What [not shmup] game are you playing now?
Re: What [not shmup] game are you playing now?
Mostly Halo 4 and Ragnarok Odyssey.
I didn't think I would enjoy Halo 4 as much as I am, especially the multiplayer. I was weary about it at first since it's not made by Bungie and that it sounded like the multiplayer was going to be way too different, but all my fears quickly went away once I started playing. The changes work surprisingly well and the game looks great too.

Virtual On [Saturn].
Playing as Temjin for once. Had to continue against Jag, and then I gave up on Z-Gradt. What weapon does the most damage in the lowest time for when I reach Z-Gradt?
I'm so used to fighting as Viper II when going against the CPU, but when fighting people, Temjin is a much better option [especially since Viper II's health is so low, he tends to die by timeout after getting hit once or twice if he can't land more than a few hits...]

Re: What [not shmup] game are you playing now?
fun story that shmup players may appreciate:
I was chilling at my friend's dorm when someone broke out Sonic Generations. (I'd played it once for 5 minutes a few months earlier and I sucked ass.) He played for 10 minutes, then passed the controller to my buddy who proceeded to do the same, then my buddy passed it to me and they all left the room. I went straight to Speed Highway 3D because that level looked fun. I was hooked instantly. I played it for 20 minutes when the first guy came back and said, "You're still playing this level?", and I said, "Dude... it's only been 20 minutes." Then my buddy came back around the 45-minute mark and said, "Jesus christ... you're still playing this level?", and I said, "Dude... it's only been like 45 minutes." Then the first guy came back around the 2-hour mark and said, "Hey it's almost time to leave for the party OH MY GOD PLAY ANOTHER LEVEL." and my buddy was all, "Corey plays shmups. This is pretty much what he does.", and I was all, "<3". I ended up getting 2:05 by the time we left then I shaved it down to 1:59 the following morning. Not the world's best time or anything but so satisfying.
Man it really opened my eyes to how fun Sonic games can be.

Playing Forza Horizon. Trying to do the game on insane difficulty. It's not going very well. I don't know if it's actually that tough or if I really don't understand how to play racing simulators. Seems like I'm fishtailing like crazy. Doing pretty well with online racing though.
Seems like everyone online is complaining about it not having tuning. I'm kind of glad the game doesn't have tuning. I would be totally lost on how to do that. Anyways, I think it's pretty interesting game. Probably will keep at it. It was pretty lame what happened earlier. I was driving through the desert and crashed my car into a small tiny dead bush.
My bitchin' Trans Am.

Re: What [not shmup] game are you playing now?
Virtual On: Oratorio Tangram [DC].
I finally get how V-Armor works, was driving me nuts for ages [and made Saturn VO my game of choice]. Reached the end as Grys-vok after a ton of continues at that midboss that looks like 2 of Z-Gradt glued to each other or so. Tangram was surprisingly easy once I reached it. Probably going to make Grys-vok my VR of choice when fighting people too. I want to use Specineff, but I die too easily.
Only time I continued was during that damn midboss, and I made it through with pure godly luck, somehow weaving right through most of its attacks.
Also, I tried to unlock Ajim [timing out with a lead instead of killing your opponent is hard, especially since you're still getting shot at]. Sadly, I got brutally murdered each time I saw it, and you can't fight it from a continue if it defeats you. Tempted to just find a CD with a bunch of saves and see if that has a VOOT save with Ajim unlocked.

Re: What [not shmup] game are you playing now?
PSP:
Lumines II: Been playing this one a lot. Feeds like an upgrade over the first game. Plays great with good headphones.
Crush: Great game, just it is a major mindfuck when I play it. I won't be able to beat all levels but I will continue to play it.
Gunpey: Didn't like the DS version, the PSP version is where it is at. It does take awhile before you get to the game over screen.
DS:
Honeycomb Beat: Ok puzzle game, just flipping hexs around that is.

I've been playing a lot of Horizon as well, I'm about halfway through the single player events and done a bit of racing online. Very fun stuff, I really like the open world in this one. The difficulty seems a bit uneven at times, in some races I'm having trouble keeping up with Medium-level opponents and on some I can win over Hard-level opponents pretty easily. Granted, the latter happens when I'm allowed to race using my favorite cars on courses I enjoy, so that might have something to do with it. Racing Mini Coopers on a tiny circuit is not terribly exciting for me...MOSQUITO FIGHTER wrote:Playing Forza Horizon. Trying to do the game on insane difficulty. It's not going very well. Multiplayer Free Roam seems pretty fun, but I haven't really had a chance to play it yet. I want to gather some people, have everyone pick a car featured in Initial D and go drifting in Red Rock.

When I get Game Over in Metroid Prime (Wii), it is time to NOT continue. We'll see next evening.

Re: What [not shmup] game are you playing now?
Just recently I found out about ScummVM, a software that lets you easily run old point-and-click adventure games. I'm considering playing through Monkey Island, everyone says it's great but never played it myself. Also considering playing Conquest of the Longbow and replaying The Dig (finished it before but I was too young to understand the story back then).

Re: What [not shmup] game are you playing now?
Speaking of point & click, the Wii controls make Prime feel like Metroid re-imagined as a point & click (action) adventure game. Unfortunately, bossfights have never been the genre's selling point and it shows. I'm not sure what makes boss a good one, but Prime lacks it (as far as I can tell). Already mentioned Other M had good bossfights. Well, even Dead Space: Extraction didn't disappoint me (higher difficulty level than default, though). Prime, on the other hand... You KNOW. It's as if they knew Metroid was supposed to have bosses, so they came up with some, but half-heartedly.
For all these counter-arcade-style bosses, the controls are surprisingly slick. Even FPP-platforming works against all odds and the ball... Well, either ball controls are easy to get right in 3D (if so, I wonder why so few games go there), or they really knew what they were doing.

Halo 4, VF 5 FS and Otogi 2, on Xbox old and new. Totally loving it. One of the best years in gaming for me since the tail end of the Dreamcast.
Can't be many more years my old frazzled brain can handle intense games like these. I'll probably end up playing slow-paced, cash burner RTS stuff on facebook

Oh wow. BDOOMv017 lets you kill zombies and imps by kicking them down the stairs.
One of the "did that just happen?" moments this mod keeps dishing out. Also works if they get blown off a high ledge. Nice, always annoying to land a meaty explosion only for the buggers to set up shop elsewhere good as new.
Also, console is fun to mess about with! The King of Monsters '93, Slugfest Never Ends:

"No!! It cannot be!! AOHHHHH!!" "Farewell Mastermind-sama... omae wa mo shindeiru." Cyberdemon's stomp attack is still god tier, baby!

SD Gundam G Generation Overworld.
Feels obviously much easier to obtain high tier units very soon (Strike Gundam on 1st level? Oh yes please) thanks to that Overbreak system.

Nice, added you. Car Clubs allow you compete between other clubs and there's a Club Garage, to which any member can put a car in, and that car is available for everybody else in the club for online events. I'm not sure what else is there, maybe there's some club-exclusive events we can now partake in.MOSQUITO FIGHTER wrote:Sent a request to join the car club. I'm Robot Inferno. Jacket's in the mail, please allow 2-4 years for delivery. The trained hamsters we use for delivery aren't very efficient.

Just about near the end of Dishonored. It's been fun, but it started to drag toward the end, unlike DX:HR which kept me interested until the death.
Tried the Forza Horizons demo. Hit another car doing 100mph. The cars went 'ping' and bounced off. Deleted it.

Currently, I'm playing Waku Waku 7 [Neo Geo/MAME]. Liking it so far, and it is pretty impressive visually. Maybe has a bit too many flickering things for its own good though, but it looks quite nice. Gonna see how my buddies like it tomorrow. Sure, it's bright and a bit cutesy, but it seems like a fun game.
Also, why is KOF [and anything made after 1998/1999] the only fighting game/series on the Neo that seems to have a proper home mode with real 2 player VS support that lets both players pick characters each match?

Got my hands on the Rockman World and Rockman X GB games. Started with World 5, but have been disappointed to find that there's a lot of slowdown... not sure if playing on a Super Gameboy is causing it, or if it just runs kind of poorly overall. I really hope this isn't typical of the GB games, because it's kind of fucking up my timing in a lot of spots and causing unnecessary deaths. Maybe I'll adjust
I'll have to find some other way to play X2, since the Super Gameboy can't and God only knows where my SP is.

Re: What [not shmup] game are you playing now?
I've played quite a bit of MMV GB, and yeah, there's quite a bit of slow down. After a while you adjust, though, especially as you learn the levels. I really stopped noticing, to be honest, and I'm someone who finds Super GnG unplayable. So maybe give it a little time before writing it off.CStarFlare wrote:Got my hands on the Rockman World and Rockman X GB games. That said, the world would greatly benefit from a PC remake of MMV, IMO, in the same vein as the Famicom remakes of MM7&8.

Die Hard Arcade [Arcade/MAME].
I forgot how much I loved this game. Pretty hard though, especially since you only get one life on defaults.
Also, when playing this game at my arcade ages ago, it was the first time I had ever seen quicktime events.

Bye-bye, flame sword! I can weave through lots of stuff but when you need to be an inch from the bad guy it gets pretty ridiculous.
This game is really tough on my eyes, because I tend to track an object coming on the screen (scrolling in any of eight directions) and then follow it a distance...then stop that and follow something else. It's like playing a shmup but for maybe a few hours straight = arrgh

Playing through Monkey Island at the moment, just finished part 1. So far I'm liking it a lot.
I have to say the sword fighting bit (more like insult fighting) was pure genius. Not only it's hilarious but it suits the text-heavy format of the game perfectly.
"I once owned a dog that was smarter than you."
"He must have taught you everything you know."
In the process of acquiring a ship I might have royally screwed up someone, but I guess having no morals is part of being a pirate.
