racing Li-Po electronic speed controller and special Li-Po battery charger setup, they can run just as fast or even faster than a gas-powered RC vehicle with super long running times of 15-20 minutes nonstop. Plus if you gear up the RC vehicle right with a Li-Po setup, it's possible to reach speeds of up to 70mph! That's insane, especially for RC kits nowdays!

The technological progression of the RC hobby nowdays wasn't like that back in the grassroots era of the early to late 1980s when all you had to deal with a crappy seven cell Ni-Cad battery pack to get maybe 25-40mph tops with a modified electric motor setup and a racing electronic speed controller with huge MOSFET-type heatsink in place. Yep, those were the days when the RC hobby was still in it's infancy. I'm amazed at how far along it has progressed to what it is today. ^_~
