finished Space Battleship Yamato II TV, really like it - not quite as much as the first series but still very good. It was interesting knowing what the ending of Farewell, Yamato and seeing just when they were going to bring in the 'more positive' ending hahah

Finished both seasons to Tower of Druaga. One of the few anime adaptations that manage to be better than the source material, although in this case it's not saying all that much. Even though I had fun watching it, the 1st episode is pretty much as good as it gets and it's a real shame the rest of the series couldn't continue in this direction. Could have been a masterpiece otherwise.

First series is a little sporadic with directors changing helm part way through.
The Masaaki Osumi episodes (1-7, 9 & 12) are much more Bond like and feature a darker tone with various amounts of death and sex, closer to Monkey Punch’s vision of Lupin.
Miyazaki and Takahata (founders of Studio Ghibli) episodes (8, 10-11, 13-23) are directed in a far more cohesive fashion than Osumi’s but represent Lupin and his gang in a more family friendly manner.

I tend to enjoy Osumi’s part of the series the best but I can’t deny the Ghibli episodes are much more organised and polished.

And Mine Fujiko was probably the first animated girl to give me a hard on :D

I completely agree with everything you've said, verbatim. It's a shame Osumi didn't get to direct a big more. The first episode is pretty damn naughty towards fujiko. I can't remember the exact quote, but something metaphorical about pot holes(!). Raytrace, you may give the movies/specials a try as well. Castle of the Cagliostro is probably the most famous, but for good reason.

yeah that scene was funny and he was torturing her by miniature tickle hands - I have to say I really liked the mecha detail too - the racecars and the Alpine - great stuff - could maybe Misato driving the later version of that car in Evangelion maybe be a tribute?

The arcade Laserdisc game of Cliffhanger that arcade dev/publisher Stern distributed stateside back in 1984, had plently of memorable scenes from the Castle of the Caliostro film. It was presented in a cropped 4:3 format though. The early versions of Cliffhanger had the infamous Lupin hanging from a gallow "death scene" (that played every time you died) that was eventually removed from later arcade LD production releases. I recall my local Tilt! arcade hangout had gotten in a CH arcade LD cab & charged 50 cents per credit just to be able to play it.

Of course, the original arcade LD game of Lupin (that Cliffhanger was based on) was released in the Japanese game centers back in the early 1980s.

Well, Kino's Journey was fantastic, don't know why it took me so long to get around to it. I found it to be a lot less consistent than Mushishi in spite of its shorter episode count though, but it did manage to leave a stronger emotional impact in comparison because of that. Having a proper traveling companion would have been much preferred to a talking motorcyle though, I never did warm up to Hermes. Next up is Mononoke, right after I finish the English dub of Ghost Stories. :P

Fuck! The latest chapter of Shingeki no Kyojin has one the best cliffhanger I've seen in years, I'm too hyped right now.

Just finished watching Natsu e no Tobira, so tragic and full of passion, I loved it, highly recommended if you like the 70's shojo series.

Not that the companion is any more talkative than Hermes of Kino no Tabi, but her shape is human alright.

SAC was entertaining from beginning to end. I still don't understand why some people didn't like the episodes about the laughing man.
Kenji Kamiyama has so much talent, I'm thinking about watching Moribito or Higashi no Eden now. Watched the 1st episode of Higashi a few months ago and I loved it.

A friend of mine on another forum uploaded some very nice-quality rips of the devilman OVAs (subbed) to youtube:

Still need to watch the Devilman OVAs. The manga is one of my favorites. Some pretty dreary, evil stuff from Nagai. Wayyyyyy different than the "friendly" television show. Give the Violence Jack OVAs a try if you haven't already seen them, afterwards.

finsihed the 4 Armitage III OVAs, really really liked them well apart from the, to put it mildly, 'dodgy' relationship in it o_O

music is amazing in it

Armitage III is pretty much perfect in my opinion, and it's what got me into Japanese animation again after turning my back on it for so long. Just out of interest, what was the 'dodgy' relationship in it?

I am not one to necessarily shy away from violence in anime, but Violence Jack holds one of the few distinctions of being an exception, in that it goes way over the line of good taste. I could probably say this of most Go Nagai stuff!

Though I have always had a fondness for this scene.

Even without an eye, Jack is especially good at seeing the inner goodness of some people vis a vis others.

Things I love about Violence Jack

1) He's called Violence Jack
2) He has no discernible superpower, aside from being really fucking big
3) He seems to shift in size from shot to shot
4) He's called Violence Jack

If there's one thing that can be said about Manga UK, is that every single one of their dubs was immensely entertaining in and of itself.

I have a great fondness for Manga's often bizarrely bad dubs. It adds to the grindhouse aesthetic of a lot of this grainy, mid-late 80's trash they were putting out. Technical incompetence aside, Manga really did go the whole hog is supporting Japanese animation. Co-financing Ghost In The Shell and then getting it released in UK cinemas in 1995 was no mean feat.

I think if you claim to be able to actively differentiate between the quality of Violence Jack episodes, then you're clearly doing it wrong.
